Well, it finally arrived at my house tonight!!!! It's been several months in the making, but she's finally out of storage and at my house now...
Of course my neighbor Matt (legacy92ej22t) stopped by to check it out and was pretty stoked too. I will snap some photos tomorrow. It was much too dark to get anything worth while tonight.

Mods list that I'm aware of consists of:
rear LSD from a '91 Legacy turbo
'98 2.5 DOHC heads
T04E (T3/T4) turbo
Spearco FMIC
Apex'i style muffler
Sprint lowering springs
'99 Legacy GT stock seats
and likely a few other things I'm not aware of just yet.

The story on the car is it belonged to a very good friend of mine who purchased it cheap as a project vehicle but ran out of money & time before he was shipped off to Army boot camp and then to Korea to be an MP. So I am in the process of purchasing it and finishing it up to show off to him when he gets back to the states in the spring of '08.

Wow I can't wait to see pics. Pretty neat story about getting it from your friend. I'm sure it will make his return even better to see it all fixed up! So did you purchase it from him, or are you just holding onto it until he gets back?

Purchasing it for $1,000. He was asking around $1,600 to everyone else, but no one came up with the cash. So he told me if I wanted it that he'd take $1k as long as I finished it up for him & he got one hell of a ride when he gets back home. I don't plan on letting him down!

Also forgot that it came with aftermarket 2 1/16" digital gauges for oil pressure, boost/vacuum, & air/fuel ratio.

There was one locally that just sold for $3,000 in slightly modified condition w/ '97-'99 GT wheels. I don't plan on parting with my new baby any time soon!!!

I don't know. I'm kinda partial to a wing since my '98 GT has one. We'll see when body work time comes. I have to contact 2 local Subaru specialty used shops and see what non-dented parts I can get (doors & fenders). I really don't want to have to hammer & slap a ass load of Bondo on everything for it to come out smooth.

And yes Matt, the trunk holes are temp. covered with duct tape, but I'm going to head to Lowes in the next day or so and get rubber plugs/caps. Thanks for the reminder though!

Glad everyone is linking it. I sent pics to my buddy in Korea of it cleaned up and he's so totally missing the car, but damn glad it's in good hands now.

Thanks very much fellas. Once I get some needed parts around, I may have a garage day at my place offering food & beer. Anyone who needs or wants stuff done can swing by while the turbo Leggy gets worked on also.

Astin, we still need to make a stay bracket for your Weapon*R intake tube.

i'd definetly be down for a garage day. and yeah i do need that bracket, although i've been thinking of just getting a cold air one instead of the short ram...

Well, it's official... The wife is extremely happy my focus has been swayed away from her GT and to the SS now. She grew tired of me tinkering with the daily driver all the time (Scotty, we need more power!).

So now it's all out custom stereo install time, and getting the T3/T4 situated so that everything will line up better. The A/C compressor was removed (weight reduction, just kidding!) since it was already unhooked at the firewall by my buddy when trying to install the upgraded turbo. I need to remove the aluminum core from the behind the radiator too. So if anyone needs A/C parts, take 'em...

She'll be changed to 5sp (currently 4sp due to no 2nd gear) soon thanks in great part to Matt (legacy92ej22t) for donating his old stock SS tranny to me. Sometimes it pays off when a wife makes someone clean out all the stuff laying around the house (not always though).

Also, Matt & I debated over many different ideas with the car and it's current set up. After much thought between him & I, I've decided that I will end up parting with the T3/T4 turbo and going TD04 or 16g ( <--prefer that one if at all possible).

This will allow for a much easier time of mating up exhaust components and plumbing out to the FMIC. All & all, I'm looking for reliability over high HP at this point. Once I know the wife's car has a solid EJ25 motor again, then maybe I'll tinker around with it some more...

