View Full Version : EJ22T into a BD: What all is needed?

grayguy

What all is needed to get an ej22t into a BD and running. I know I need, the motor, turbo cross memeber, custom exhaust, custom IC piping (FMIC) and associated gauges. The things I am not sure about are: Do I need a different fuel pump? And what would be needed as far as the ECU goes? Is it possible to get the Stock Turbo ECU to run the engine in a BD?

The first stage of this would be done as cheap as possible, hence why I asked about the stock turbo ECU, cause I don't have the money to go fullblown stand alone ATM, and it's not really nessecary on a mostly stock ej22t. Basically, for atleast a while, I would want to be running nothing crazy, just slightly more boost from the stock turbo (or possibly wrx/sti take off?) nice 3inch exhaust, and a FMIC setup. Any and all information is welcome.

Yes. I know actually getting it in the car wont be an issue. I'm more concerned with the wiring aspect.

Wiring, I don't know alot about, but yes, you should upgrade the fuel pump ,and if you;re planning on running more boost, maybe upgraded injectors too.

Ok, I just got done talking to my ej22t genious friend about some things, and I have a lot better Idea of what i think I want to do now.

I'm thinking use the EJ22T short block, and the ej25 heads and intake manifold. I'll build a custom Up-pipe to go to a TD04l turbo. I want to run a FMIC, so that's obviously all custom piping. And all custom 3inch exhaust. I am still not certain on injectors. Some say my 2.5 injectors are the same as the STI pinks, others say I need something else, does anyone know for sure?

As for management, my friend suggested using MAF Translator with a good AF meter and MAP sensor. That puts me at about $760ish for managment. this management seems very user friendly and has lots of features. He also suggested I use a GM boost control Solenoid ($60 dealer part from the typhoo/cyclone blazers of the early 90's) to electronically control boost. The nice thing about the MAF Translator is I could apparenly tell it that I want a certain AFR and PSI at any given RPM, and the computer would figure out how it needs to adjust the fuel curve to get the desired affect.

I would hope to begin withrunning around 10psi on this setup, and once I knew everything was going correctly, I would eventually turn it up to the 15-16psi range.

Thoughts on this setup/idea? Has anyone here run the MAF translator management?

04-28-2007, 05:56 PM
Not sure about your management stuff, I've never messed with any of those. However, I do know that the N/a ej25 injectors are NOT the same as the STi pinks.

What are the head bolts supposed to be torqued to?! All these engines laying in a garage is making me antsy to start my project!

grayguy
05-07-2007, 12:44 AM
I'm not sure what the heads are supposed to be torqued too, but we seriously needed that much to get them off (keeping in mind that pipe flexed a fair amount)

I'm going ej22t short block (stock internals for now) with the ej25 heads and intake mani. I already picked up a WRX tmic, and I just bought a 16G (TD05) turbo too. Hopefully this project will start rolling faster after I finish up finals this week.

The Sti Pink run in excess of 500 cc's wile...I think 2.5's run around high 3's to low 4's. I know the 2.5 fuel rails are larger than an ej22's.

Someone correct me if i'm wong on the 2.5 injectors.

Looks like a great project!

grayguy

For the time being I'm not taking the short block apart. In 1-2 years when i can afford a tranny, it'll get pulled back out and get rods/pistons, and lots of balancing. For now it's keeping the stock bottom end. I will defiently be spending some time cleaning eerythign out the best I can before re-assembly though.

Well update time: I got my heads back from the machine shop, I just got my oil/water pump yesterday. I still need to drill/tap my heads and then the motor can go back together. I went with the ACT clutch. Tonight I got my FMIC all figured out, and it's pretty much ready to go. I am also working on the dash and HVAC relocation, but I'm not quite done yet. grayguy
06-13-2007, 07:50 PM
The gauges are pretty much pressure fit in ATM. I still need to work that out.

I'm not sure what you mean by "FOD?" But there wont be anything infront of the intercooler if that's what you mean?

The IC piping. It comes off the FMIC, drops down under the fog lights, bend back up and through the hole in the engine compartment that the stock one goes in. Then on the other side, it does the same except I need to drill a 3'' hole where the battery used to be.

^ he just has to tap em for oil or coolant (for the turbo), i forget, one needs to be taped, but one needs to be taped the other you can just remove a bolt for.

besides that and getting the proper HG its a bolt on affair i belive.

Update: Sorry about the lack of pictures, My little sister stole my camera...I'll get them up asap.

The car is Wired! My subie wiring god of a freind wired the standalone last week, everything is basically ready to go, I just need to hook up the GM boost control Solenoid when i get it. I also need to wire up the autometers.

