legacy or legacy-outback?

Ok, I feel stupid again, as I did when I asked the difference between the BH/BG-BD/ and so forth, but.....

What makes a legacy a legacy-outback?

Is my 99' legacy GT ah legacy-outback or just ah legacy?

Your leggy is just that. A leggy. The outback sedan didnt come around till 01 or 02 or so. I also think that the outbacks have somewhat lifted suspension too IIRC. SOmebody have the right answer here?

The outback platform didn't come out till 2000 so all legacys before that were just legacys. The legacy outbacks and legacys 2000 and after have different bumpers to tell them apart. In 2002 and after, the legacy outback has an H-6 option while the legacy never came with it. Outbacks have 1 inch more ground clearance than legacys and weigh around 100 pounds heavier.

ok well the reason I ask is because I'm trying to replace my rack and pinion and it's asking if it's ah legacy or legacy-outback first timme I've seen this?!?! :roll:

and on another site you select legacy al the way through the choices and it gives you results for "outback chassis"

This is not even close to true. The SUS was a nationwide option in 99 and available previous to that in New England as well as a few other areas.

As for the lift deal, the 96 outback was the first one to get a lift, the 00 just got another inch or so with the lift.

The outback is still "just a Legacy" as far as chassis goes. It just has differences like suspension, options, trimline, fender flares (on the new gen) and some other stuff.

I would guess that the steering system is all the same as the Legacy, they just ask whether it's a Leg or a LegOutback on those parts lists for almost anything, including cupholders ;)

Besides the body cladding/armour, they Outbacks seem to usually come in a two tone color as well.

The 99 and older Outbacks also actually have useful foglights as far as I can tell.

Nah, all the lighting on my '97 sucks. It does have nice big holes in the bumper to be able to mount a good set of aftermarket fogs, though. :)

after visual comparison between my 02 H6 and silent's 03 L there wasn't much difference most of them are already mentioned except for stock intake in H6 goes through and out the fender while regular 4 cyl has it all under the hood. the fenders are wider. trims are different obviously.

Everyone is correct, the difference is in years and wording.

In 97 the SUS appears as 4 Dr Outback AWD Sedan.
In 98 it wasn't produced.
In 99 it re-appears as Subaru Legacy 4 Dr Limited 30th Ann AWD Sedan.

I forgot about the SUS. Kinda scary considering the only Subie Shop in town (well, it doesn't exist anymore) was owned by a guy who drove a 1998 (I think, not sure on the exact year) SUS. >_<

The mechanics of the outback and Legacy should be exactly the same, other than a few minor things in the suspension.

yeah! 1999 SUS, kind of an orphan (sp?) but i got mine earlier this year and had to have some work done at a shop in placerville, the owner of the shop said he's been working on subies for 15 years right, so when i bring mine in he said he had never heard of it and made a point of looking over the car.

Yeah, the SUS is a bit of a red headed stepchild... But it's neat. A lifted Sedan...

not lifted enough, I had a 95 leg and high centered twice last year, so when i found the SUS i jumped at a chanch to buy it, got stuck twice pulling into my drive way.