Stared out with this for $1,000 ( 9/2007 ):

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e179/dropdfocus/Subaru/92%20Legacy%20SS/IMG_0141.jpg

Seemed like a great deal until the more I worked on it, the more body started to show it's true colors (rust color). I came to find out that a LOT of deep rust was covered up and filled in by many pounds of Bondo. I took a closer look under the car and the rot was far beyond what I expected.

So I put the project off while I could figure out if swapping the parts to another car would be best or just try and fix what I had sitting next to my garage. As it would happen, waiting paid off big time in the form of another Legacy SS in PA but this one would require being trailered home because the transmission only had reverse and even that was on it's last legs. He let the car go for very cheap because he needed money for college classes & books, along with the fact he had aquired over 10 Subarus and his father wanted most of them gone ASAP!!!

Here is the most current vehicle for $950 ( 8/2008 )

Well, many months have passed me by and much has changed on "Trixie". I've had a lot of help from local friends (Joe, Alan, Spencer (Strat), Dan (VermillionX) and Matt (legacy92ej22t) who come over to lend a hand on her. It's looking like this weekend I'll be starting her up for the first time since August 2008!

Current mods list consists of:

To be installed soon:
Skunk2 coilovers
KYB AGX adjustable suspension
Whiteline front & rear swaybars
Kartboy swaybar end links
Deadbolt TD005H-Super 16g turbo
Slowboy Racing front mount intercooler kit (with S/S piping)
Fully Blueprinted & Balanced motor
EJ20G JDM WRX heads & intake manifold
STi 550cc injectors to be modified to a larger flow rate
'00 Subaru Impreza RS dash & gauge cluster
4-point race harnesses
B-pillar harness bar

Once I get all the motor work done on the spare EJ22T motor, that will be reassembled and dropped into the car to replace the stock block. Then the SBR FMIC kit gets installed and the rebuild Super 16g turbo goes on. After all the parts are placed into the engine bay, then the car goes off for dyno tuning and I'll be shooting for 325-350chp. I have Mike at Slowboy Racing offering to help out with any motor work I am unable to do in my garage. So that is a big positive right there!

Ok, we got it started only after replumbing the PCV system to the custom intake. D'oh!!!

Well it ran, and it WAS loud...until...I smoked the TD04 turbo.  Apparently it didn't prime well enough and it ran dry for to long before it got the proper oil. The oil seals blew out and it started puking oil through the TMIC & down into the throttle body causing it to shut off.

I quickly sourced another TD04 (couldn't use my TD05-16g because it has too much shaft play & needs rebuilt) and Spencer (Strat) & I reinstalled the donor turbo. It is installed but we ran out of time this evening to have it completely put back together. I will be back at it again after I come home from work (yup, I have a job again!!!).

(3/26/09)
Well after swapping in the 2nd turbo it spit oil through the intake again even after taking the time to correctly prime it. :-(

So I am left to believe I did not ruin the first turbo (which I took the time to port and gasket match). It seems like I am sucking oil up out of the crank case breather & into the intake through one of the breather lines. I am running a custom designed intake setup using silicone reducer elbows and a custom made T for the recirc hose to dump into. The factory intake has like 4-5 breather/vacuum ports & we ran them all together into one line which seems like the culprit at this point. I'm slowing starting to get beat down by this project being so damn close and yet VERY far away from being road ready. :unamused: I'm far from amused at this point in the game.

It rained today so I pushed it outside to purposely get wet and then took out a bucket with hot water in it and gave her a warm water bath. Used a shammy to dry her off and put her to bed in the garage for the night.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________

(3/28/09)
NEW UPDATE:

OK, the good news first!
The problem was that the car was creating enough vacuum to suck oil from the crank case breather since factory it T's off from the line going to the PCV. I eliminated the extra line and just ran the crank case breather directly to the PCV. The IAC valve is the only item running to the intake tube. The valve cover breathers have a simple APC breather filter attached to the tube which is bolted to the TMIC.

