I'll post pics of the printouts later, too tired to do it now, long day and i'll have more to post in a day or two...

so according to the guys at the shop, a stock 99 subaru legacy makes "around" 90 whp on the dynojet

my first run, untuned with catback exhaust, air filter and snorkus removed, and a lightweight pulley on 89 octane gas
95.72hp@6600rpm 116.62@6300rpm

had a bunch of runs, went through about 2-3 hours dyno tuning time with the guys working hard on my car almost the entire time, was a great experience

after working through some issues of thinking that the safc2 was installed wrong (wasn't), then the OverDrive kicking in (4EAT) and F*ing things up, and then the ECU learning around the SAFC2 and the tune... to say the least, i was only expecting around a 3-4 hp gain, but was wanting the reliability.

well my last run, hot motor, hot garage, ecu starting to learn around the safc2 already....
122.71hp@5300rpm 125.17torque@4000rpm

max was 124hp, 125tq^
so a 29whp gain and an 8.5tq gain

to say the least i am happy!

i'm getting a zex wet kit(55shot), intake, and msd window switch installed on thursday, and i'm ordering a set of OBX equal length headers tomorrow after i finish my class work as incentive to get my work done.

wow, impressive gains! let us know what the new mods fetch ya on the dyno. Sure would be nice to have an AWD dyno around...I don't think there's one in all of Idaho. Guess I'll save up for a Portland trip.

(running some #'s) Isn't 124whp about 165bhp? Figuring about 25% loss? Remembering Reason's old dyno run, I'm wondering if there's quite a bit more loss. Maybe our cars are just dying.

Regardless, my car could definitely benefit from a nice tune.

It depends on the dyno. Some will come up with 90 awhp, but typically, a stock 165 hp/165 tq EJ25 will put about 115/115 down to the ground.

Also remember, the car in question has a 4EAT, and 4EAT's tend to sap more power, due to how automatics work.

Dynojets read higher than mustang dynos, and typically are optimistic. Automatics are tough to read because of the sliding 90/10 torque split...

we also had to work around the Overdrive... would have been fine if they'd let me be in the drivers seat, but being the first time i visited them, they weren't comfy with that. oh well. I couldn't believe how rich i was running with the few mods i've done, we leaned it out and gained an instant 10hp from the baseline read (which we did 2 of, just to be sure), then tweaked it for the rest throughout the top and mid-range.

yeah, i think i forgot to say that all this was done with an safc2, the tuning anyway.

i guess this just goes to show that you can throw all the bolt-ons that you want, but untill the car is tuned for it you're never going to see the results.

my power curve is absent any jumps or dips, almost totally smooth without any SAE correction, and this was with 87% humidity in 95F degree heat

i've got a shit-ton of school work to do today, i'll let you all know tomorrow night how everything went and post all the dyno sheets.

Reason

So you got about 7hp and 6tq more than I did with a safc2. I had a intake, lighten pulley, stromung mid pipe and SPT axle-back on my 97 GT w/4EAT. Drivetrain loss in these is around 30-35%. Mine was on a dynojet too, no tune, 3 runs fairly warm engine.

Here's my results https://sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?t=2980

Subaru's run rich to begin with. But with any car you can mod the shit out of it, the key is a good/proper tune. It maximizes the potential of your well spent money on parts.

Reason, your car was the shining example of what i've always wanted to do to my car, i just wanted to say thanks to EVERYONE for all the info over the years that enabled me to make the right decisions.

Reason- what kind of intake did you have on your car? i am having a custom CAI made today, installed tomorrow. weapon-r, ebay?

i wanted to clarify my mods, i have a K&N panel filter(50) and de-snorked(FREE), custom 2.25 catback exhaust with magnaflow muffler(225), and agency power lightweight crank pulley(90), and SAFC2tuned (125+120tuned)

still hesitating on the headers, has anybody had a bad experience with the obx EL headers from ebay? i've got a day or two to make the decision, want ALL this done by middle of next week.

