looks like i have to make another on since the other one got deleted..
Thanks (and i mean huge thanks) to Jason(dropdfocus) for helping with the install of my new KYB GR-2 struts and the Whiteline Flatout springs.. I havent heard any reviews on them yet so i'll be sure to let everyone know how the are once i put some miles on them.

Now for the pics:

Tight!
The Flatouts are low... they'll settle even lower. On thing you might want to do is paint brake calipers and spray the wheel wells black... that helps visually lower the car also.

I have the same set up on my 99LGT and for the 2 weeks i was able to drive my car they handled like a dream and what a difference

Now the car is jacked up outside with the engine in the garage.

wow, those springs have double the coils of stock! They look like they were meant to be with the GR2's. Sharp car, don't forget to give us a review.

looks good lowered, but damn you need more tire... or something.

indeed

got new tires, just havent put them on since i need an alignment and inspection and all that good jazz.. Figured id just wait til i got this done instead of driving on new tires and no alignment.. As for painting the calipers and wheel wells, i'll hopefully be doing that by the end of the week along with maybe painting the sideskirts..

the lowering on the flatout springs according to PDM-racing is 40-50mm lower then stock which i think is just about what the eibach prokit is (correct me if im wrong).. it does handle like a dream and so far so good. Hopefully i'll have a review by next week with the new tires.

Yeah, it was a pain in the a$$ during 91* heat last Friday here in PA. We trudged through it with a ton of water & Gatorade (thanks for the run the Sunoco for refreshments!)...

The front was cake, other than installing front springs on the rear struts and not realizing it until finding out that the strut was too long to go in up front.... DOH! The back was a beotch!!! The top hats did not want to line up at all, so they were removed and realigned, then reinstalled.

It was a good thing that new parts were purchased, the rear struts had no rebound at all & were starting to rot where the strut cylinder comes out. It was time for new goodies!

All & all, it wasn't too bad but the heat made it drag out. Astin might not believe it, but he was a big help in the end. Definitely not a one man job, that's for damn sure. I do have to say that I love my air tools!!!!!! Without them, this would have taken all weekend. Now we just need to get him upgraded sway bars to tighten up the rest of the suspension. Astin did threaten to paint the springs STi pink. I told him I'd smack him stupid if he did. *sigh* Kids these days...

-- Glad I could help ya out Astin, it was great to have ya over. Can't wait to tear into redoing the stereo install and making a custom fiberglassed sub enclosure. --

the lowering on the flatout springs according to PDM-racing is 40-50mm lower then stock which i think is just about what the eibach prokit is (correct me if im wrong)..

40mm = 1.6in
50mm = 2.0in

The Eibach Pro Kit is listed at 1.2" or 30mm lower than stock.

BTW, for anyone who cares:

Tools used for this install were
- 1/2" impact gun
- 3/8" air wratchet
- 22mm, 19mm, 15mm, 12mm sockets & wrenches
- 1/2" torque stick (as to not over tighten the lug nuts)
- hammer
- pry bar
- spring compressors
(never purchase cheap ones, unless you like visiting the hospital)
- pnuematic cut-off wheel/grinder
- floor jack & stands

-- FRONT --
5 - 19mm lug nuts (holding the wheel on, duh...)
3 - 12mm nuts on the top hat
1 - 19mm nut (holding the top hat the the strut cylinder)
2- 19mm nuts & bolts at the bottom of the struts

-- REAR --
5 - 19mm lug nuts (holding the wheel on, yet again...)
3 - 12mm nuts on the top hat
1 - 19mm nut (holding the top hat the the strut cylinder)
1 - 22mm nut & bolt (camber bolt)
1 - 19mm nut & bolt (below the camber bolt)
5 - 15mm bolts (holding in upper & lower sections of the back seat)

- Using a cut-off wheel makes easy work of cutting open the bracket (after you remove the retaining "U" clip which will be reinstalled on the new struts) so you don't need to pull the brake lines apart to remove them from the hole which holds the lines up out of the way of the suspension.

Oh, and GearWrenches are one of the best things a human has ever created! Astin was a believer by the end of the night....