We used one large bottle of rubbing alcohol to rinse out the oil out of the TMIC. Once that was done it was reassembled and we prepared to start it up once more. It did take a bit to clear any of the oil & crap out of the motor which had be puked into it earlier.
It officially runs under it's own power finally!!!!!!!!!! :!:

Now for the bad news:
I got the car with a bad tranny and I pulled a spare 4EAT from the previous project car. It's sadly looking like that transmission is bad as well. :-( So it's time to start saving my pennies up for a 5MT from another Legacy SS. I want to run that vs. the WRX tranny because of the different gear set ratios. This will only be temp until I get the straight cut gears (1-4, stock 5th) transmission sometime down the road. This will have no problem handling 350 crank horsepower (my end result power goal).

I will be posting pictures very soon and a video clip of the car running on just the 3" downpipe as well.

Thanks very much! :smt023 It took me 6 months of on again / off again work & parts purchasing to get it to the point its at now. Once she's 100% road worthy, the process of cleaning up the front fender dents & factory spoiler paint peeling will begin.

Then after I have everything ready to drop my "built" EJ22T/EJ20G motor into the car, then the rest of the goodies will be installed (Slowboy Racing FMIC kit *designed for WRX*, TD05-16g, Tial 38mm EWG & uppipe, etc.).

It has been a labor of love so far! If I didn't enjoy Subarus so much this project would never have gotten this far.

Finally got pics of the the Oil Filter Sandwich Plate installed with the Oil Temp sensor and remote feed line for the Oil Pressure sensor.

The braided line and sensor wire run were covered with hose to keep debris away and reduce wear and tear from anything rubbing through. Ran with the car over the weekend at an AutoX event and heat was not an issue with the rubber. I took the picture before I ran split loom over the exposed wires as the were snaked up into the engine bay at along the firewall. The plastic fender liner does protect the Oil Pressure sensor very well.

Also, the PTP Racing turbo blanket did an amazing job reducing heat soak to the TMIC!!! I do plan on adding a Grimmspeed metal heat shield to further contain the heat along with wrapping the U/P, D/P & exhaust manifold.

Well my wife and I welcomed a new car into the family. Robyn ditched her Dodge Caliber for an '07 Impreza wagon! So I donated the K&N panel filter from my Legacy and then decided to tear my car a part and design a true cold air intake for it...using spare parts just chillin' out in our basement.

Thanks for the kind words. I've put a LOT of work into making this car as clean as possible and making any mods relatively hidden from the outside. I want the car to be under rated and unsuspecting to the average person.

Likely thoughts or comments from people who look at my car in a parking lot:
Big muffler - big deal
Multiple gauges screwed to the dash - Ok Mr. Ricerboy!
Hella Supertones - My girlfriend has those, nothing special there.
Harness bar and harnesses - Yeah, I bet that adds like 50hp!

Latest news:
March 6th I got the official word that I had been approved for sponsorship from GrimmSpeed (http://www.grimmspeed.com) towards the 2013 SCCA Autocross season!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok, I've just dealt with having a crappy and extremely worn out shifter assembly for a few years now and I finally hit my breaking point to want to swap it out. Since last weekend Mother Nature has teased us with "warm" weather, I figured there's no better time than then to jump on this! All of this would have likely been a very quick and easy parts swap if I didn't have to replace the entire assembly, but Subaru decided to completely mirror flip the design after 1994.

Got the car up on stands and proceeded to disconnect everything inside which was effortless. Moved to the underside and that's where it got complicated and became a PITA!! Both bolts came out without much fight which was a great surprise. On a side note, whoever it was that came up with the Gear Wrench deserves a Nobel Peace Prize!!! Most loved tool in my toolbox which just beats out the always fun and destructive sawzall.

