View Full Version : Getting a new engine...HELP 95 ej22 vrs 96 ej22
I might be getting a new engine.
All the junkyards around me say they think 95 was different from 96. This is the ej22 we're talking about...Is there any difference? I was under the impression there wasn't. I think the only difference might be obd1 vrs obd2...I need to know soon.

the only changes would be those associated with the obd change over, which could be a sensor or two - not sure but I think your in the clear. mechanically they are identical
So as long as I swaped the sensors it would be cool?

I have never done it myself so I cannot say for absolutely sure yes - but logic dictates yes it should be a simple plug and play
Thank you!
I've heard that some 95's are actually obdII anyway...

Mine is--I've used the advanced auto obdII scan tool.

Yeah, the 95 is OBDII.
However, the heads could be different (single vs. dual port).
The block itself is the same.

learn something new every day, so Subaru started changing to OBDII in 95 - cool. Most other manufacturers changed in 96, I will have to investigate for curiosity sake lol

I have a 95 with the 2.2 and it is most definitely OBDII. I don't remember the build date off hand.
It is dual port, and breathes a lot better in the upper rpm range- mine will pull hard until about 5250-5500rpm, whereupon it falls flat on its face. I'm guessing it is more because of the ECU than the engine. I'd recommend getting the 95 DP 2.2 because you can get real equal length tuned headers for them instead of the borla noisemakers.

My 95 was off the line in September and off the lot the same month (to us).
OBDII.
I don't think it changed mid year. Why would they do that? It's a new generation.
The Impreza had OBD I 1/2 in the year 1995, I know that. It didn't change to complete OBDII until 1996.
Yeah, from my research subaru just made all 95's obd2.
Single ports dont have any aftermarket header support.
Dual port would be nice, but I would still get the unequal lengtheaders...its a matter of nice vrs rice. Dual port would also make any turbo prodject eaiser, but really I like n/a.
I allready have alot of mods that will be swapped over.
Basically the engine i'm getting is a 95 ej22 with about 80k on it for $400ish.
I plan on keeping my old ej22 with only 109k and posibly just repairing it, or making the ej18-22 hybrid i've always wanted.
Thanks everyone for the help.

PM Gato GT about the 95 OBD systems. I know the reason why he wanted a 95 Legacy was because it was OBDI, For inspection reasons.

the only thing I've heard is MAYBE the sticks but really I think that's a myth.
Ethier way all that is needed is some sensor swaping.

I haven't owned my leg for a very long time - couple months - but went and looked yesterday - OBDII port as well. well at least that makes diagnostics easy lol

Wrong. The 95 is OBDII. However, OBDII wasn't standardized in all automobiles until 1996, so he probably wouldn't get scanned like an OBDII car would at inspection.

I know, I spent all last night trying to find something to prove it was split or not. But the reason why he was looking for a 95 I guess in NH 96+ gets tested for emissions.

Same here, 96+ must test.
