What would be a good start for suspension upgrade for autocross. I have a 1990 legacy sedan. Not too expensive either

Tires. As sticky as you can afford.

Autox or RallyX?

They are a bit different.

Either way, tires.

Snows for rallyx, Azenis/RS2/RE070 other semi-street tire for autox.

well there is a autox coming up. But I'd like to do both if possible.

Then two sets of tires you'll be needing!

Well I have two sets so I'm good there. What about suspension?

rally and autox suspensions are on pretty opposite ends of the spectrum. Rally needs soft spring rates, lots of suspension travel, no rollbars for max articulation, and alignment isn't such a big issue because the surface is really loose. Autox needs stiff rates, aggressive alignment (neg camber, more caster, toe out), big rollbars, etc.

If you really need to add a supension part, add a rear swaybar and see how you do with the tires. Extra rotation is good in either case, for subarus.

I would go with upgraded swaybars and bushings - you might also want to consider the wheel size - smaller, lighter wheels will put the power to the ground faster than a big, heavy wheel. Also, when running race tires on an autox course, you'll have much stiffer sidewalls.

You'll have to ensure your modifications don't change your class.
