What is the best way to install a front strut bar? Lift the car up, or do it with it on the ground?

On the ground. You want the struts to be as they would be if the car was rolling straight, and the suspension is pre-loaded.
Flat level ground, 6 nuts and you're done in 10mins.

how does the argument stand currently for the effectiveness of front strut tower braces on subies? especially coupled w/a rear sway...

Front Strut Bar under normal circumstances = bling
Rear Sway Bar under normal circumstances = less body roll, performance
At the limit a Front Strut Bar will help - but only at the limit.

I have both, and I completely agree - the strut tower bar looks nice, but only has very small effect on the driving experience. The rear swaybar however makes a huge difference.

I lifted mine up when I did it. No difference.
