I would never have mounted the extinguisher up by the windshield. Under the passenger seat right by the slider mechanism is better. Proper rails to mount to.

They are 5800K, The HID's are brighter than he high beams. They HID wont cover much vertically, thats where the high beams come in.

Huffer: it is mounted on the panel but the 5 screws are longer than what came wit the kit because i have a metal late behind the trim, I had to trim down the screw tips though. So its not plastic holding it up.

I wanted it to be in arms reach just in case i messed up on my wiring lol

wait..so you have HID for the projectors and the high beams on at the same time? damn...thats gotta be bright!

I thought the HID was for the projectors only? how you get the highs to come on with the low?

subba
01-10-2008, 03:58 PM
I think maybe the USDM to JDM projector conversion wont allow you have both on at once but all JDM legacies with factory installed projectors work that way.

or at least get the SYMS EL headers to make them twin parallel instead of series. ;)

I dont think JDM BG/BD's came single turbo :-/

I will try and track down those headers, or you have any idea where i could get them from?

I was going to paint it gun metal but my friend who will be buying the car off me rather it this way, i didnt mind becuse its more cash to put in wagon #3

EDIT:
If i did convert to parallel would i have problems doing that with a VF33(Primary) & VF32(Secondary). I think thats what the stock turbos are..

the main outlet from engine is 38mm, up pipe joint to turbine is 43mm

the syms extractor will convert your sequential twin turbo to parallel twin turbo
it is suitable for all twin turbo legacy (BG/BD/BE/BH) and for all kind of TT engine (EJ20H/EJ20R/EJ206/EJ208)

Just 2 more questions,
could i run the parallel with the 2 different size turbos?
how would the ECU Adapt?

I want to keep the TT setup until we learn enough about it.

Not much people use the sequential setup, i might go parallel & i think awdterror is doing a parallel also.

I wont be converting for a while unfortunately, but is it possible to put a boost controller just on the secondary turbo? i cant for the life of me remember where i read that the ECU overrides any configuration to the primary turbo & SAFC.

One more question, not TT related, but which is better TMIC or FMIC?

Hmm interesting questions. IIRC the two turbos aren't the same on the stock configuration to begin with but that's for sequential. I think using the same turbo for each cylinder bank is only logical since any particular turbo has its own distinct boost, spool up, and other characteristics. You can probably use a smaller turbo than stock though, since each one is only working on half the cylinders.

I think I read the same article as you (some australian magazine scan and how much trouble people are having tuning the TT legacy)... you'll probably need to look for the electronic boost controller that hooks up to your ECU - replace that with an MBC, like what some WRX owners have done to alleviate surging/boost leak problems. The thing you'll have to address is the fuel map after that, since the ECU still has control for that. But running parallel would almost certainly need a standalone I think; unless you can stop the ECU from thinking a sequential turbo is still connected to it, rather than a parallel.

FMIC or TMIC...FMIC is better from a performance standpoint, and if you run the right sized turbo for the power youre making, and have the right piping setup, you'll minimize the pressure drop (that some people interpret as "lag"). Good systems have like less than .5psi pressure drops even with the assinine piping you have to use for a subaru motor.

TMIC is good for simplicity and lack of pressure drop; the caveat is that it's more prone to heat soak, and the size restriction limits it far more than an FMIC in terms of cooling.

What you're aiming for and how much power you plan on making should be the deciding factors whether which one is better for your application IMO...

subba
01-29-2008, 08:11 PM
ummm intresting, I most definately will do some research on the ECU situation and let you all know.

I definitely will be going with a FMIC, i never thought of size being a factor but it makes sense.

i dont think that you have to purchase the SYMS header in order to go parallel... i did some research a LOOOONG while back and found a website from a guy in england i believe who converted his car to parallel by simply rerouting/blocking off/splicing some vaccume lines... i have the diagrams somewhere around here... ill post them up when i get a chance

the way the series system works is through:

1- a valve that simply bypasses exhaust around the secondary turbo so that it doesnt spool up

and

2- a valve that keeps the passageway from the secondary turbo to the intercooler blocked off... it does that so that when the primary turbo spools up, pressure is created instead of all the air just going out through the secondary turbo

once 5k rpms is reached both of those valves reverse and the turbo spools up and creates pressure in the intake system... this doesnt happen right away, of course, and that in turn creates the dreaded VOD

i dont think that itll cause an issue with the ecu and i think itll create a powerband that is better for both the engine and create a car thats more fun to drive... im just too lazy and havent gone out to purchase all the vaccume lines and connectors lol

DOOK
01-30-2008, 02:47 PM
good looking car for sure. As for the turbo situation, if you're going true twins getting smaller turbos will make the system more efficient. A lot of times in sequential turbo systems they use an initial small turbo for fast spool up and a larger turbo as the secondary that is helped spooling by the first turbo and is the one that actually provides the larger power boost, at least that is the way the twin turbo 13B mazda motors work. they also have primary and secondary injectors, don't know about subarus though.

