window cleaning tricks?

im going to change this so its about a legacy, so i dont get in trouble haha. but i need some ideas.

i just got my hands on a legacy (67 camaro) thats been sitting for like 15 years.... the front window on it is like stained and hard to see out of. its just hazey. any tips and tricks that might cut the haze? vinigar and newspaper doesnt work!

if by hazey you mean the white 'cloud' around the outside edges, there isnt much you can do for it i dont think. might have to replace it pretty much to get rid of a bad case of it.

no like the hole window has a haze on it. its mainly caused by hard water. ive found a few tricks im going to try, but im open to more, who knows if they will work. this is atleast 10 years of build up. might take quite a bit or a combination of several lol.

You can use a dishwash cleaner solution, a claybar and see if that gets rid of the problem.

The other option you have is to do what tinters do and use a razor blade at a 60deg angle, with diluted wash solution and slowly scrape (not scratch) the surface. It might work out.

Safelite Auto glass could probably replace the whole screen for $250.

yeah, we always used razor blades when we would tint windows on cars. Also would use razor blades for paint over spray. So that should work fine, just be careful not to scratch the glass.

yeah im not fond of razor blades haha! ive got some chemicals im going to try and hopefully after using all of them seeing which works the best maybe it will look pretty good. other wise i guess ill fork out the big money and have it replaced.

and wheres this safelite autoglass? never heard of it i dont think we have one around here, it would cost me about 500 to get a new windshield installed and the old one removed.

we have a company called, Guardian Glass around here that all the body shops use. they have really low prices. i dunno if they are in your area, could always check the phone book for them.

I work for Valeo wiper systems, we use bon ami powder cleaner and a regular sponge with the abrasive side between each test. you could also try 00000 steel wool with a Lubricant and if it is really bad try 0000 steel wool.

only places we have are action auto glass (local guy) with sky high prices and northwest windshields (small company that services the northwest) which they are the ones that told me about 500 bucks. i might be able to go to portland and get a better deal, but by the time i paided 100 bucks in gas and its a 2 hour drive one way id get hungry and have to go out to eat and blah blah blah id be an exspensive day and i really wouldnt save any money lol.

call up a junkyard, based on your Members Rides II thread, you seem to be competent enough to replace your own windscreen.

Or, go to a bodyshop and see how much they'd charge.

Or, check your insurance policy to see how much a replacement windscreen would cost you, then find a big stone on the freeway.

well im trying not to replace it. its big bucks and i figure 50 dollars in cleaning would be better than replacing, the window is fine just has age on it.

windows are one thing i cant do. i watched a guy do one and he had a special tool to cut the old window out and then those suction cups to pull it out. i dont have any of those tools. if i did and had the experience and patients yeah im sure i could. but its nothing i want to attempt, i took the window out of my civic because it was broke and thats the last windshield ill ever touch i had glass everywhere.

as for insurance, there isnt any on the car. its not street legal or driveable, the latest tags on it are from like 96. thats why im trying to get the window able to see threw so i can get it on the road and tag it and insure it and drive it.

and body shops around here are a joke. you guys need to come to this town lol. they would just call up northwest windshields (which is the company that quoted me about 500) and have them replace it, and then they would charge me twice as much. im not kidding, i got friends at all 3 body shops this town has, i know what goes on in there lol. this is a small town if u havnt figured it out.

i work at a alignment and brake shop which does a lot more than just alignments, but someone went into jacks asking about getting a body lift installed on his pick up and they told him 90 bucks an hour. he came to us to get a price quote and we told him 60 and he said well thats better than jacks. when in the first place jacks just woulda sent it to us to do.

I agree with the steel wool. If theres alot of bugs on my windshield, before I rinse the soap off when I wash it I usually take some steel wool to it.

i got the window to clean up pretty well, i took the ruff side of a sponge and this chemical i found under my sink, scrubbed it, sprayed it with lime away, scrubbed some more, then whipped it dry and clean, then took windex and windexed the inside and outside and its looking pretty damn good now!
