I've wanted to go turbo for quite some time now. The original thought was to do a WRX swap however a couple of things have changed my mind.

- I'd still have a late 90's body with many aging parts. Its the little parts that break one at a time that cost money. Speed sensor $150, reverse light switch $50.....

- I wanted a 2.5 turbo. Not a lot those floating around and drive by wire costs more to swap over. I don't want to deal with 2.0 turbo lag.

- My 97 GT plows like a pig. A rear sway would help but I would still be at a dissadvantage against the WRX's on the track. I compete in Solo II and track day events so this matters to me.

- It would just be nice to have something new or nearly new. Warranty is a nice word.

So...... I knew I was buying another Subaru that wasn't a question. But what to buy..... Legacy GT - WRX - STI - Forester XT ? All I knew was it had to have a 2.5 turbo. I started by knocking out what I didn't want

STi

- pig on fuel
- limited to 17 inch wheels thus $1000 additional cost for winter tires/wheels
- they just cost a lot more

WRX

- everyone has one, enough said
- 2.5 turbo version has 4 pots thus, forced to run 17's unless I buy RS wheels

Legacy GT

- heaviest of the Subies, remember that I compete and weight counts
- limited supply of aftermarket parts, they also cost more
- more handling concerns

The winner for me: Forester XT

- Almost as much cargo room as my GT Wagon
- Insurance costs are a joke. I paid $20 more a month than my wife's base 00 Forester
- Based on Impreza platform, parts are easy to find
- Handles almost on par with WRX wagon, aftermarket suspension will cure that
- Nobody has one
- Doesn't say "Give me a speeding ticket"
- Probably less likely to be stolen than WRX

....and possibly the best: $1500 in bolt on parts gets me more power than an STi. Net result is a wagon that's faster than an STi for much less money and insurance costs. This has been proven time and time again on the Forester boards

I've been seriously looking since January for one specific model which has proven very difficult to find in mint condition: 04-05 Forester XT, 5speed, NO SUNROOF / LEATHER, in White. Turns out white is the rarest colour, around here it was not even stocked at the dealerships. You had to order a White Forester from Japan to get one.

I wanted an 04 to save some money but the mileage on them was too high. I wanted sub 35k miles. So I ponied up the extra $$$ and started looking at 05's. In the end I located only 3 White FXT's in a 20 hour radius from NY all the way to New Mexico, that's how rare these cars are. Black or Silver, found plenty within 4 hours drive.

My car turned out to be located just outside of Boston, an 8 hour drive away. It also turned out to be the most mint example available for sale in the US that was advertised on the web. It has a mere 13k miles on it and looks like new. So, sorry to say but I have moved to a Forester. Its been a slice and I've loved both my Legacy's. Driving it has been a blast, its stupid quick when you get on the turbo and makes me laugh every time.

enjoy!! keep us up to date on the mods. i'd love to hear some stories of ya smoking some teenagers.

Nice. I've been wondering about the Forester myself lately. Never really considered it before, but for some reason the last couple days I've been wondering about getting and modding one. I just wonder how much headache I'd be in for, as for starters, the ride height is WAY too high for what I want.....

That looks great! White foresters look great with the majority of aftermarket wheels out there.

I was talking to a forester owner at a meet and he said the earlier FXT's were easier to make bigger power levels because you can swap in the STi ECU. It was pre-security key foresters. Either way, I've gotten to ride in a lightly modded one FXT and it goes like nobodies business.

An STi is a little heavier than a Legacy GT...it's really not that much of a pig on weight.

As far as handling, the LGT has more potential than the STi...better chassis, better weight distribution, rear multilink...

But a great choice, nonetheless!

I will certainly keep you updated. I've got STi struts & JDM pinks already to tighten up the suspension. A local FXT member sold his so I picked up a WBR exhaust that will give it a niec rumble.

Its the 04 FXT that you can just swap out the ECU with one from the STi, I bought an 05 which has the immobilizer so thats' not an option. That said, you can still tune it which I plan to do. More to come.... !

I know you love Legacies Mark, but that is a bit of a stretch.
The weight part is correct. But along with the weight comes, extra chassis rigidity.

Give the same driver a fully decked Legacy vs. a fully decked STI, the STI is going to have a slight advantage. Plus the fact STI's can run wider rubber.

Given that, I didn't get to modify my AGX struts and my tires were a bit low, I was only a couple seconds off of a couple of STI's today at Auto-X.

Even better with the Forester, and another reason I went with it.....

1) Lighter than an STi due to transmission on STi
2) Can run wide wheels/tires on Forester (255 is possible, 235 slicks easy)
3) 4.44 gearing makes for quick acceleration on Solo II track where I'll do 90% of my events
4) Most 04 STi parts bolt directly to the FXT

Yeah, that 4.44 Tranny is a HUGE factor in acceleration. Definitely a quick car.

The other advantage is the shorter wheelbase. The longer wheelbase, that makes the Legacy nicer to ride at cruise on freeways, is a disadvantage on the track.

But I think some of the plowing you were experiencing, was because of the wagon. I also think some of the height of the Forester might be a disadvantage, but probably a wash in the end.

Forester is going to be fun for sure.

Yes, the shorter wheelbase makes a huge difference, even just driving around I can really feel the increased turn-in just going around a corner from a Stop sign with the OEM tires. I'm not 100% sure how much more the wagon plows since its only a few inches longer than a sedan but not having been in a sedan of my MY I can't say for sure.

Heigth on the Forester won't be an issue, its soon getting STi struts + JDM STi pinks which will drop it down a few inches. Lastly I held out for a Forester with NO SUNROOF, those things are freaking huge and add a lot of top heavy weight. There's no way I'll bang my helmet on this roof. Can't wait to track it !!!

Can you autox Forrester's? I thought they would be classified as an SUV.

Nice ride though.

They're only an inch taller than an Impreza. I think its total height that counts and the FXT isn't anywhere close to an SUV or minivan in height. It just looks tall. Some clubs may be fussy, all the one's around here will allow it. That would suck now wouldn't it LOL

Yeah they are not that tall I know but I hear some clubs can be kinda anal about that kind of stuff. good to hear yours isn't. keep us posted with your results driving it. Would love to hear about you smoking WRX's
