I found this auction on ebay and the price is substantially lower than any SPT axle back that Ive seen advertised. Here is the link, if you have any experience with this please edumacate me.

Why does the exhaust sound so 'tin can' like at low rpms? All the Exhaust clip videos ive seen of this exhaust on subarus.. in the low rpm range, you can hear a 'ticking' sound.. and a 'rattle' type noise.. not very appealing. In the higher rpm range it sounds okay.. but still, i think my stock exhaust sounds better because it does not have the 'buzzing' sound.
Anyone else have any clips to prove me wrong?

You are hearing the heat shields. It's NOT the muffler.

Nice.. i was going to do the same thing as well. Mine gets in tommorow too.. so hopefully the install wont be too long. Do you need any gaskets or anything, or it straight bolt up? What size bolts hold the old axle-back on?

You should get a new gasket and new stainless steel bolts & nuts. Just measure up the boltholes on the SPT one, and go out to the hardware store.
Remember this is a direct replacement part. It'll fit fine if you still have a stock midpipe + stock hangers.

Mine came with gaskets, no bolts though. I have a bin of bolts so there was no problem. I would do anti seize on the bolts. I started doing that when I got my SPT muffler. It made it so easy replace or adjusting over time.

I had a BD chassis axle back on my BE ( Corazon from Japan, up for sale soon ) that I just paid to have welded to the stock exhaust instead of bolted up. It still is close enough any exhaust shop can fix it up for you in 10 mins.
I am currently using a crappy Dynomax Turbo as the Corazon straight through design was too loud once I went to 2.5" one high flow cat with the header. Is this SPT design a straight or "angled" through type, for is their a turn inside that forces the exhaust to flow through at least some sound deadening fiberglass/baffles.

Well i dont really want to lay in 10 inches of snow to change my exhaust really.. i will just give it a few weeks for it to melt.. no big rush because i need to buy the gasket anyways and stuff. It wouldnt be so bad if i was able to snow blow the driveway.. but yea, it was wayyyyyy too heavy and the snow blower had none of that. I might do it this weekend.. we'll see. My friend just bought a 98 silver LGT; he signed up under Tominator, but is still waiting for approval. He bought the spt axleback and wanted to share some pics.
By the way I have two pictures of this exhaust on the wagon, and they look really tucked in. I am wondering if that person have the sedan version on.
Tominator:
Here are some pics of the exhaust on my 98 LGT. The exhaust is awsome and absolutely a steal at $105, my shipping cost $12 so the total was $117.00. Mike from Bosal is a great guy to deal with, if anyone is in the need of a new exhaust/muffler then they should get this.
I just got the Legacy a week ago and the first thing to go was the gay straight-pipe from the previous owner. Here is the Bosal next to the gay straightpipe. This muffler is so much quieter than what used to be on.

The welds are great, the finish is fantastic and with the exception of the tip sticking out 2 inches past the lip under the bumper, it fit perfectly. As one guy earlier stated it hangs down a little low so I just used the rubber hanger things to tuck it up a little bit. It turned up really nice and looks better tucked up.

well.. its on! Sounds great too.. just like stock for the most part.. very quiet.. but has a bit more of a rumble / low sound to it! really nice!
Seems to hang a bit lower, as well as sticking out further.. but overall.. very nice!
I agree about the sound, a little rumble at idle and a bit more while driving. Its just slightly audible from inside the car.
The exhaust hangs down waay too low for my taste. I modified a few exhaust hangers I had laying around and its sits perfectly in the bumper cutout and is much closer to the body. For $114 shipped Im not complaining. Glad I found this deal.
BTW Mike told me he has the SPT part for the wagon as well. It was on ebay when I originally saw and posted this question.

Just wondering..because i emailed Mike about this, and he told me to get him this measurement.. seems like its going to be a pain in the ass to do in this weather.. so we will see. My tip still sticks out like yours but doesnt look as far out since its tucked into the exhaust cutout on the bumper.
I modified 2 OEM Honda exhaust hangers(I work at the Honda dealer so spare parts arent hard to come by). I found an older VW hanger that worked perfectly as well. All 3 hangers were shorter than the OEM Subaru so its not hanging nearly as low as before. The hanger mods took about 5 mins and is self explanatory. Ill get some pics this weekend if anyone wants any.

The Honda hangers have smaller eyelet holes so you have to enlarge them slightly. I used a unibit to enlarge them and some lube to help them slip over the hanger bracket. The VW hanger is literally the shape of an "O" and fits perfectly over the 2 hangers closest to the rear subframe/rear diff. Ill snap some pics in a few.

