Silverstars

I put on a set of silverstars on our 95 Legacy and see a great improvement in illumination. They definitely last much less long than regular or standard headlights, but they perform outstandingly well and do not burn up your wiring harness.

I just put a low beam silverstar today in my 04 Accord and the comparison to the stock one on the other side is impressively evident. The light is whiter and brighter and the illumination is superior. The Accord has great reflector design for optimum light dispersion and effective lighting pattern hitting the road in front of you. The silverstars enhance this already excellent set up.

I recommend them, but beware, they do not last as long as regular lamps. Why some people are experienceing outrageously short lengths of time is something that should be investigated. Such short use periods has to indicate another problem contributing to this ridiculously short period of usability.

The fact is, however, that silverstars do not last as long. This is a trade off for using silverstars. Maybe ultrastars are better. They claim to last a lot longer but are more expensive. Like 50 dollars US per pair at walmart.

I'm having problems with intermittent speedometer not working. I'm not sure if the odometer continues to work or not but I have been worried about this problem and wonder if it can cause serious damage. Does anyone know if this can cause expensive problems: intermittent speedometer not working?

I have heard that touching high-power bulbs like that with your fingers transfers a small amount of oil to them and shortens their life.

Did you put yours in without touching the glass?

It's probably not that, although you can ruin a bulb by touching it (applies to pretty much any halogen bulb).

Silverstars are generally short lived, and IMO have a terrible spectrum of light that doesn't do much in rain, and causes more eyestrain on lighter colored (cement paved) roads.

I would definitely recommend that if you want to buy bulbs from the local stores, go with the Sylvania Halogen Xtravision bulbs, they put out a non blue tinted light, put out just as much light, and last a lot longer.

silverstars are crap, atleast they were when i used to have them. I got them at Advance for $40 and they make no difference than stock bulbs. Now i have HIDs :twisted:

Get some european osram silverstar/narva/phillips in the +50% category.

I bought one of these for my Dodge 05 pickup that has a silverstar on the drivers side. I will be able to compare them side by side. I hope I like the Xtravisions, they are less than half the price of the silverstars.

The silverstars really don't last long.

I HATED my silverstars and even tried to return them, but that didn't happen...

I went back to stock $4 bulbs.

I ended up giving the silverstars to Brotherz Racing here locally for helping me with my intake and nitrous.... they looked at them and threw them into the garbage.
nuff said.

Where do you get the osram silverstars in the US?

Do they sell them a w mart or elsewhere?

I bought a Sylvania XtraVision. Is that the same thing or something different?

I have been happy with the light output of the Silverstars in my Dodge pickup, but am always looking for something better. The Silverstars are Very expensive. The dispersion pattern of the light is not totally uniform either. It is bright in certain areas and washed out in others, all of which are generally directly in front of the vehicle. A more evenly dispersion of the light would definitely be better. This may be a characteristic of the reflector pattern in the light assembly rather than the bulb itself.

I've bought osram silverstars from various eBay vendors, you won't find them in stores stateside though.

The Xtravision line are sort of a middle ground between the US-spec sylvania silverstars and the euro-spec osram silverstars.

They aren't tinted so the light is white, not bluish like sylvania silverstars, but they don't throw as much light as the osrams, I would imagine they might have a longer lifespan because of this.

That said, the biggest thing you can do to improve the output of your headlights is to make a heavy-gauge harness, which will reduce voltage drop and increase the light output of any bulb. All you need are 2 relays (high & low beams), 2 inline fuse holders, some appropriate gauge wire (12g) and some terminals. More info from danielsternlighting here:

I figured I give regular US silverstars another try with the '01.

DO NOT BUY THESE BULBS.

both blew last week, 3 months old, 5 days apart.

Had problem with the Silverstars and switched to GE Nighthawks. They are brighter than the OEM and last longer than the Silverstars.