A lil update of the work i done this weekend,

As you all know the GT-B is up for sale because of insurance reasons :( sucks because i got a Sequential Controller on its way :(

What i did was switch the tophats of the front of the coilovers (the plate with the Bolts), Installed my strut bar & Installed my soundsystem & Converted to a cone filter system.
Started at 6am finished at 4pm lol with a long ass break in between tho

Pics of everything below, Engine bay needs cleaning but i plan on doing that later on in the week when i decide to tackle changing my spark plugs.

Future upgrades,
Grounding Kit
5spd Swap
Repaint Hood and bumper

I wont be giving this car up for a while, once i can get insurance on a TT legacy i am just going the buy a front clip then convert this, if i have a donor car the garage is only going to charge me KYD $800 for a full motor and tranny swap. about USD $980, Cant beat that anywhere.
Right now i am able to get a 5spd nonturbo but i done supplying the island with Subaru's so i am swapping this one

You have to swap the top hats side to side and then rotate them. Mine are within 10 degrees of direct camber adjustment.

Why don't you do an engine swap? The insurance company won't know.

subba

normally they wouldnt but i sorta told em off so they have me on survalance. I am switching companies so they will let me get a 5spd no problem, just not turbo. they said they want to inspect it after i do the swap :(

the problem if he swapped his engine. is if he ever gets in a accident and they see the wrong engine they will just cancel his claim and he will be out the money for his car.

^yes they will want to inspect it so they wont see it as a saftey issue

idk.. my friend had a 00 rs w/ a sti swap and he rear ended someone. he got his claim denied because he moddifed his car in to a different insurance class(rated on top speed, and other stuff). and it was not reported. but he had a real hardass inspect his claim. well i guess if he get rear ended im sure the wont open the hood. so they wont know

i was thinking about getting some OEM mudguards but i would get owed by speed bumps, You know my OEM jack got bent trying to jack up the car, thats why i had to take off the side skirt in the pic of the car on stands lol

They inspect your engine after in accident? Is that just in caymen islands? I never heard of that before.

Yep my rep will inspect it and if i hit someone their rep will inspect both cars and they will go by what my insurance company got on file, if it has turbos and my insurance cert dont say it i am screwed, i rather play it safe because even though i try my best to be a responsible driver, their is always lunatics on the road.

Got the car converted to manual, 4EAT Transmissions are heavy

Using the Stock Auto ECU with no mods, it was a bit rough driving it home but i reset the ecu and it smoothed things out. The throttle response is still a bit sluggish but i was told the mild remedy for that is to upgrade the grounding so i will be doing that soon. The car is finally semi-fun to drive.

They said they didnt see a TCU, the only box i saw was for the air bag :smt017 Anyone know where it is located on a BG?

How big of a job did that end up getting? Most of the time here in the US the whole auto-manual swap thing isn't that feasible because of the cost-value isn't really there... (i.e. cheaper to just buy a manual subbie in the first place).

subba
06-15-2008, 01:22 AM
They said it was pretty straight forward, THe only snagg that had was that they couldn't get it started, so they called in an electrician, he comes in, turns the key holds down the gas and it starts but shuts out, appearantly its one of the hoses on the intake tube wasn't pluged back in. apart from that they said it was a breeze because all the holes for the master cylinder etc.. had the holes pre drilled so everything bolted right up.

THe electritian prob scratched his head once but he jus said "oooK" 5 mins later my Tach & Reverse lights work.

THe swap was $540 (USD) + Electrician - 90 USD = USD $630
[I only paid Labour because i took the tranny + required parts from the GTB]
I literally did a swap on both cars, all i need now is a a/t ECU+Harness & a Auto Radiator to have the GTB completed.

labour for swapping both cars came up to (USD) $1080.

TCU is behind the center console, under the radio. Can't believe they didn't know where that was.
They had no clue what it was, neither did i, i thought it was for airbags. Not much Subaru Mechs on this island unfortunately, So i am going to have the ABS issue once thats disconnected... argg.

EDIT: The dang Dead Pedal Driving me Nuts, anyone knows how to take it off... i already tried Force + Flathead Screwdriver.

(The tint on the back windows and trunk is OEM, One feature of the TS-R models)
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/08/DSCF14281-1.jpg

I am swapping the GT-B motor into this chassis, i am going to fiddle with the Twin turbo motor to see what can be done to it, but if/when i am not satisfied i will convert to single turbo.

I did a lil modification to my Intake setup..... I dont like cone filters.
Dissected the intake silencer a lil bit. i cut off the entry side of the silencer/snorkus so i could put the fender plug over it, but that failed. i might have to dissect the plug for it to cover. (I know the duct tape is a bit ghetto lol)

when it has weight it handles great but last time i raced it, it was semi gutted and the ass end wouldn't behave but the fronts are amazing, i might try and get a different spring rate for the back, i guess its because its designed for a impreza and not the legacy.

