Whats everyone using for oil in their Legacies, and why? Also, what filter?

For me, I use a 50/50 Cocktail Mobil1/Mobil5000 with a PureONE filter. My car loves it.

With straight synthetic, I burn through 1/2 quart or so. With straight dino oil, I see a drop in Gas Mileage (1-2MPG)

With the cocktail, I dont burn any oil, and I get steady MPG.

I used synthetic 5W-30. Basically what is on sale, that has the SAE gold star rating on it. Usually Mobil, Castrol, or Citgo.

I use Purolator or Wix for filters.

Yeah, when the shop did my clutch, they screwed up the rear main seal the first time, and it leaked a lot of oil...they must've put synthetic, cause it ran kinda rough and sluggish, as soon as I did an oil change (back to synthetic) it was running very smoothly.

Castrol GTX in mine, Mobile1 in the wife's. Purolator filters on both. (I've always used Purolator filters on my Subarus, as they made the OEM filters when I worked in the dealership, not sure if they still do or not.)

I was using Mobil 1 back in the day with a Puralator oure 1 filter. Than switched to Royal purple and a K&N oil filter. In both my Hondas I used Castrol GTX with a pure 1 filter. All cars I do 5w-30 winter 10w-30 summer.

well for the 1 oil change i have so far performed on my suby, i used castrol GTX high milaged with a purolator pure one filter...

my teg sees mobil 1 and a pure one filter.

I'm currently running whatever the stealerships are running. The one advantage going there is that they actually provide road hazard warranty for my tires by having them change the oil. The price is not too bad.

If I could I would run Amsoil Series 2000 Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil which I run on my Acura. But since I got the Subie with lots of miles on it already, it was too late to run that thin an oil. I will swtch when I get the engine rebuilt.

Mobil 1 synthetic. A small price to pay for some extra peace of mind - sometimes I forget to do oil changes (went 8k miles and 6 months once).

Castro Syntec 10-30w with a Purolator filter.

I have been reading good things about the German Castro 0-30w on Nasioc. Might give it a try next.

A post like this should be pinned cause the search function on SLi isnt the best. We all have to change oil and its nice to see what everyone else is running (to see what might be better for our cars).

I'll update though: Since my car has sprung quite a few leaks and ticks a lot, I've been using 15W-40 Synthetic blend diesel oil.

Pennzoil platinum and Napa gold (Wix) filter.

I've found my local napa can get the OE filters from Nippon Filter for a very reasonable price, so I may switch.

Well, most the time I use Castrol GTX 10-30, but when it's low, I dont care and use what ever... The motor has 270K+ and has some small rattles so I know its' only a matter of time. It' happy just to have oil! :roll:

As for Filters, what ever is cheapest... I have talked to tons of car builders and even in race cars running RB26's or high built domestic V8's, they will use a cheap filter. They all clean the same... If I know the motor has shaving in it, I MIGHT get a K&N, but thats been about 3 times in 15 years... If they are changed with the oil, its no big deal...

Oil is another story though. 95% of the time I'll us Castrol, but my BD burns and drips it so fast I use what ever is left over from what ever car. My Toyota truck get Castrol with OEM filters (cost under $3 from Toyota), my Silvia was running Castrol Sentec. I'll be running Royal Purple or AMS in the Pulsar. My Chevy gets Castrol GTX and the same for the KA in my Volvo (when it was in my S13).

I'll ask my customers what they want, but for the most part I use Castrol. It has done me well with every car I have had and any time I do rip one of my motors apart, I dont find any build up or deposits out of the ordinary.

10w-30 due to engine knocking/rattling.
Pretty sure it's rod bearings & that this engine may see the end at anytime I turn the key...

Kendall GT1 10w30 for the summer
Kendall GT1 5w30 for the winter

I used this stuff on my turbo cars with great success. It's a synthetic blend as well that is $3.69 a quart.

This is the reason I only use 'semi-synthetic' oil. I used full synthetic oil on the first L that I had & it never stopped leaking/smoking. My ex had always put non-syn in & here I come switching it up on her. Car never stopped smoking (rear main seal was done for).

just bought Pennzoil 10W-30 high mileage vehicle oil. Also bought the Wal-Mart brand oil filter. If I had a better vehicle I would switch to synthetic.

Mobile 1 synthetic for everything including differentials and gear oil. My father in law works for Exxon as an operator at the refinery, he gets the stuff for damn near free. White label / white box / not for resale. I do lose a bit of oil, never burnt just blown out of the car from the usual places. But I'm never in danger since I change the motor oil between 3 and 4k. I could go longer but since I actually lose some oil, I don't like to go longer.

I use a K&N oil filter since Autozone here carries it in stock without ordering it.

My wife's truck gets Pennzoil, I don't like to mess with her truck, she just takes it to the oil change and wash place down the street.

I am coming up on my first oil change. Should I go for synthetic,blend, or regular oil?

Also should I go with a High Mileage oil?

Im thinking 5w30 Amsoil, Castrol non Syn,Castrol Syn Blend, or Mobil 1.

Iv'e never heard of purelator filter, are those sold at kragens or Autozone?

Depends on the motor... If it's a Turbo, at minimum you should be running a blend. Other wise you'll cook the turbo and plug all the lines. Subaru will not waranty a turbo/motor if its had conventional run through it. Have seen it happen on a GT and a few WRX's and well as a ton of VW Turbos. None Turbo, no biggy... I run conventional for all my N/A motors...