How did you deal with the self-learning ECU?

tecnica technician
06-13-2007, 04:37 PM
I might have to get one of these and as for the obx header I know a few rs guys running them and they all like it but you do lose the boxer rumble

Svenerachi
06-13-2007, 04:46 PM
Huffer, I reset the ECU everytime i turn the car on. we checked on the dyno, goes right back to exactly how we want it after that. after about 10 WOT passes it seems to learn around the SAFC

as far as losing the boxer rumble, i've heard that it simply makes it less rumbly... everyone says that it sounds like a honda, but there is a dude that has them on his legacy around here with a stock catback and it sounds aiiight... kinda, but i think with my catback it will sound alot better, more or a grumble than a resonating sound (what his sounded like)

there are a few sound clips i've listened to on here, impressed that it didn't sound civic-like, i guess i'll just have to get them.

I was more concerned with quality issues, i'm used to things from ebay being crap, but lately it seems thats changing, especially with finding those spt exhausts on there lately.

thanks for the comments guys, i'm REALLY busy today and tonight, and tomorrow, hopefully i'll have some more dyno numbers for you tomorrow.

oh, and i'm not goign to be running a 55 shot anymore, after talking with Scott Siegel and a few others i've decided that on stock internals i'm going to go with the minimum shot possible. if i can get a 25-35hp increase i'll be happy, i'm not looking for max power, i'm just wanting something fun untill finances are in order for the swap i've always been talking to you guys about. I'm hoping this car will see me through to this time next year if i baby it and use the nitrous extremely sparingly. I know people have used nitrous fairly safely on our engines, but well if there's an engine in a crowd, not to mention my poor tranny, its my engine thats going to blow, simply because its mine.

I had an eBay intake, I also bought a eBay Borla knock off (nice header). I'm pretty much going to go the same route as I had next time around. I also picked up a Borla axle back that sounds GREAT. I still have that, I just need another mid pipe. Where did you get the safc2 for $125?

Svenerachi
06-13-2007, 06:48 PM
friend had it in the closet NIB

they are going for 125-150 on ebay last i checked

when you dyno'd your car was everything done to it, or did you add stuff later on?

Reason
06-13-2007, 07:14 PM
When I had mine dynoed it had a eBay short ram w/cone filter, Perrin lighten crank pulley, Stromung mid pipe and SPT axle back.

Svenerachi
06-13-2007, 08:21 PM
ooooohk, that makes sense, i was thinking you'd had it dyno'd with the headers on. i was starting to think my car really was a factory freak.

I think the extra bit of power between mine and yours was either just atmospheric or due to diff dyno's and my exhaust.

the muffler on mine is free-flowing, just a pipe with some machine-gun holes running straight through the resonator that they call a muffler.

I can't wait for the headers, i think that it will make a big difference.

so what the next step after headers and nitrous without going internal? is there anything i'm missing asside from the small stuff (TB bypass mod, and the intake spacer things you guys are talkin about in the other threads)

Huffer

I can't stop thinking that resetting the ECU everyday is going to fry something eventually. If not the ECU, then something else.

Sarra

Just install a kill switch.

Well for some small power increasers...
Igntion, lubracants (rear diff, transsmission etc), wires, pluggs, ported intake manifold, larger/ported throttle body (harder to do/find), light weight power steering+alternator pulleys, do you have a high flow cat?

Stock internals but more majro upgrades...
turbo with light boost (no more than 4-5 psi on stock internals, upgrade fuel inejotrs and pump, proper tune.), erm, lighten flyweel, but with any subaru, espially auto i really would not sugest this...last but not least 5sp.

Sarra

You're going to hit a point where it just won't matter what you do to the outside of the engine anymore. Then, you can start anew (swap in an EZ30), or pull apart the bottom end and do a full turbo build.

AJM
swap in an EZ30
Why?!?

I don't mean to be a jerk to you, but that is second rate compared to any of the turbo engines that Subaru offers. I suppose however, that if you were trying to be different, or could get one uber cheap it wounldn't be bad.