Huffer
06-19-2007, 10:21 PM
How long did it take? Some friends and I did my sedan with STOCK springs (needed way more spring compression) in 2.5hours with airtools. No alignment needed because the rear can't be adjusted and the front camber bolt we etched to make sure it lined up again.

dropdfocus
06-19-2007, 11:14 PM
Much longer than 2.5 hrs, but it was also like 95* with 90% humidity too... Kinda killer day to pick for swapping out a suspension, but it was all worth it to see the look on Astin's face when he came back from his initial run.

Reposition the car, rather than yourself if you need to.

i know, in the first 2 shots where the power plant is, there isnt a spot on the sunny side to park.. as for the one with the stop sign, we just parked the cars there and didnt worry about the sun even though i knew the side of my car would be dark... thanks for the advice though, always learning

wow looks like its time for a big update... Well shortly after i posted those last pictures, the car died. (actually the night before my wedding. ) After sitting all winter i found a new motor here on the boards (thanks Aussiedan) and decided to throw it in until i could build a frakenmotor and do the 5 spd swap.. Thanks to Dropdfocus, the new motor is in and she is running great. Still have a few things to work on, but other then that she is running great.. I'll be able to update it some more when i have some time later. Once again, thanks to jason for all the hard work helping get this car back on the road.. Til then, here's a new pic..

damn.. guess i should really update this alittle more...lol.. well the car is still running great with the new motor. However it currently is off the road for a bit since it needs new tires, 2 front axles and inspected. Also, within the last week or so i've pretty much decided to go ahead with my build.
I've come into possesion of a 91 legacy L wagon with a 2.2 motor. Actually it was my mom's who gave it to my brother who now has a 04 foresterxt. lol So here's how the build will go..

Using the:

2.2 Bottom end
EJ22T internals and crank that i have
EJ25 Heads from my old motor if they're good
wrx turbo
wrx intercooler
pp6 for engine mang. since im running low boost at first..it will be swapped out for something better when i get the funds..

also, i have a legacy 5spd tranny that will prob. be swapped in once the associating pieces are gatherd.
So yea.. there's the plan.. Hopefully everything will go as planned and i can have it done before winter. That all depends if i get a better job or not. lol

and for shits a giggles, a couple more pics..lol

well i still have them, but im debating on what i want to do yet.. I actually still have all the parts (wrx tubro & Intercooler, 22t internals, spare ej25, 5spd tranny)... so i've thought about building that motor... but i actually batted around the idea of an H6 swap.. gee, wonder where i got that idea from.. haha

man i'm horrible at updating this... although not much has changed. I painted the side skirts and i'm happy with them. Had an exhaust leak which got patched, but now seems to be leaking again somewhere.. The Rota's aren't looking the greatest so i'll be swapping the LGT wheels back on and either re-painting the SDR's or powder coating them... Not sure on color, may go with something different this time.

As for the exhaust, i'm might patch it again just to get by for inspection since i've contemplated getting rid of it, however i'm leaning at just replacing the exhaust which will give me more reasons to keep it...lol Hopefully i can wash it this week with the nice weather..

Figured it's been awhile. Had to throw some coolant in it the other day. Pretty sure the headgaskets are going again. Not sure what i want to do with it yet, needs a bunch of other stuff as well. May look for something newer, or just spend a little money and fix the most urgent stuff and keep it going for a little longer. Drove it around for a bit today, then some snow came down to make it a white christmas after all!

So i got tired of the how yellow/cloudy my jdm lights looked so i tried out the 3m kit. As usual with this kit i think they turned out pretty good. I didn't get a chance to clear them, but i'm going to try and install some HID's this summer so i'll redo it and clear them then.. The rust is starting to eat this thing alive so i'm not sure how much more will get done to this thing. As long as it gets me where i need to go, then that's all that matters..

here's how bad the lights looked:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/04/20140412_174702_zps7yfbjgqc-1.jpg
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/04/20140412_174655_zpszeb6mewa-1.jpg

and here's how they looked afterwards, although this pic doesn't really do them justice.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/04/20140412_193450_zps61ldc90g-1.jpg