Try Rotella T6, you'll get the same results but half the price of RP. I've had good luck with that and GC according to my past few UOA's.

I work hard to do this every 3000 - 3500 miles.

1995 Legacy - 238K miles Castrol 20W-50 - seemed to alleviate the leaking oil situation a bit.

1999 Legacy - 180K miles Castrol 10W-30 - this is my wife's and I had better get my ass changing it as she's gone 6000 miles now and if her engine blows up then she'll get my (soon to be) new car! Yikes! Now there's a vivid thought.

Fram filter - orange box.

Oil is so damn expensive nowadays. I wait for the sales and then get about 24 -36 quarts at a time.

Somebody mentioned a K&N so I thought I'd yap a bit.

I have an old Porsche that sees the track every so often (except now living in California, we are looking at $1000 per day so "often" actually means rarely...).

Anyway...

I put a K&N air filter on the Carrera and it seemed to buy me a little horsepower. Not bad for $50.

That said, my mechanic talked me into removing it. He said, with Porsche 911s at least, they are finding foam and other debris from the K&N in the engine! What that means is, they are fine if you keep track of their condition. If you are like me and you just slip it in, well my wife has to - my arms are too fat, and forget about it then you are looking at trouble down the road (literally).

SO... K&N air filter users, keep tabs on the filter condition to protect your engine.

I use synthetic castrol or mobil it helps keep the engine clean. oil comes out quite clean after 5k miles

Castrol Gtx. Its a good non synthetic oil that is good enough for me. After an engine rebuild I will run synthetic. I want to start with new gaskets and seals before running synthetic.

For those of you using Royal Purple 5w30 I highly suggest you switching over to a 5w40 or even a 10w40. The 5w30 shears too rapidly and its rated a 20 weight after 3000 miles.

I'm a big Royal Purple fan and have been using it since 2004. Currently I'm using Royal Purple 5w40 and it has a high TBN. I use Zero Sports Oil filters or Tommy Kaira Oil filters. The JDM brand oil filters have a better filtering media and has an internal magnet to collect excess iron particles.

I buy my Zero Sports oil filter from EDOPerformance. Tommy Kaira oil filters are available through RHDJapan.com. These oil filters are pretty damn expensive. They are about $20 each for the Z/S ones. About $50 for the Tommy Kaira oil filters.

^^ wow, bling much? I bet if a Zerosports or TK filter were cut open, they wouldn't be much different to an OEM filter. I am doubtful about the magnet claim also. You could achieve the same effect by attaching a magnet to the oil filter, much less expense for an item that is thrown away after 5000miles or every track event.

I hear great things about it and it seems to hold up against heat and shearing. And it's priced reasonably.

Running Castrol edge 10w-60 right now with an original subaru oil filter, so far it's great, no problems. Uses less fuel and runs smoother.
Tobad it costs a small fortune...

But my friend is experiencing some valve tick in his Mitsu GSX, only when the engine is cold tho.

I run regular dino bones. In both hot, and super cold temps. Never have any problems, and I seem to have little to no carbon build up.

Oil: Regular Non-Synthetic 10w30. Castrol GTX, Quake State High mileage, Pennzoil.. or whatever is on sale.

Filter: NAPA GOLD (wix), Purolator PURONE, or sometimes OEM depending on costs.

Change about every 5k or more w/no issues.

I'd like to see that evidence...

I've seen the insides of OEM filters and they look like WIX and Pentius, with the finer mesh, FRAM and other cheapos are a much bigger mesh and corrugation filter.

:smt024 ATTN!!! regular oil filters do NOT have the ability to filter high pressure hot oil IE: when your driving it hard. when the pressure reaches high levels above 23psi, their is a bypass valve that will CLOSE OFF your oil filter meaning when your kicking the shyt out of your car your doing so with NO oil filtration!! :shock: please for the sake of future Subaru drivers get a good oil filter, I personally use Mobil one high performance filters that do not have a pressure cap and stay open when driving hard.

I'm going to hack my last Suby filter (from northern AZ dealership, purchased in Oct-ish) open and see. I wonder if it's a dealer's option, like they get to choose what their business will use, as per a range of Suby-factory regulations on acceptable filters they support, or something like that. I don't remember ever getting a Suby filter that's entirely wrapped in plastic (like i your video), just a little cap-cover of plastic on the open end. At any rate, that's good info and worth looking into. Thanks :smt023

The make oil to 20w70 for mult-vis. Mostly for motorcycles like harleys.

Filters i use new wix subaru filter. Since there the only ones i know of that use the correct bypass psi. Oil i use relabeled valvoline. Same stuff but cheaper. 3-4k intervals

According to Nasioc, the Purolator PL14460 and L14460 filters also have the correct bypass pressure. Wix is a good one though.

I use the L14460 95% of the time. Its always part a "deal" at my local Pepboys with 5 qts of some sort of oil for $15-$20. I am about to put Mobil Super 5000 in the Outback. Has anyone tried it yet?

Saw a Pennzoil, Fram, and standard Napa filters cut, and the Pennzoil and Fram were crap! The Napa filter is at least a little better than those, just a little heads up.

^It'd be good for track days... when the only time you're not mashing the accelerator to the floor is during hard braking into a corner.

Changed my oil and checked my tire pressure this morning. Not surprisingly, the oil is doing what oil does...and the filter is, as you may have guessed, filtering. Exciting.
