I picked him up from the body shop yesterday. They did one better for me and put in a new window on the new door to fix the scratches. I'll take better pics with the digicam later but it looks good!

So Charlotte was leaving in the Subaru this morning. She doesn't even make it out of the parking lot and somebody backs into her. She's just fine, nobody was hurt. Dude didn't have insurance or anything, and was offering to pay me back in payments. Fortunately I have uninsured motorist coverage on my policy (hannover) so it looks like it'll get fixed ok.

That was done by an S-10 travelling 25-30 mph. Note how well the side impact door beams worked though - my wife (in the passenger seat) didn't feel a thing (other than being showered in glass).

Somehow he managed to just hit the door and nothing else - unfortunately the door post was bent. My door hasn't been the same since (trim panel keeps popping off at the bottom, and the window has too much lateral play in it), so I hope you have better luck.

Ok, Insurance sent a work order to the body shop, stopped by and they estimated $1560. Since the other guy was uninsured, I don't have to pay! I should have the car back late next week.

1560 seems a little high, i had my whole side resprayed for 1700. I did know the owner though. Good luck, she'll be lookin' good as new in no time!

Ok, we dropped him off at the body shop and picked up our rental.

It's a white '06 PT cruiser. I didn't have my camera today to post pics or anything so here's a stock photo:

Charlotte likes it a lot, so at least she won't be afraid to drive it because it's a rental. The motor doesn't seem like it has 20 more hp than the 2,2 legacy. You floor it and it just kinda makes noise, just like the legacy in fact. The trans sucks for only having 11k, shifts are a bit firm although it does do a good job of keeping the RPMs down. At part throttle pulling off from a light, it rapid fire shifts like an F1 car.

Fit and finish is nicer than anything i'm used to, i'm sure it sucks compared to a lexus or something. I'm too tall for the seats so i have to kinda slouch to see under the roofline. They really need to be height adjustable like in the subaru, maybe they are in the nicer models.

The brakes are *really* good. I haven't driven too many new cars, but the response is very good and the pedal is properly firm and not mushy.

The stereo is "meh", again i'm sure there's a nicer one in the higher models.

So we drove the PT around for a bit. I like it a bit better now, mostly because it's not pushing 13 years old and mostly worn out. The motor has a bit better power than i initially said, although it still doesn't go anywhere in a hurry, it doesn't have to work as hard to go up hills and such.


I dare ya to bring it to the autox this weekend.

I'm hoping to have legacy back before then.

Yeah - our Civic's brakes have a lot of initial bite...you can give yourself whiplash pretty easily. But if I had to do a 60-0 test, I'd have my money on the Legacy, it stops pretty good when you really stomp the pedal.

speaking Subaru brakes I know where you are coming from. Both my Legacy's have felt like they have a very weak pedal. However, when I have had to stomp on them becuase of someone elses bad driving they have stopped me very quickly. The brakes on the WRX are insane...

just a brake system flush and EBC greenstuff pads, and my car can stop pretty damn quick on the stock LSi calipers all round. I can't actually imagine what the STi Brembos feel like.
