Well, if you've got other rims on there.. you're not stock.
Stock Legacy Tire size should be something like 195/65-14 H rated. I could be wrong, though.

Yeah not running stock currently. and i dont think my current combo is equivalent to stock. i think my lazy ass just needs to do a little searching....
:edit: found that GGT quotes 205/55/16 as equivalent to stock, so i think 215/45/17 is about as close as i can get.... damn i have lots of edits this morning....

Well what GGT is talking about is stock size for the GT 16x6.5" wheels. The L's in 96 had either 15's or 14's, which were much thinner. You can't go wrong with 215/45/R17 on a 17x7" wheel. You can put wider and larger wheels/tires on, only circumferences that have to remain the same are those on all 4 tires (meaning equal wear) to prevent strain on the AWD system. IIRC you do not have to maintain stock tire circumference regardless of size (175/65/R15 vs. 215/45/R17 ...you could go 215/40/R17 if you wanted, either way..).

Now i just have to decide whether i want another set of yoko avs es 100's, toyo proxes 4's, or pirelli pzer nero's (havent tried the pirellis)....
:edit: Hey tris, you know a good place around here that can powdercoat these badboys for me?

The tyre size dictates the speedo reading, so different rolling radius make the speedo either over or under read. Bigger wheels make it over read as one full turn of the wheel travels a greater distance than it would have done before.
Another problem with fitting bigger tyres would be with them catching on the spring suspension cup or bodywork, although on the Legacy's, the bodywork isn't much of a problem.
Try to keep the overall rollnig radius the same and you can't go wrong!
Here's another website for ya: http://www.toyo.co.uk/index.php?fuseact ... e10d&pId=1 (http://www.toyo.co.uk/index.php?fuseaction=tyreconverter.table10d&pId=1)
The closest in size is the 225/45/17.

225's IIRC have been said to rub on stock legacy suspension parts, get yourself some stiffer struts and springs and you should be all set. Switching to a WRX setup (struts etc) gives you a little more clearance as the front lower spring seat sits a little higher than on the OEM Legacy strut. IF you really want to put some wide rubber on there you'd have to get coilovers for the narrowest option with the most clearance.
As far as tyres, go with the Pirelli Pzero Nero's, my brother has them on his RS, and they are quite amazing. I'm going to be swapping wheels with him so I can fully test them out since my car has a better suspension and setup (being 5MT vs his 4EAT) for really hanging around the corners. I've only heard great things about them, and he says they stick like glue rain or shine...no snow miles yet, but give it a couple months.

The offset of the wheel also affects the size of tire you can run. In general, 225's are too wide to fit into the BD/BG wheel wells. I've run 215/45/17 with 17x7.5 +53 without any rubbing, but same tires with my 17x7 +45 offset wheels, i had to roll my front fenders.

this won't help. The points and travel is the same.

Points are the same when rubbing on the inside, however outside it changes slightly as the travel can be slightly decreased hence stiffer suspension. Either way Cajual has another good point.

only way to decrease travel is by putting in taller bumpstops.
