alright, i have a 97 ej22 in my car that sounds a little like death, i also have a 93 ej22 sitting around from a friend. right now it sounds like most of my unwanted noises are coming from my shortblock. i know there is differances in the heads (solid valve lash adjusters? cams?). what i really want to know is if there is ANY differance between the 97 and 93 short blocks (i would swap the new heads since its my understanding they are the reason for better power). iv been thinking about swaping the shortblocks, i just want to know if there is any differance between them at all, like sensor locations, piston differances or anything. let me know if u know anything. thanks!

Displacement is exactly the same. The 97-98 engine is interference, but that's because of the valve design to go along with the engine being a higher CR.

Contact matt monson (his real name and his screen name) over on nasioc. He's an NA motor guru and could tell you for definate.

the early EJ22e's had hollow lifters, the newer ones used solid lifters, supposedly for durability.

i think the big difference is the single vs. dual port exhaust? iirc you have to match the heads to the exh manis. CR is different too.
i think?

Yes, they're all single port from there on out. Some 96s were single port as well though...
But if you kept the heads from a different EJ22 it would matter.
