1998 Legacy GT questions, please help!

Hi there,

As some of you may know, I got in an accident (not my fault) a little while ago. I'm going to be repairing my car shortly, I just have a few questions...

- does anyone know anywhere online i can find a '98 GT hood (with the non-functional hood scoop)

- bumper cover? i've found one store on ebay with the bumper and the hood without the scoop. Are there any aftermarket bumpers made for the '98 Legacy that i can order, anybody have any links to any? thnx!

once repaired, i want to start a few modifications...

- exhaust (custom by noyzboyz, for about $800)
- intake/air filter - what should i buy, is it worth it?

basically i want to know what mods are worth buying, that aren't too expensive, and any i could install myself (i have no mechanical experience and aren't too inclined either, but i could figure simple things out, im a quick learner, just dont have any lifts or tools or anything)

- can i paint my rims without taking them off? if i take off my wheels, can i put them back on myself without a torque wrench?

- what other mods do you guys recommend that aren't very expensive?

keep in mind i will probably keep this car for 3 more years at least, and don't want to spend all my money on it, but want to improve it a bit (i'm not going for an STi engine swap or anything, lol)

if anybody has anything else to say or any other recommendations it would be GREATLY appreciated!

Take the snorkus out, try that, then decide about an actual CAI.

Exhaust can be a good investment but don't go too big. 2.5" max, I'd say.

Suspension and brake upgrades are the best mods for the older GT's IMO.

That's about it unless you want to dump pretty big money for small gains. Boxer4racing has an ECU you can get. You can get cams from Delta or a few other places, but for any real power increases you'd need to go F/I (turbo, supercharger).

Forget the visual stuff. Keep the car running top notch with good fluids, regular oil changes, good tires and good alignment.

Put yourself through advanced driving school. Best mod in the world, and you can use it on any road legal vehicle.

What is a CAI?

What about K&N intake? They claim some decent horsepower gains...

How much does the ECU and Cams cost, and what do they offer?

Driving school is something I'll do in the future when I can afford it, but I'd say I'm a fairly intermediate driver.

Personally, if you aren't planning on keeping the car for a while (I don't consider 3 years a long time) then I would just fix it back to stock and be happy. You aren't going to be able to get much more, if any for a modded car unless you have substantial mods. Also realize the more personal you make the car, the more you narrow down the amount of potential buyers.

Modding a car you plan on selling is like throwing money away. If you have that much money, just get a new car :wink:

An intake and exhaust on a NA car will net you a few HP (only in the top end), nothing spectacular or really that noticeable. Its more for sound, etc.

I completley agree. I would say however I am fairly skilled. No Hans Stuck or Walter Rohl over here, but I do have my fair share of experience, and am familiar with advanced driving techniques (and know how to use them). I could however DEFINITELY benefit from driving school, it's just not something I can afford at the time. Haha and no I'm not a highschool streetracing bragger, I"m just saying, I know how to left foot brake, brake sway the car, scandivian flick, etc....

What driving school have you attended? I really want to go to a Rally school one day, or Porsche driver training.
