ive got a 99 25 in my garage to go into my 95 bd but i need to rebuild it.. i was thinking of putting my 22 heads on it
what would be the benefits and downsides of this.. ive heard u have to run premium and im willing to do that but im guessing its not just bolt on the heads and put in the gas right? i heard forged pistons would make this better?
any info would be great .. im starting to rebuild in the next 2 weeks
thanks

Honestly, it's not a great idea.

if u have a long block 2.5 i would just use that. or i guess u could maybe sell the heads and use the money towards the rebuild with the 2.2 heads. but really there isnt much more than putting it together and putting premo in it. but yea the onlything i would add to that list is a set of delta regrind cams, which isnt nessicary but should help.

How will adding reground cams help?

where did you get that it's not a good idea from that thread? As matt monson once said, " the 30 horsepower isn't that noticeable, it's simply better to go with an exhaust, intake and pulley combination."

I didn't get the idea from the thread, I got he idea but research and common sense. By showing that thread perhaps I was simply sugesting that people take full advantage of the search function.
.
I will explain this again, the first generation (talking the engine here not car) ej25 has an open deck that is too large. It will CONTINUE to blow head gaskets unless it's driven like a grandma's car or MLS headgakets are used even then you still might have trouble if you took said car with the hybrid engine to the track or floged it often. Which heed that is on the block is irrelevant.
Sure, you'll gain 30 hp ,but you still won't have a reliable engine unless you use the proper headgaket. If you took the same concept and put ej18 heads on a ej22 block you'd have a realible engine that you wouldn't have to worry about the head gaskets.

Better top end...If you're going high compression, use that power!
Honestly, a P&P job on those heads would really unleash things...Matt Monson said with all the supporting mods (pulleys, exhaust, intake, cams, and the 2.2L heads) he gained around 25whp by doing the P&P because the heads are very restrictive @ high rpms.
If you go with the PhaseII EJ25, you should have good luck with the MLS headgaskets. But I think AJM is being a little paranoid about the problems associated with the Phase I.

Gotcha. So you're not saying it won't work or that it'd be too much work, you're worried about the reliability. I can understand that. It's a risk I'm willing to take on an exploratory venture into my motor.

I get that, but I fail to see how adding reground cams will assist in building a reliable motor. ;)

More overlap in the cams would bleed off static compression and keep the motor from killing itself at idle.

idk what all this headgasket worries is about, you do not use a stock phase 1 HG to do the 2.2-2.5 hybrid. iirc u use the the thicker one for the SOHC 2.5 or some other, thats the only thing i am yet to conferm for my build.
and the other main thread that i am following on nasioc, the guy built a motor just like im going to, and all he does with it is beat the crap outa it in his rally x outback sport, and so far its holding up .
oh yea, i should add, it wouldnt be a bad idea to upgrade to some arp head studs while your at it...