The VW "O" shaped hanger helped pull the exhaust up slightly but made very llittle difference. Ive taken several hard turns with no rubbing on anything despite the hangers being so close. One other nice thing, the hangers are very stiff so the exhaust movement is reduced. You can get those Honda hangers on pretty much any old civic/Accord. hth

Nice, thanks for the pic man! So basically any honda hangers will do? Did you use 3 honda hangers to replace the ones on the exhaust.. or 2 honda hangers and teh WV hanger? If i just used all honda hangers.. it should reduce the 'sag' correct? Hmm, might need to look into it. I wonder how much 3 of them would run me.

when you say hanger are you refering to the rubber round things or the actual metal hangers that are welded to the exhaust? Mine is tucked up alot, maybe even more than oncesir and I just put the metal shaft in the middle hole of the rubber things. Then I used some zipties to make sure nothing popped out of place. The exhaust is really sturdy and does not rock much left and right, up and down.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/
You might want to try this before you go buy hangers for a honda or you could always heat up the metal hangers and rebend them to make them fit.

Anyone looking to buy exhausts from bosal.. make SURE you get them to give you the right one. Im actually in contact with someone right now who also recieved a bosal SPT exhaust as well from bosal, and they seem to have sent him one that is about 1.5" too short. I spoke with mike over at bosal this morning and he said that the shipping dept has been packaging the exhausts wrong. I've been talking with the guy with the 'too short' wagon exhaust.. and we figure we have both been sent the incorrect ones. The best way to tell is apparently the tip size. Wagons are 8.75" and Sedans are about 7.5" .
Edit:
Here are the measurements i have compiled from both a sedan and wagon so far:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wagon:
Front connection flange to tip of muffler (full length) : approx. 49.5"
From back of muffler canister to tip of muffler canister: approx. 26"
Muffler tip length: 8.5 - 8.75"

This is a picture of someones wagon exhaust who apparently has the incorrect length:

I'm really glad bosal has awesome customer service! Mike over at bosal has been great in communicating about the problem and helping me figure things out. Looks like i might be getting a new exhaust soon!
Definitely one of the best companies i have ever dealt with!

I dont have the money to cut the tip / re weld and such.. id rather just get a stock spec one.. plus, I'm only getting a new one because ive been talking with bosal about it since the day i got my exhaust.

The pic of the wagon was of the muffler that was too short, and my pics were of a muffler that was too long. You have a wagon right? I think they were only selling them for the sedan.. but they havent taken back their wagon muffler yet from me.. so if you are interested.. i will sell you my extra wagon muffler. (lets hope they dont come knocking for it)
Also.. getting some pics of my proper sedan muffler soon! I have it one.. just been lazy!

If you just slap it on an already stock system? Probably not anything significant, maybe 1 or 2 HP

Here's an update:
I purchased a BD5 SPT muffler from Mike last week on Wednesday and I got it today!
Great guy and great service from Bosal!
The cost of the muffler was $115 and $25 shipping to Canada. The package is huge! Also, it was amzing how Mike made sure I was not taxed by customs, so only $140US to my front door via UPS!

In case anyone is interested in this muffler still, I just ordered one from Mike at Bosal. I payed $130 for the muffler (I payed with paypal so it was $15 extra), and shipping to Ottawa, Canada was $52.50. A bit more expensive for me, but still much cheaper than buying it anywhere else! He is shipping it tomorrow, and I should have it by next week.

I just purchased one tonight from Mike for my sedan for $125+shipping.
Anyone know if this should come with a gasket? And if they come with a warranty? I forgot to ask when I made the purchase and had to leave him these questions on his VM as it was after 5pm when I called back to ask.
EDIT: Got a response - NO gasket - 1 year warranty
And if anyone was looking for his contact info it is:

This is a bump from the grave, but I contacted Mike today, because of this thread, and he has mufflers available. I'll be ordering one for my BK4 tomorrow, once I find out how much shipping is.

Still debating if I should get one. He wouldn't discount it any more for me even though I get wholesale. $140 + shipping seems kinda steep for old product that they seem to want to get rid of.

Steep? You wont't find a brand new pre made muffler for your car anywhere else. I thought it was a pretty good price myself. I paid $155 shipped when I got mine.

put mine on yesterday and im kind of dissapointed. i was expecting it to be a little bit louder. cant even hear it while driving. probably cuz my intake is so loud

So, how much louder than stock is this muffler? Enough to notice? My stock exhaust is in great shape, and I was wondering if this one would be any different. I have borla replicas already installed if that matters.

I have borlas too and you can definately hear a little rumble but it just wasnt loud enough for me i guess. heres a link to mine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4_8Y_ZMPDQ
It's not a loud muffler, but it is certainly noisier than stock, especially after a few minutes driving. I expect it to be even louder if/when I get an HFC installed as well.

I'm just poor. Rather spend the ~$150 on a header. My GT wagon muffler actually isn't that quiet with just the Borla midpipe on it.... and I have that high-flow cat just SITTING there, not on my car yet. Ugh. Need header.
