Plain and simple my engine is shot...99 BD 2.5L DOHC 5MT

After finals are over the engine is coming out and going to see what is exactly wrong and if it’s possible to fix and in the price range

If it isn’t there are 2 options

A) Go to Junkyard and pull a motor just like mine...60$
Concerns: will the engine work, how reliable is that engine, missing
parts, blown head gasket, etc.

B) I have a 92 BC 2.2L SOHC 5MT, put that engine in the 99 BD...Free
Concerns: Will every thing work, wiring mostly???
Questions: what can I take off the 2.5L and put on the 2.2L to make it
any better, heads etc.

Not doing turbo because I am a poor college student, unless I can find one a wrecked wrx dirt cheap

Also do not want to sell the 99 BD because I just don’t and if I'm going to spend $5000 on a new used car I mid as well do a wrx engine swap

Ideas and opinions welcome

Thxs

You're a poor college student... sell the BC and use the money to put a working used engine into the BD.

What condition is your older legacy in? If you're not really going to fetch much money for it, then here's what I'd do:

Take your 2.5 liter block and find a junkyard 2.2 motor. Pull the heads from the 2.2 liter and transplant onto your 2.5 block. This is the famed frankenstein high compression motor and with supporting mods puts out stock WRX power levels. You can run it fine on your stock ECU, though you will need to run premium to prevent knocking/ predetonation.

You're using a junkyard 2.2 because you can then keep using your older legacy as a daily driver until every thing is done. Once it's all set you can sell that car to recoupe costs of the motor transplant.

You could also go stock to stock and grab a 2.5 liter out of the yard. No matter which route you go, you should be opening up both motors and inspecting and rebuilding what needs rebuilding.

What are the symptoms of your 2.5, this will help diagnose what is wrong in particular with the motor which will tell us if the shortblock is still usable.

high compression:
2.5 block, 2.2 heads

Ready to for a turbo/ low compression:
2.2 block, 2.5 heads

Displacement is borexstroke, so different heads won't change either of those values, just compression.

If you were crazy, you could also throw in a different crank, not sure about the success rates with that kind of mod though. Might get 2.5 literes of displacement out of an EJ22 shortblock + EJ25 heads.

i am going to the junk yard tommrow to pull a 2.5L engine

is there any way of looking at the vin number on the car to tell what type of engine it is instead of jsut going by looks

right now more owrried about getting the car up and running to the 2.2L heads on the 2.5L will happen further down the road

Thxs for all the replys

The engine code is stamped on the block: EJ25

Could also look at the VIN:

I wouldn't trust the VIN though as it could have been swapped. It will help you search quicker though and verify it has EJ25 stamped on it like Huffer said.

if i am going to put 2.2L heads on my 2.5L DOHC block does it matter what 2.2L heads go on....

Such as DOHC 2.2 or SOHC 2.2...does it matter

If it does matter what which engines are DOHC and which are SOHC

DOHC = Double Overhead Cam
SOHC = Single Overhead Cam

That means a DOHC engine has two cams per head.

Which means if you put DOHC heads on any engine, it becomes a DOHC engine.

The EJ22's are usually SOHC, and the majority of the 97-99 EJ25 engines are DOHC. The 2000+ EJ25s are SOHC, except for the WRX/STi ones which are DOHC.

That's a rough set of notes, and by no means complete.

the only heads i will be able to get from the junk yard will be 2.2L SOHC

will there be any downsides, going from DOHC to SOHC

and with putting on the 2.2L heads onthe 2.5L block what gains could i expect if any

there isnt dohc 2.2s they are sohcs, but not all of them are the same. the older 90-96? have dual exhaust ports, and the 97+ have a single port. if u want yo use your same header that came with the 2.5, u will have to get a set of dual port heads since the single port would require a single port header.

DOHC and SOHC have advantages and disadvantages over eachother. I'd suggest just getting whatever's cheaper.

Earlier SOHC heads were non interference which is nice if your timing belt ever goes.

Will the spark plugs and wires be a problem

On the 2.5L the wires go into the heads

On the 2.2L the wires go in right above the heads

will this be an issue

Is there any thing else i need to worry about or will this just bolt right up with no problems or modifications

i plan on getting a 2.2L SOHC dual port exhaust heads from the junk yard[/img]

That phase 1 DOHC motors were a PAIN IN THE ASS to change. I know because I just did my plugs today!

The SOHC heads all have the plugs at an angle, so you can actually get to them. SOHC EJ22 heads should be pretty easy to work with. The spark plugs and wires are a pain, but they can be done (easier on the EJ22 heads than the EJ25D).

Finally got the engine out of tha car

replaced head gskets all parts, and drove for about a year and now get what's sounds like a bad bearing.

any idea if it's worth pulling the block apart or maybe just putting in a 2.2L