Sarra
06-14-2007, 03:15 AM
Hah, I meant a turbo EZ30, not a stock one. And the EZ30 is built better than the NA 2.5 liter motors...

LOL

well the plan is to swap the engine when it goes boom eventually, hopefully not within the next 6 months.

I'm currently looking at either the new 2.5wrx motor or an older sti motor or IF they are still available, i found a guy that rebuilds the old 2.2T motors, so that is also an option. but thats a WHOLE other thread.

i think at this point i'm going to be done after the headers come in (ordered last night finally) and get the phenolic spacers. then when boom time comes i'll just pull it all, part it out and start better than new

i'm thinking a tranny cooler isn't a bad idea with the nitrous, my tranny has taken some serious abuse.

OH, had a cool idea(or so i thought) i wanted to share with you guys. for those of you that need an excuse to make your hood scoop functional, put the tranny cooler inplace of a topmount, won't mount exactly the same, but it'll look cool and you'll feel cooler too :-P

Reason

I have a EJ22T motor for sale.

What about a high flow cat?

Svenerachi
06-14-2007, 08:33 AM
the OBX headers will replace the cat with resonator.

or wait, are there two cats i need to worry about? if so i'll just have them run a straight pipe where the second cat is at. i've got a catback that connects to right where the old mid-pipe connects to a cat, not sure if thats another one just behind it by the headers or not, but if nothing else its a resonator.

but yeah, i plan on going catless (i live in fl  )

Reason
06-14-2007, 08:38 AM
I thought you said you wanted the Borla style header. Those OBX EL header should come with a resonator, that may eliminate both cats.

Svenerachi
06-14-2007, 08:42 AM
nope, i want the POWER

hehe

i could care less about the sound of my car, it can sound like it does now (like a well-tuned harley) but if its not faster than a riced out civic, or the buik 3800 that took me by a half length last night  then it really doesn't matter. it will still sound good i'm sure, and if it doesn't, oh well, i'm 14hp better than i was.

i do love the jealous looks from the mustangs when i rev my engine

okay, sittin at the shop now... not going to be able to afford another dyno tune today, will have to wait till i get the headers. found a new dude to tune my car, so i won't be payin out the ass for another tune and numbers today.

i'll let you know how she runs on the way home!

OBX headers sometimes have a rattle in the collector. That's the only complaint I've heard with them, besides them almost always throwing a CEL.

06-15-2007, 02:58 PM
Are you tuning with a WB02 at the dyno?

You really should.

Svenerachi
06-17-2007, 09:31 PM
yes, thats the only reason i paid for the dyno time

Wiscon_Mark
06-18-2007, 01:00 AM
Why would headers throw a CEL? increased flow?

badbasser98
06-18-2007, 08:40 AM
All aftermarket headers for a sube are longer than stock and are most likely losing too much EGT before getting through the O2 sensors which would throw a CEL. If they are coated or wrapped you would have less of a chance of this happening... This is why my headers aren't on yet.

Svenerachi
06-18-2007, 09:40 AM
i thought it was the cat-delete that caused it to throw a cel, and so i would need an 02 spacer

badbasser98
06-18-2007, 11:13 AM
umm, if you have no cat installed then yes, you should have a CEL

Some people have experienced a CEL with just headers as well though for the reason listed in my last post. A spacer could probably be used in this case too.

Svenerachi
06-18-2007, 01:22 PM
are you saying they left the catalytic converter on with these headers? i didn't think that these would fit with the cat, that's why they included resonator (cat-delete) section... and for the added power

Jedi Taxi
06-18-2007, 01:33 PM
well, i thought that the O2 sensors nowadays had an internal heater built in.

Huffer
06-18-2007, 02:49 PM
^^ the O2 sensors do have heaters built into them - but they measure O2 levels... not air turbulence.

However, if air turbulence is great enough, the sensor can get messed up. Headers and missing cats cause the rear O2 to throw a CEL.

