View Full Version : I did something stupid...

So as I get ready to rip apart my 91 SS I figured I do it with the car clean. I go to the car wash and proceeded to rinse it down. I wanted to degrease the engine because it was filthy. So I went at it like I've been doing it for years. Countless cars I can't even remember. The most I ever covered was an open air filter. The car died when I was rinsing the engine off. The car is so quiet I couldn't hear it. I go to start it back up it would just crank, nothing more. So after a few F-bombs I decided to wait to see if the engine dries if I have better luck, nothing. I have a few guys help me push it out in the sun and let it dry. Same thing a few cranks nothing more. After about 10 mins I have at it again, the engine rumbles a bit but sounds strange, well really quiet but the engine is turning over. It only stays running holding the throttle down. I had to limp it home, it wouldn't go over 3500 rpms. It's up to 4500 rpms 2 days later. It still has problems running. I hope I didn't fuck up the one thing I wanted on this car. Any ideas what I did? I spayed down all the wires with wire "dryer" and there's no more water. Could the plugs be fouled? there's a few pops here and there. The turbo spools up but dies at 4500rpms.

I would pull all of your electrical connections and spray some electrical cleaner in them. I had a friend do the same thing with his Z, it started fine but would stutter and die with acceleration. He got water into the TPS sensor so that the PCM would get a wrong signal on acceleration. Good luck!

might as well try cleaning up the plug wires and coil pack connections first, put some dielectric grease on them. its a good place to start.

Why would you spray down an engine while its running :-?

If it runs up to a certain RPM i would guess you have water in the intake. I've had a similar problem with the floods this year. The engine is drawing in air and then when you get to a certain rpm, it's not only drawing in air but the moisture in the intake. Make sure it is dry. That would also suggest why you are getting more RPMS each day as it dries.

Worth checking..

I would pull all of your electrical connections and spray some electrical cleaner in them!

That was one of the first things I did. I'm going to screw around with it a bit more. I checked the wires and they are dry. I didn't check the intake yet.

The intake was bone dry. I took off the coil pack, it looks trashed. It was also a bit moist, sounds like the sparks were jumping. Anyone have an extra coil pack close to me that I can try it out? I don't want to buy anything for it at this point. I just want to make sure the engine runs before I pull it.

I have a short video so people can get an idea what I'm talking about. It's running alone now. It needs some gas here and there, but it's getting better slowly. I think what happened was I got so water into the turbo.

So I wanted to try and clean all connections better. I started with the TB position sensor.... oh shit my electric cleaner is empty. I go and do something else, forgetting to hook up the sensor. At the same time I had the intake disconnected from the TB. It need help to stay running. I hooked up the intake to the TB and its running fine. I hook up the TB position sensor and the car dies. So looks like I just killed the sensor. This makes me happy it's nothing bad.

I think one or both mounts are shot too. If I shift aggressively (not ooberdoob aggressive) you can hear a knock.

I have the sensor hooked up and it's fine now. Just some boost leaks now that were there when I picked up the car.
