Since my pilot bearing and clutch are the original 106,XXX mile originals and my pilot bearing is going out, I'd like to upgrade to a stage one clutch kit and ACT streetlite flywheel for my 98. I've found the flywheel but cannot seem to find a stage one clutch kit. I'm not going to be racing this thing, just romping it every so often and I'd like the upgrade instead of replacing with OEM. Is there a stage one kit for the Legacys? Part #'s would be nice if available.

Is there any reason you are needing an upgraded clutch?

Unless you are making gobs more power, or launching from every redlight. An Exedy/stocker is really the best replacement.

I have seen the Stage 1 ACT clutches on Dabay for ~300$

Good call Mark. Now another question. What is the difference between the 1996 - 1998 and 1999 - 2004 clutches? E-Gay has listings for PLENTY of clutches that the seller says fits 1997 - 2005 Subaru 2.5 Legacy AND 1998 - 2006 Imp. BUT, the Exedy part # as shown on Exedy's web site says 1999 - 2004. EVERY clutch I've looked at with the Exedy # and referenced to their site, says different that what the seller says. Granted I have not been able to call anyone as I sleep all day and work all night, but can anyone shed some light on this. I don't have a ton of $ to spend, but I want a decent OEM clutch for the best price I can.

I believe that all hydrolic clutches are interchangeable, as legos are. The 1997 Legacy using the 2.5 liter motor has a hydrolic, and every 2.5 liter has. I don't know if the cable clutch would be compatible with hydrolic setups... I'm not so sure about the 2.2's clutch setups. Didn't pay much attention...

I don't believe any of the Cable Clutches are interchangable with hydraulic clutches, so there's an overlap from 96-99, where Legacys have cable and hydraulic clutches (if you have an EJ22, you have cable, vice versa).

The best thing to do is call Dale and talk to him. Phone number is on the website, they're good guys over there.