Depends on the car however.

badbasser98
06-18-2007, 03:07 PM

I missed the part in which you said you had the OBX headers. In that case you would not have a converter. Though you could have a universal high flow installed in place of the resonator. That may or may not get rid of your CEL code though. If you are running the OBX headers you should expect a CEL. I'm not sure that the spacer would get rid of the CEL either, you may want to get a electrical CEL fix to splice in on the rear O2 sensor.

Jedi Taxi
06-18-2007, 04:13 PM
why not splice in another 02 sensor that can handle the air turbulence, and put on a resistor on the feed back wire so that the comp wont have a problem with the different O2 sensors code.

Or, why doesn't anyone offer a aftermarket performance header that is a tuned non equal length header? my Bosal header on my eclipse is a non equal length header, and i love the way it rumbles at low RPMs. yeah, thats right, an eclipse that rumbles (an oddity amongst DSMers, most of them sound too rice)

Sarra
06-18-2007, 06:04 PM
With an aftermarket header, would the front O2 read rich, or lean, compared to with a stock header?

Svenerachi
06-18-2007, 06:08 PM
rich i belive

StatGSR
06-18-2007, 08:46 PM
Why would headers throw a CEL? increased flow?

Cat ineffecency, the SS headers dont maintain enough heat for the cat to work properly, so basicly the rear 02 doesnt like what its reading and you get a CEL.

subaru's run rich as pigs to begin with, and the more mods you bolt on, without tuning aren't going to do much good except to your ego. my car needed to be leaned waaaay out, i was at 15.2 stock, now i'm running iirc 11.?? not sure, but i'm going to have it re-tuned as soon as I get the headers in, which should come in today or tomorrow. nitrous is going to get activated as soon as i get the tach driver to run the msd rpm switch so i don't blow my engine/tranny between shifts

oooh i'm so excited. i'm going to have this build complete for a lil fun before i drop the ej22t in. man i wish i hadn't wasted all this money on this car, would have been so better spent on upgrades to the new motor. oh well, thats what i get for not listening to EVERYONE who said just save for an engine swap

badbasser98
06-19-2007, 04:52 PM
so why don't you stop before going any further and save for the swap...

Or part everything and use that cash as a starter for the swap. FYI, with the EJ22t you are going to hit a wall with the OBDI vs OBDII issue.

Wiscon_Mark
06-19-2007, 04:53 PM
Depends on where he is. If he has an ECU to go with that EJ22T, there should be no problems, assuming he doesn't deal with inspections.

Huffer
06-19-2007, 05:53 PM
You could always apply for a waiver on the OBD thing if you're not running a stock ECU - they will instead do a visual inspection for a cat, and a tailpipe sniffer test.

Reason
06-19-2007, 09:26 PM
He is talking about having a place do the swap for him. If it's a place like ECS they can do the swap no problem. I already asked them since I was going to do this swap. He lives in Florida and as far as I know they don't have emissions.

Svenerachi
06-20-2007, 11:32 AM
yeah you guys forget that i live in the little land of bush (Jeb)

this means that you can drive your SUV that you have modified to specifically emit more greenhouse gasses without any worries from the law. hell i'm sure you could get away with strapping an ozone generator ontop of your car, short of killing someone and everything in your path i can't see any legal barriers.... in florida anyway.

Went to bank today, they won't even think about financing something like this, went to school to see if my loan was coming through anytime soon, they said "What loan?", so i'm up a creek without a paddle

oh, and as far as parting out and using that money to finance an engine swap, the idea is to get the money for the swap saved up, and use the money i earn from parting out to go into performance parts for the new engine. already got a dude thats waiting for my nitrous kit, willing to pay 450 for it (100 more than i paid), plus all the other stock goodies i'll be able to sell on ebay and such. it'll be a pain, but it'll be worth it in the end when i'm driving my super sleeper.

Reason, again sorry that didn't work out, would have been nice to be driving a car that i could honestly slap a 22B emblem on