Will be making a plate in my dash to put it and the Z/S controller and i am relocating the ECU behind the dash.
Also moving the power window switches to the center console also. It will be out eventually but not for now.

bleh i hope they fit lol

Reason

The dash will fit, it just looks off if your interior is stock. Since you gutted the car it won't matter. Good idea to go with the lighter of the bunch. You have any way to weigh the car when you are finished?

subba
03-09-2009, 05:32 PM
i think their are scales at my alignment shop, i am going to need to get the car aligned after i am dont so i will try and do it then. but the idea currently is that i am keeping everything i took out, throw em in a big bucket and weight it to see the difference.

deadlydave
03-09-2009, 09:20 PM
Is the tail end sliding out on you, or is it understeering?

If it's sliding out,
You could add negative camber in the rear to give you a better contact patch during cornering.

If it's understeering, stiffer springs.

If it's bouncing everywhere, maybe get some differently valved coilovers or struts.

its sliding, but for now i am giving it the benefit of the doubt because all the weight redux i did last race was at the rear, literally nothing to the front. the car had a stace with the rear being higher than the front, i am killing some frontend weight now and the front is getting higher so after im doine i am going to need to re adjust all fours, hopefully i can get to do it on the scales :)

Quick question also, which tyre profile you think would be a better choice for my wagon?

I am sticking with the GTB Rims, 17x7

215/45 R17 (What i currently use)
235/40 R17
245/35 R17

Here is my tyre choice.

Car looks sweet without the rails. I'm planning on doing that myself and plugging the holes.

Reuben

Wow, the car sure is coming along, you're gong to have to do the sound deadening soon, break out the dry ice :D

And if you go too wide a tyre, you lose the responsiveness, i recomend 225/45R17, get some toyo R888's or something, but if you want road tyres, Bridgestone RE001's

Hows the AVC-R btw?

subba
04-30-2009, 01:40 PM
I started the sound deadening but i ran out of refridgerant , i only got to do behind the dash :( *we dont have dry ice on this POS island lol*

For autox here their is two classes i can enter, Unlimited or 4WD and they are decided by threadwear.. Just threadware nothing else lol

the R888 would put me in unlimited, where i would get my but kicked by the pocet rocket cars like the usual suspects, 96 mirage HB (Full Race), a 80's RWD Starlet (Full Race ITB Carb goodness), Toyota altezza (Full Race), a K20 EK civic (Full race + ITB's) lol

The AVCR is sitting pretty... in my room.. somewhere, i need to get a fuel pump first, i am still using the pump from when the car was N/A so that might explain why i only get 11psi :(

Im running 225/45R17 right now and its pretty good so i might stuck with it thanks :smt023

xXGTBspecXx
04-30-2009, 04:40 PM
just get one for the GD series.. little or no mods needed to fit them in..

and quick question how hard was it to remove the sound deadening?? what did you do? i need to take that stuff out of my STi and it doesnt peel up.

subba
04-30-2009, 04:47 PM
i use the A/C Recharge kit or freon because i dont have access to dry ice :( all i did was spray it on the deadening and give it like 10 seconds then i used a hard putty knife and a hammer then start knocking under the edges and it will lift up after each knock.

I might have to repaint my whole inside when i am done and i would reccomend anyone who use this method to do that.

Reuben
05-01-2009, 12:06 AM
Just get a caged fabbed. And if you do get it painted, you can finish off the sound deadening job with a grinder.

Also, get that fuel pump in ASAP, i'm amazed you haven't blown the engine up already!

Sweet, R180 swap!

I might actually be able to help you on that one too. Maybe. Will look into shipping and price, could be much cheaper, could be a waste of time..

At any rate, you'll need to post up your tranny code, but i'm pretty sure it'll be a 4.444 gear box you have.

subba
05-04-2009, 11:50 AM
R180 swap? ur a bad influence on my pocket.

depending on if my ring gear made it through this whole ordeal, all i need is axels and a diff pumpkin. i already have a suretrac LSD from a JDM bugeye.

I am trying to find a TTBD in japan but im better off finding a RHD Corvette.

I am considering buying a 1.3 Turbo starlet, gut it, throw on suspension and call it a day.

if i blow the motor, i can get a replacement block for like 300 bucks lol

subba
05-08-2009, 12:28 PM
the shell is undecided, if any of you guys want something, i will let stuff go for cheap to you guys because shipping is a beach. i wont be making much but i rather see you guys with uniqueness than having them sit in my yard to dry rot lol

Drivetrain and stuff like that will be local.

Hey Subba if you still have the front bumper, as it so happens, I have an SR-5 rear axle that I no longer need (got a GT-S rear with LSD) that would make for a great spool axle for autox/drifting/etc. Of course I'm basically broke so it'd have to be a trade. You know, shipping price for shipping price. Might throw in some various other OEM AE86 parts if you want (don't have much though, basically just the interior, and even that's not in terribly good shape).
