I got an ebay intake the other day and while trying to figure out how it was going to work I noticed my throttle body was a little dirty. I took it off to clean it out and realized the entire inside of the intake manifold (at least what I can see) is coated in an oily dirty residue. Is this normal or do I have even more car projects after school gets out?

Looks like between suspension, repainting a fender and a possible exhaust system my car will be down for a week or two. Good thing I got my motorcycle engine rebuilt this week.

That is normal.

Pick up a can of seafoam. Run half of it through your pcv line, and dump the rest in your gas tank.

I think there is (or there should be) a DIY for this.

Did sea foam a while ago but through the brake booster line. I'll have to do it again when I get a chance.

Good to know it's supposed to look like that though. Kinda made me nervous for a bit. I'm kinda one of those people who gets a little paranoid about weird noises and stuff like that.

Some sea foam deep creep cleaner or throttle body cleaner can clean up the throttle body.

Sometimes your crankcase vent will barf oil into your intake. It's probably residue from that.

At least you didn't get gasoline vapors everywhere when you took your TB off... If the residue is really bad and you really want to clean it, I think you could pull the entire manifold, and soak it in some Dish soap (fill a big container with dish soap and water). The dish soap will break down the oil and sludge. Seafoam might not be able to get all of the crap out...

An oil catch can will stop that.

Why? What benefits would you plan on seeing? Your charcoal canister simply scrubs your fuel tank vent lines.

I thought the charcoal canister was a non-service part of the car anyway.

Looks like I'll have to put in a catch can. Does the compressor water trap filter deal work pretty well?

Yep, I had it on my Accord and it caught a lot of crap. My friend has one on his Maxima and so far it's doing the job. We replaced the intake manifold with a new one we gutted. I think we will be taking it off to replace the other valve gasket. We will see how the intake is keeping clean or not. I want to out a catch can in my Neon too, I just been too busy lately.
