I have a 98L with what I was told is a AC condesser leak. How much of a PIA is it to replace this part? Pepboys wanted $479, the entire car isn't worth much more than that so if I can I'd like to do the work myself.
Any help is much appreciated.

I'm going to take my A/C compressor and piping out. I'd charge $0 ;-) if you picked it up. (Albany, NY) Look at a Hayne's Repair manual, the procedure isn't that hard, you just have to be very very careful around the pressurized coolant.

To do it properly requires special equipment to purge the system. Not really a DIY job.

If you are going to bother doing it you should replace any of the seals you will be disturbing. Then bring it to an AC shop and have them purge/fill your system. Since it is on 134a it should be reletively inexpensive.

Venting any AC gas to atmosphere is a huge environmental no-no. People do it, but it can be dangerous. Plus, if someone sees you, and reports you, expect a huge fine.

If he has a leak... then he most likely has already vented all of his refrigerant into the atmosphere :)

And that is the "reason" we switched to R134a, it is supposedly less bad for the ozone. (if you believe everything that dupont tells you)
