Can anyone help with information on badge removal... primary interest is in removing badges from the rear hatch on a 2000 wagon... will there be holes, or are they only applied with adhesive?

There are 2 holes behind the "Legacy" or "Outback" whichever you have back there.
All of them are held on by double-sided tape. Just heat them up with a hair dryer and use dental floss to get behind them and yank them off.
To get excess off use like goo-gone, or (personally I used) rubbing alcohol.

A dremel tool with a hard buffer took my excess adhesive off. Yeah, you will have to worry about holes. Pdawg had a pretty nice solution for that, but you could just bondo it after taking the plastic pieces out. (they're poor design anyways, because they're the reason my tailgate is rusting out  )

I used a hair dryer and dental floss to take my badges off. I bought a set of badges off ebay cheap. I believe in being able to go back to stock if I need to. I used a little nail polish remover to get the excess gunk off. I painted the AWD badge the same color as my car. Not to hard I have a black car and used it to cover the 2 holes .

Make sure when you do this that you check for rust and remove it if there is any and then seal it off properly so you don't get any more. I can tell you that its a pain when it starts rusting from the inside

I have a 99 GT Limited, 30th Anniversary Edition. It has a 30th Anniversary badge on the front left fender, as well as a Limited badge on both the passenger and driver doors. Does anyone know if these three are adhesive only, or are there holes? I'm guessing that they're stick-on adhesive, since no badge is placed on other models.
Also, the Legacy badge on the trunk lid - do all second gen years have holes behind them?
I removed the AWD badge today, thanks to the tip in this thread. I'd like to remove all of my badges, but I won't do any more if I have to fill in holes and get it painted. I suppose the 30th Anniversary badge is kind of unique...
Thanks for the help! I'm so glad I found this forum.

well it holds the adhesive in place. If there is no strain on the adhesive, then the bond is that much stronger.

Removed most of mine today. Just set in blindingly hot heat for a few hours and she peels right off.

Wow, looks sharp, like the WRX wheels as well.
What about paint fade? After removing the badges, wouldn't that cause the area that was under the badge to be darker than the rest of the paint? :-?