Moved on to the piece at the end of the shift selector rod that sticks out of the transmission. This was held to the shift rod by a roll pin. Ok, no big deal, I have a long punch to drive it out with. After 10 minutes of it not budging and constantly jumping off where I was trying to hit I went to the work bench and modified the end of it to resemble a Snap-On punch I had for removing the CV axle roll pins. Used my grinder to trim it down to have a small centering tip so it would lock into the middle of the pin. A few smacks of the BFH and it got the hint and agreed to my eviction notice.

Of course the piece itself had become great friends with the shift rod and didn't want to let go. Many minutes of smacking a long pry bar into the backside of it and not making any progress it was time to break out the next toy...the propane torch!! Bingo, we have a winner!!! Two minutes of heat and a few quick taps and it let go.

Reassembling the new shifter went quickly, thankfully! l All the bushings are upgraded to urethane to greatly reduce any possibility of having this happen again. Wow, what a difference, it's like having a brand new transmission! Looks like I'll be swapping over to a short throw shifter at some point soon.

Here are pics of what was left of the "good" OE rubber bushings (shifter side). The bushings on the other side weren't even there any longer.

Also replaced a leaking upper radiator hose and the thermostat. As if that wasn't enough, I discovered that the coolant feed hose for the turbo was leaking.

While I had it torn a part, I picked up a roll of the DEI Titanium exhaust wrap (15') and with the help of my awesome wife, we got it all taken care of.

I spanked the Bazooka subwoofer on the way to work. Completely locked up. So I tossed in a spare setup I had hanging out in the basement in its place and I'm much happier with the bass response Went with an MTX molded truck box (Toyota Tacoma) with a 10" Rockford Fosgate Punch subwoofer. I installed it with "quick removal" in mind. One ratchet strap and a rear strut bar and we have a winner!

Drained out the Zerex radiator flush and used a blow gun & a drilled out rubber stopped to run compressed air through the system. After that I filled it with straight water and let the car run for a bit. The upper hose got nice and toasty, however the lower hose remained cool to the touch.
100% sure the replacement thermostat failed.
So tonight's project is to get the old one out and get it replaced and back together.

Parts installation update: OBX Racing Adjustable Lateral Links

Discovered the trick to removal of the famous stubborn 10" lateral link bolt besides PB Blaster is an air hammer!! It didn't budge the bolt but instead broke loose all the garbage that keeps it from wanting to let go. Put a nice long breaker bar on it with a little force it broke free!! This worked like a charm and the bolt was removed in less than 5 minutes on both sides.

The stock "mail slot" removed and a hood scoop from an Impreza 2.5RS installed for much needed increased air flow over the TMIC.

After:

I installed the DEI Titanium exhaust blanket on the up pipe and also added low density foam to the outer edges of the WRX intercooler. Sunday I ran at one of our local autocross events and the new 2.5RS hood scoop and foam combo did and outstanding job!! There is finally decent air flow over the TMIC and it after 4 runs in the afternoon it was cool to the touch (the car was never shut down nor was the hood opened to allow for a cool down). I checked the intercooler after the 45 minute drive home and it was actually cold! The car shows signs of enjoying this newest modification.

Newest goodie acquired!!! I've wanted one of these damn strut bars forever, and now I FINALLY have one. Trying to track down on from the 93-01 GC chassis has been the hardest part. I got extremely lucky to have a local friend removing parts from his daily driver to fund his new BMW Spec Racing passion.

Next the exhaust manifold needed to be addressed for the amount of heat that would be given off next to the oil filter sandwich and the oil temp & pressure senders using DEI's Titanium heat wrap and their heat reflective foil tape.

The Mishimoto oil cooler held up well at the autocross (big relief). With kicking the radiator fan on manually, it kept the oil temp around 180*-190* which is down right amazing!!

It's Christmas in July!!! The "new-to-me" steering wheel & quick disconnect hub got delivered last night and are already installed!

Cobb turbo heat shield finally installed after acquiring the necessary mounting bracket from the donor WRX wagon.

Annnnd just like everything else on the Lego, the shield had to be customized to clear the O2 sensor mounted in the top of the Invidia down pipe.

