Well I fell into another car yet again. It's a 96 Dodge Neon AT SOHC. It should be perfect to drive to and from work. I need something good on gas and cheap on insurance. Gives more room for some toys. Me and John "97LegacyGT" or something like that have the engine apart. I'll take pics tomorrow or soon.

New Head gasket
New valve cover gasket
New cam seal
New crank seal
New water pump and seal
New timing belt
New thermostat
New PCV valve
New air filter pure one
Fresh oil change Castrol syntec and pure one filter
Optima Redtop battery
Grounding kit
MSD Coil pack
NGK copper plugs
OBX Throttlebody spacer
K&N air filter
New Sony headunit CDXGT210
New Sony 6x9 4 way XSR6941

Degreased the engine for a 3rd time in 2 weeks. It's finally clean enough to satisfy me.

No pics yet, it's nothing special. It's green, has steelies on it and a rust spot on the hood. Oh I put my redtop in there too yesterday haha. Hopefully this guy won't back out of the trade and the Accord will be gone.

3 pics in the first post. I painted the plate holder. Next I will paint the rims and wiper arms and do some grounding.

The topic pic is after I used the Plastix. I didn't like how they came out so I didn't take pics. I'll sand them down a bit, I have 1000 and 2000 grit sand paper. I used most of the day cleaning out the Accord and gathering all the extra parts. I can't wait to see it go and get my new toy

Too bad it's an auto.

You could probably sell that neon coil pack to somebody on here if you go msd.

Reason

Yea, I'll do that  I want an auto for a work car. I don't want to be in traffic for an hour everyday coming home from work with a manual.

Hey, I thought you didn't like Dodge!

Not bad for a DD. Sounds like it should last a good while with some good reliability with all the new parts in the motor. I need to get a DD.

since im plagued with a engine similar to this, i would say "put on the DOHC noen R/T head" but thats not worth the trouble just to get more little more power out of it when all you want is a trouble free daily driver.

the exhaust system im using for my 420a is a bosal system, It doesn't sound ricey on the inside...yeah...on the outside though, it does a bit.

Reason

If swapping the head was direct and now wiring or new plumbing I would consider it just for shits and giggles.

Jedi Taxi
06-07-2007, 08:33 PM
well, here is what you would need:

the DOHC head
new header for the DOHC
new intake manifold for the DOHC
DOHC ECU
DOHC throttle body
DOHC timing belt (just buy this new)
and the sensors.
and the wiring harness
replace the gaskets when you do this, just to make sure it'll run great when your done.

SO really the only way this would be worth it is if you were bored enough to go the yard, find a 2.0L DOHC neon, grab parts when there on sell (if your local yard does have a weekend special or the sort) and (if you can live yourself with this) see if you can sneak the sensors, ECU, throttle body, and wiring harness out.

I may look into this. The lifters are getting noisy soooo ya know.

It'll be a fun weekend project to get some easy power while also setting the stones for any future mods.

Depends on the rev range how it sounds, usualy not bad until you get to the top...which is where all your power is....

Flowmaster makes a cat back for this, so I would end up with that if any.

It has a fairly new exhaust on it. I will only replace what needs replacing. This is a work car (and only driveable car at the time) The exhaust may never be touched again, but I always leave my options open. I'm more worried about MPG, and take any power that comes with it.

I'd leave the motor alone, the SOHC generally tends to get the same mileage as the DOHC.

Power gains are only really going to be in the 45-55mph range in 1st gear and 80-95mph in 2nd gear.

It's an auto

heck, if he wants to leave it SOHC, he could put in the 95 cam for an easy 4hp gain. yeah, i understand the (dont change it till its broken) i apply that to the eclipse. which things break fairly often....damn dsm

Yeah, you think you're getting to 80mph in 2nd gear on the 5MT?

He was talking about your 3 speed.

So what were you talking about.

The DOHC makes about the same torque as the SOHC, it just does it to a higher rpm range. Above 5000 it makes more torque. The 3 speed auto puts you above 5000 at the range of vehicle speeds that I mentioned.

AKA, the 3 speed is worthless on the DOHC motor...

That's why I'm going to buy a cam shaft from a 95, new valve train and I should be good.

Grounding kit installed, I did this shit in the rain...fun, fun, fun. I have one more wire to do, I'm going to wait because it's at a tuff spot to reach.

I noticed the headlights look brighter, but won't tell till the night fall. I took it for a spin and I noticed nothing. I didn't get a chance to check if my radio sound better since their are claims this helps.
