well as i have said to some, i was guna give the "50 dollar paint job" a shot with my wagon. i went with interlux brightside topside paint in saphire blue. Sprayed on with a HVLP gun and a little 2hp compressor. been doing a lot of body work to get to the painting stage, but the blue is starting the get sprayed on now. its lookin pretty kick ass, so i cant wait to get it finished, also just put my first coat on my bumper and drivers fender yesterday but no pics. im still yet to sand or polish anything yet, but really happy with the amount of orange peel in most places already. full progress can be seen in my album here..

That's pretty cool. The paint doesn't look very "deep" though, more of a "flat" color.
Any chance it'll improve when its buffed up?

^ yea the wetsanding and buffing should help it some i imagine. but even now the pictures dont really do it any justice. but im already stoked on how its turning out.
looks good! i love this paint job haha. after its buffed and waxed it actually starts to shine very well. but it never hurts to get it clear coated then it would really shine. done this one a couple friends cars and it turned out great.

^ single stage paint doesnt require clear coat. and i have no intentions or trying to clear coat it.
i realize that, i went to school for painting. but im just saying with this cheap paint job it shines good, but it never hurts to clear it to get a little more shine out of it if thats what your going for. like i said it never hurts, doesnt matter if it needs it or not.
ive done this 3 times now, 2 we just wet sanded buffed and waxed shinned great. one we put some pearl in the first couple layers of cleat coat and it turned out friggin awesome, nice sparkle with great shine.

Update! fenders, bumper, and roof are all painted. hood is wetsanded but only partially buffed, but it looks great. project is taking forever now since i only get to work on it during the afternoon on weekends (weather permiting), but im sure hoping to finish before snow fall haha.

and the first person takes the dive. Looks really good so far. The roof looks dulled (maybe harder to spray?), but the hood and fender really look good.

You should shave the side moldings while you are at it.

not really any updates, just got the doors and stuff mostly sanded, havnt been able to crap for about a month because of all the rain we have had up here. but going drive home to work on in next weekend to atleast get primer laid on the side moldings and door handles. then weekend after that i hope to get paint on the rest of everything.
that poor 350z looks outta place back in the trees lmao!
so quick question, what grit sand paper are you using to wet sand?

Everything is blue that needs to be blue!!!!! bad news is my camera batteries died. so no pix, but its still not put together anyway. ill have pics after assembly in 2 weeks, when i go home again and pull it out for the winter.
and SPR stuff is blurry because only the hood has even been started on the wetsanding. everything else is just how the paint fell outa the gun.

did you delete the roof rails, or not have any?
how do most people delete them? If I delete mine, anyone want them?!?!
StatGSR
12-31-2007, 02:10 PM
^ mine was without from the get go. no delete. i imagine the only proper way to delete them would be to take em off, and fill and smooth out the holes...

in my world filling and smoothing your referring to bondo/fiberglass. which is the worst way in the world to go. weld the hole closed and grind it down smooth.

+1, I'm trying to acquire a welder for my garage. Bondo can crack, the welds won't.

i agree, but hey we dont all own welders and are not big fans of metal work. but when i shaved the wholes in my rear hatch of the wagon, a simple alternative is to take a small piece of sheet metal, and jb weld it to the back of the hole, then fill the whole with fiberglass or more jb weld, and then mud it smooth. worked great for me.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2007/12/DSC01935-1.jpg
also, i managed to fill a softball size hole in my driver side door with kitty hair fiber glass, and that is holding up amazingly as well. and thats a part that is constantly getting slammed shut. sure its not the proper way, but it can still work if u use decent material and spend some time on it.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2007/12/DSC01892-1.jpg
have fun replacing that in the future. and just remember its not if it will crack, its when. because it will. the problem isnt vibrations as much as its expanding rates.
fiberglass does NOT bond with metal no matter what you do. and because they have different expanding rates the fiberglass will break away from the metal aka, crack. body filler on the other hand cracks with vibrations when its applied to thick. cracks for several other reasons too but thats prob one of the biggest. body filler is a pretty big science, the first mistake people make is buying the cheap bondo brand. that stuff is a joke. 2nd they dont mix the two right and get tiny air bubbles in it. and then they dont protect it so it draws in the moisture which can cause rusting under the body filler, and cracking.
when you can get a wire feed electric welder for a cheap as 200 bucks, that would work perfectly good to shave things/fill in holes, i dont think thats too far fetched out of anyones budget. and any moron with a tiny bit of practice first can work a wire feed welder, they arent that hard, so dont be scared because u dont have any experience.
and to me... fixing it the wrong way... paintinng it, having it crack and look like shit, having to rip it out... do it over, repaint.... shit that was well worth the 200 bucks for the welder to do it right the first time.
do it right, not twice.

i understand, but i dont give a damn about this car cause its not worth anything of note and i only plan to keep it for another year or two. so its not worth dumping more time and money into an already mangled body, im not building a show car, and more of it is guna rust away anyway. im totally with you if i was working on a car that i truly cared about looking great, but this wagon isnt worth it, and i still belive everything that i did was a great improvement over doing nothing at all.

There is actually science behind those vortex generators, but I doubt those will do anything significant, even if placed correctly.

Wow, that looks great. I plan to repaint my Legacy next summer, and I planned to do a $50 dollar paint job as well. Its going to be a real sporty red color with all satin black trip. I can't wait. My driver's side foor is really rusted up like your was. Is it really possible just to weld a new piece of metal in there and have it look flush? People keep telling me I need a new door, and I really don't feel like paying for one.
