View Full Version : Problem with starting 95 Legacy
With a 95 Legacy, if it sits for approx. 24 hours and I try to start it, it clicks, turns maybe halfway over and I have to turn the key a few more times to get it to start. When it starts the starter spins fast to get it started but when it just clicks, the starter does not spin. It always spins right up when the car is warm or after initially starting it. It has a brand new battery.
I am wondering if this indicates the need for a new starter? The dealer says it needs new contacts in the starter, possibly.
Does this make any sense to anyone?
If it is a dead spot on the starter, can I install a new starter myself? Are there any directions on the site to do so?
All ideas appreciated.
Thanks,
Duff

Sounds like a starter. Could be a loose battery connection too. The negative comes loose on my car from time to time and does the same thing kinda.
I live in Central Pennsylvania and a guy at a Mennonite specialty shop is going to rebuild my starter. He does only starters and alternators and will make them from scratch for old tractors, etc. He is familiar with my type starter and says that the contacts need to be replace along with the plunger. Sounds reasonable to me and is not too expensive at 45US plus 35 to take it out himself, which I will probably let him do.
Hopefully this will solve the click but not turn over problem. This morning I had to click it six times before it finally turned over.
Does this make sense and sound reasonable? If I let him do the whole job he might notice some other weak or corroded connections that I haven't seen. Actually I haven't even looked and need to buy a Haynes manual on payday.
I really like the car and hope that fixing it up will result in a reliable and durable car for my son, a new driver.

By the way over 200 miles on the new speedometer and not malfunctions so far. Immediately prior to the new speedometer the old one was intermittently failing for short periods two or three times a day.
