So I just got back from getting my 02 legacy dynoed and tuned and I now know where i stand HP and Torque wise. I gained 14 HP from stock and 183.12ft LBS of torque from 166 stock with all the mods that i have done. Not as much in the HP category as i had hopped. Oh well it is what it is. I was hopping that my check engine light and the AT oil temp light would be able to be fixed but he wasn't able to fix it or understand why it was going off. It could be that I haven't solder the SAFC II to the ECU yet but that wasn't done because I was planning on having it tuned and they might mess with the wires.

torque is all that matters anyway, and an AT oil temp light can be pretty serious if its legit. better be safe, right? might as well get the codes read.

Wait...you had 166 stock at the wheels? What dyno gave you these results?

I got the stock numbers from http://www.cars101.com/subaru/legacy/legacy2002.html Am I wrong?
I have had the codes read and it comes back as P1700 TPS Circuit Malfunction For AT. the only good thing about the code is is that we were messing with the TPS wire. So at least it was a wire that we were messing with and not some random wire we never touched.

That's 100hp more than my 2.2

If you get numbers at a dyno, they will not be the same as the numbers that the car is rated with. The car is rated by its manufacturer for HP at the crank, not the wheels.
A stock EJ25 on the AWD platform is usually around 120hp at the wheels...maybe a little less.
So it looks like you gained a lot more power, if this dyno was accurate.
Put it this way: the numbers you listed were WRX territory.

Dyno numbers from different dynos cannot compaired. You can bring your car to one machine and read 130 hp, and another and read 95. They are all very different. The best way to get an accurate read on how much hp you gained is to make a baseline run with the car stock, and always return to the same machine.
What was your hp/torkies when you started the day? How much did you gain through tuning?

To be honest I am not sure what I had at the begining of the dyno. The place I went to didnt really talk to me through the process and I didnt know what to ask. The sheet of paper that he gave me has my HP at 127.9 and torque at 130.8 he said that is what it is to the wheels. He said to find out I guess the overall HP and torque to multiply both numbers by 1.4. That is where I got my numbers. Can someone show me how to post pics?

What kind of dyno was it, did they take your wheels off and connect machines to the hubs, or was the car anchored to 2 big sets of rollers in the ground?
based on a 165hp (crank) engine, less a 25% AWD power loss, you'd end up with around 123hp at the wheels.
So given that you are now making 128hp at the wheels, your mods have netted you around 5hp, at the wheels.
This is all assuming that the engine is running in factory like condition, and that my 25% figure is in fact correct.
(It's all a guesstimation)

When was the last time you changed your plugs and wires? You have a bit of a miss at 4200 rpm

Those numbers sound right. What do you have for mods? My 97 GT put down 117hp and 119tq? around there. I had intake, Perrin pulley, Stormung mid pipe and SPT axle back. I have a thread floating around her something with the sheets.

I bought the car with 47,000 on it and I have 63,000 and I havent changed the plugs yet. Do you think it is due? Mods wise I have borla header, Agency power light weight crank pulley, random tech dual high flow cat, and stromung cat back.

Take the airbox and the windshield washer reservoir out to get at the plugs.

Never had to do it, but if it's recommended so you can easily remove the plugs, then I'd say it'd have to be straightforward. Looking at mine, all the bolts holding it on are obvious.

Now a plug question. what are good plugs to buy?
Wiscon_Mark
04-27-2007, 09:39 AM
NGK all the way. Avoid Champion and Bosch on Subarus.
Oh, and a correction on the airbox -you have a BE, so you wouldn't have to do that.

Which ones NGK do I need? Iridium IX BKR6EIX-11, OE Laser Iridium IFR6E11 there are a few others? the laser ones seem to be the most expensive
backpack09
04-27-2007, 10:15 AM
I always go with the cheapest NGKs I can find, and swap them often. They are so cheap I do them about every 3rd oil change. Advanced/PartsAmerica/Checker sells them. Autozone does not.

04-27-2007, 10:16 AM
So would you say that the more expensive ones are not worth the cost?
backpack09
04-27-2007, 10:23 AM
In my opinion, on a NA car, the more expensive plugs are just a gimmick to try and charge 5$ a plug for a car that does not need it.

Yeah, length of rubber hose that fits snugly over the sparkplug also works.
The upside is you can start the sparkplug thread by hand by using the hose method :D.

this thread cracks me up.
i run cheap non-plat plugs and change them every 3rd oil change. The cheap plugs tend to give a better spark but don't last as long.
