Here's the deal. I had a student today in a honda passport. As the day went on he told me he originally was supposed to bring a subaru but "the engine broke". I said yeah, I bet it was an outback with a blown headgasket. He said "yeah it's a headgasket!" Later he mentions how they've had a few other problems and they are going to sell it without fixing the motor... Well talked to the father. Here's the scoop.

It's a 1999 Subaru Outback limited (leather, heated seats, power mirrors, I think sunroof) etc... automatic with 140k miles. The timing belt was done at 70k miles, the transmission had to be rebuilt at 110k miles, the speedometer cluster was replaced because the speed wasn't registering correctly and it's had a CV axle replaced.

The dad told me he just doesn't have time to fix it and the dealership wants $2700 to fix it. He said he thinks it's worth about $2-2.5k. So now is the dilemma of if I should flip it.

I figure 2,500 for the car, and then $600-800 to do the headgasket and timing belt, and then I could sell it here in colorado for about $8,000... But I don't have that kind of money right now.

What do you guys think? This is a 99, so that is still a DOHC EJ25 correct? So the timing belt is a little trickier. I'd obviously have to pull the motor as well.

If the car is in good shape I would fix it, transfer any good and or performance parts from your wagon and get rid of the green monster.

I wonder if the heated seats fit in my 00 Legacy GT Limited? :)

are the heated seats standard in all LGT's (i know its an option), but the switch cluster that replaces my change collector is the part i need and just wire it up, or is it different seats.

I live in fl. i don't need heated seats, but if i've got'm and just need to hook'm up, why not?!

It's a green one as well  I would, but it's an automatic. I can not tell you how incredible my hatred for the automatic transmission is. The other option would be fix it up, sell it, sell mine and pick up a similar one but with a five speed.

Start with expectation that engine was overheated and needs rebuild, not just headgaskets.

Agreed. Especially if the tranny needed a rebuild. Sounds like it was driven hard or not well maintained.

If it came down to it, you could drop in an EJ22E for dirt and still make out like a bandit.

id say do it, whats the worst that could happen? if you got tight for money after you've fixed it, just sell it for less then 8. Your profit wont be as big, but profit is profit...