The latest WRX part added to the car on a complete hunch that it would work. At this point, the Lego almost has a higher percentage of Impreza WRX parts installed vs. Legacy parts.
It'll be even worse once the project WRX/STi hybrid engine & WRX drive train swap happens.

NRG short mount steering wheel hub acquired and installed.
It is half as tall and is sooooo much nicer. I don't feel like I'm driving a NASCAR with the steering wheel close to my chest.

Walbro 255 fuel pump finally swapped in and the car seems to really like it. The engine is a bit smoother and it doesn't act like it wants to stumble at low idle.

More upgrades for the Lego. Transmission crossmember bushings, magnetic oil drain plug and S/S braided clutch line.

Busy, busy, busy!!
Rust being removed, more parts being added and preparing for the last 3 races this season.

I learned last night that Subaru redesigned the clutch master & slave cylinder setup between 1992 & 2002. I attempted to swap out my rubber clutch hose with the s/s braided line I ordered from Mach V only to find dual rubber lines on my Legacy and a bent metal line to a junction where the rubber line runs to the slave cylinder. Nice thing is having the donor car sitting next to your project car and being able to remove parts as needed for a future swap out.

The Legacy is resting on jack stands awaiting synthetic fluid change in the rear differential and upgrade on the transmission crossmember bushings (Kartboy) and mount (Group N).

With all luck, I may have a possible $500 winter beater lined up: 1991 Legacy FWD & automatic wagon. I'll be so happy that I can finally take Trixie off the road and keep her from getting any further body/chassis damage from the salt covered roads!!!

Here we go again boys & girls. Racing at Pocono Raceway causes more 22 year old parts to finally give up or break/leak. The brake master cylinder reservoir began to leak at the connection seals.

THANKFULLY I have the donor WRX wagon to remove parts from and they swap over without much modification! The hydraulic clutch system got swapped out to take full advantage of hard line & S/S braided line upgrade replacing a very worn dual soft line setup which also included a expansion fluid expansion point.

New "race" brake pads showing up on Thursday just in time before the last two races of our SCCA Solo Autocross season.
EBC Blue Stuff pads for the front WRX caliperrs and Hawk HP Plus for the rear Outback H6 calipers. The only reason they are a mismatch is I came across two separate deals online that saved me $150 off of retail pricing, other wise they'd be all the same brand.

Soooooo, I just realized I'm a total slacker and I didn't report back on how the car did or felt after changing out the brake pads (front & rear) at the autocross last month. Well...they felt fantastic!!! I've driven 3 different cars with 4/2 pot calipers ('07 WRX, '02 WRX & '01 2.5RS) and just the pad change alone was quite close to 4/2 pot feel on OE grade pads. Granted the brake dust was amplified as both companies stated it would be. For the money spent ($120), I'm not upset one bit!

Latest part added to the EJ205/EJ257 Hybrid engine build. Picked this Impreza 2.5i long runner intake manifold up from a friend which actually has a pretty decent flow rate compared to the WRX or STi manifolds. Plus this eliminates the TGV's that would have been deleted anyway.
Port & polish work and powder coating to come over the winter months.

Off topic from all the performance parts but....is that WRX Sedan Carpet in the car?

If so, how did it fit?

dropdfocus
11-21-2014, 08:56 AM
The fitment isn't horrible, but it's not exact. From the B-pillar forward is pretty close to spot on, but it falls short of fitting the rear foot well. The molding of it has the carpet shy of tucking under the back seat. Since it was a million times better than the mildewed carpet that was originally in there, I wasn't upset for the $40 I spent for it.

ags18
11-21-2014, 08:35 PM
Good to know! Thanks. Yeah, really wanted to salvage mine but its gross, moldy and chunks are coming out....so its gotta go.

I'm going to need to do some mods to the carpet set I get cause of the LHD vs. RHD issue so adding some material to the rear might be in the cards for when I find a good carpet set.