Ok, so here's an important lesson for you. WRX STUFF IS NOT A SIMPLE BOLT ON! I ended up buying full aftermarket exhaust for a 97-01 WRX. The uppipe barely hits the bottom of the passenger side head. The bigger issue is the fact that the stock WRX turbo's outlet goes straight into the TB. So, I'm in the process of clocking the outlet 180degrees. Oce that's done, I am going to have to cut up the uppipe and get it all to fit in there well. I hope to do that tonight or tommorow night.

Sorry for the novel and no pics, I'll try to get some up later this week.

Engine back in
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2007/09/EngineBackin-1.jpg

Battery relocation: I used 2 kicker distribution blocks, one for the engine bay end, and one for all the grounds in the trunk. I think this made for a nice clean looking installation. Oh, and don't worry, I'm not using that battery, I'm gonna pick up a closed/sealed battery. Either an optima or a stinger.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2007/09/Battery1-1.jpg
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2007/09/Battery2-1.jpg

Here is where I mounted the zetronics LCD. I was not to happy to discover that I have to buy the EGT and boost sensors for it seperately...So until I have $200ish to drop on those 2 sensors, this thing is virtually worthless...

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2007/09/Zetronics-1.jpg

And here's my friend T-leg in my garage. We were putting 3" TBE exhaust on it. I was hoping that having a running T-leg next to it would motivate my car to get it's self running...it didn't work :-(

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2007/09/Tlegs3-1.jpg

But, now that the hardest part (as far as I'm concerned) is done!!! Thanks to my wiring genius friend, my links and zetronics are wired!

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2007/09/Wiring-1.jpg

And finally, this is my uppipe I was ready to finish up when my welder crapped out, and I got angry and drove my truck over a tercel.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2007/09/Uppipemockup-1.jpg

And the "Anger Managment"

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2007/09/yotavsyota-1.jpg

I need to get the Outlet housing back on the turbo.
I need to wire my Intake Air Temp Sensor.
I need to route the PCV Valve to the intake(I'll install another catch can here in the future
I need to route the Vaccum from the valve covers to the catch can/intake
I need to Wire the Boost Control Solenoid.
I need to find (or probably build a coolant expansion tank)
I need to Wire my gauges, and hook up the boost guage.
I need to do the intial setup of the ECU
I need to put Oil, coolant, and power steering fluid in.
I need some luck.

Oh man, I know how you feel. Rod Knock is quite possibly one of the worst sounds you can hear....so depressing. I remember when my RSTi did it back with the old Version 4 RA block.

Price wise, if you dont mind me asking, roughly how much did you spend so far with the short block + engine managment, all the other supporting mods etc... Would the price be compairable to swapping to USDM WRX? Reason I ask is I want to know if its worth the effort to build a hybrid when it is easier to just go straight usdm WRX everything (I know the block is not even in the same leauge as the 22t in terms of strength).

Now that I've done it, if I could start over, I'd buy a totalled WRX and do that swap, possibly using my 22t short block. it would have been a lot easier and less time for sure. I honestly can't tell you want I have into this, I stopped paying attention cause it was depressing. I'd guess $5-8k.

For the time and money, I'd do the WRX swap, and then mod that.

No updates. My garage doesn't have heat, so I've barely started to pull it apart.

Well I don't have anything to compare it to, but yes, I like the link. It's all relatively straight forward, and they also have a forum if you can't figure things out.

I spent the extra $90 to upgrade to a 5bar MAP sensor, so I Payed just under $1100 total. Yes, I would recommend it. You live in the cities, so you'd also have the benefit of being close to Piddy, and he knows tons about them. he's the reason I got one...

So..updates....yeah...

Ok, basically this car pissed me off so much that I didn't even touch it again until August. I pulled the 22t, and put the 2.5 NA short block back in with intentions of running 8-9 psi and just driving it till it blew up or I could afford to build the 22t.

well, because the subaru gods hate me, I did all the work and spent the $$$ to put the stock shortblock in and I put it all back together and started it...and I have bad taping/knocking noises coming from my passenger side intake cam. AWESOME! And what's even better is one day when I was out trying to diagnose the issue, the car completely died. As in, it started and ran great (besides head noise) dependably, and then I shut it off and it never started again...just cranks cant cranks and never fires. At this point I say fuck this car, get busy with other projects, and haven't touched it cause I'm trying to get my 93' T-leg on the road for winter.

But, then I happened upon an awesome deal from a friend. I picked up his 22t with STi Rods and Wiescos, fully machined and ready to assemble, Plus I got his 93' T-leg rolling shell too. So, once the t-leg is up and running, the BD goes under the knife AGAIN, this time getting the built 22t, and I'll go back through the heads and make sure they are all fine....
