View Full Version : Hmmm... cheap white rims? OR should I color match?

Hey guys,
I checked for a few pages and noticed that no one had really posted this question.
I am (a) looking for white 17 inch rims to put on my lgt. (b) I'm trying to do it as inexpensively as possible.
What are some of the least expensive rims you've seen in white (including rims that you paint white yourself that are 17s)?
I'm interested in upping the size slightly.

p.s. has anyone tried coating stock '98 gt rims with chrome?

Chrome is dead, at least in the US. It's possible, but dont.
I have a set of STi wheels I'm having painted white. They're 17s, but aren't cheap.
A friend just put these on his miata

I don't know what they are, but he's a broke mofo, so they can't be too pricey  If you like them I'll find out what they are.

Hmmmm... interesting... however, they would definitely need to fit the offset and standard measurements on a legacy. What's the price on a set if they do?

I'm painting my rims white as soon as I am out of school. I'm going to rattle can my RS wheels myself. Here's some 16's:

And not be 4 lug, like that Mazda is.
Take your current wheels, pull 'em off, go to the store, buy a few cans of duplicolor white, some sanding supplies, and some clear coat. Sand your wheels, get some texture on them, and just paint 'em.

Hmmm, anyone have any white lgt rims? (Or regular rims photoshopped?) I'd be curious to see how they look.
Repainting stock rims would be the absolutely cheapest option (aside from me being content with my stockers, which reaaaaally aren't that bad to begin with at all).

White mesh wheels don't look good IMO. There was a white wrx wagon at one of the colorado meets with white powder coated mesh wheels and they looked like poo.

One definition of gay is happy. Does that mean white rims make the car smile?
Hahaha! I'm sorry, couldn't help myself.

Here's a pic of a Subaru Legacy from DiscountTireDirect.com, to be used for further rim discussion:

Can anyone photoshop some nice-looking white rims onto this? (Rotas or Volks preferrably, or anything six-spoke that fits the 2.5gt)
*Writer's note: the pic only looks like a pic of a '96 L or LS model

White six spokes won't fit. Dang it! Stop! I'm going to be the first green legacy on here with white wheels. Haha. I have all the paint, just need to take the tires off my RS wheels and go to town.

why take the tires off? you can slide index cards in between tire and wheel, good to go when you rattle-can.

Because they are winter tires and one of them has a puncture that can't be repaired. My WRX wheels have some falken ziex 512's, and those will be swapped over. I hope to sell two of the winter tires so I don't want white paint all over them haha.

Advans FTW? (I may be a bit biased though)
A local place (JDM-P) was selling a set in 15" for $800CDN, but YMMV though. I would think they're pretty hard to find in white.

The only color I would pair up white rims to is on a white car TBH. It's too much on anything darker, and on a silver/gold/metallic color it just doesn't look right to me.

White rims look good on white cars - not so much other colors. Plus a problem on white rims can be yellowing from brake dust and disc rust - that is why I went with gold rims

I dunno about white wheels on anyhing besides white, green, red, blue, silver, grey or black. I know I don't like yellow :p
It's a little much on multi-colored cars, but I really like it on red, dark blue, and green. PWT, that's gonna look awesome :D
I wish I had better shots of mine with the white sneakers on. My camera was on the fritz and I sold both sets before getting good pics.

The ES-Tarmacs are really sexy wheels. I mocked up a set that was sitting in my garage while I was stealing my mom's car for a weekend.

I put the white RS wheels on and damn. The right choice for a dark green car for sure. It looks like a time attack car. I love it!! My mom just took my camera for her trip to germany though... so I can't update with pics until she gets back or I find someone else with a camera.

sybir: the tarmacs look great... makes me think about the wheel mods I can do to my wife's outback now.
pwt: congrats on your wheel paint job... I wonder if anyone took the really sporty rs wheels (not the ones you have) and painted them white.

I already have a chip in the paint  It's on the lip of one of them. Something wierd happened between the paint and primer. In some places the paint absolutely etched into the primer and is bonded nicely, but on one of my center caps I put some 11 day painters tape on (very mild) and it pulled the white paint and clear coat right off the primer. Where I got the chip it acted the same way and flaked off real easy. Luckily it's only a small chip.
Oh, and forewarning. Put a spray bottle and a good towel in your trunk. You'll need it every day or two. I've already cleaned the wheels twice. Once a day basically. Depends on how many stop lights you hit haha.

Here's a preview pic, since I haven't been able to get pics of my car just yet. I entered a car show this past saturday. There was a pic of my car, but it was too head on to really show the wheels:

PWT, you basically sealed the deal for me.
First off, the wheels look even whiter than I thought they'd look (what color paint did you use? It's fantastic). Second, your wheels really set off the kind of play between dark body color and bright white rims that I like - nice dichotomy of brightness going on there.
Third, getting white spray paint + clear coat is going to be cheaper than getting body color-matched 433 Spruce Pearl green paint from Subaru (which is what I would have wanted: a spot on body color match). However, I have to admit that I am still split. Legacy owners with silver cars have it easy.
Hope you don't mind, I hijacked your pic and gave it a green color matched - sort of - look:

Do you see my dilemma now?

Here you go. I used stove paint, and don't recommend it. It's resistant to chemicals and spills which meant it was really hard to get the clear coat to stick, so in spots it didn't stick the brake dust is starting to stain it and eat through the paint.
