UPDATE: 3/12/2008, NEW HOOD!
Here are some bad pics with the hood mounted up. Big thanks to my little GF, I couldn't have done it without her help. Definitely a 2-person job. The new hood weighs 21 pounds. The factory steel hood with insulation and the splitter weighs 50. I'm pretty sure this is the only baja in the world with a CF hood. Pretty nifty.

Update: 11/7/2007 New pics, New Grille! The red is called "Regatta Red Pearl." Just wanna say this vehicle is great and easy to live with, even though it's an outback "skullcrusher" edition. For Ryu_Haneda, work your magic!
http://dave.phpwerx.net/photos/bajaturbo/front.JPG
http://dave.phpwerx.net/photos/bajaturbo/left.JPG

This is derived from an outback, which was derived from the Legacy, So I think it still fits here.

Oh yea, it was time for something ugly and fast. So I got a 2004 Baja Turbo 5-Speed. Subaru has like 40 names for this shade of red, so I'll just call it "blood red." I will say, it's been almost 5 years since I drove a manual, so I stalled a couple times, and chirped the tires once. I drove it nicely, but gave it some gas as I pulled out into traffic--and I was pretty giddy. You can tell when the boost starts to pick up.

Some Highlights:
-5 speed Manual
-T-U-R-B-O!!
-Clutch <100 miles on it
-6 Disk CD Changer
-Leather Interior, with ICE COLD A/C!
-30,000 Miles
-Ugly, in a beautiful kind of way. Like an A-10 Warthog.

Update: 10-16-2007, New seats in, wash N waxed, pulled the grille for modification.

Very nice, Baja fits here, it's a Legacy/Outback in my book. I almost bought a black one last year but didn't like the idea of having a "bed" (like a truck). For the same reason why I won't buy a truck, everyone will be asking me to use it in house moves, screw that.

So Dave what are your plans for it?

My friends wife has a blue turbo baja.

deadlydave

My friends wife has a blue turbo baja.

I was looking at one, then the dealer told me it was sold. The blue on the turbos is not very common, and very good looking.

And Shane, I feel you with the having a bed thing--I'm getting a soft cover for it asap. As for moving, the rest of my family has trucks/suv's, so they don't need my 'toy'.

Plans right now are minimal, but I want to spray the wheels gold, put a bed cover on, toss my stereo in, and a K&N panel, after a snorkus delete. I also wanna throw on a cheap axleback so I can hear the car--it's kinda quiet.

I actually do want to autocross it, once i get the hang of a stick, and run in stock class, so there's only so much I can do/afford anyway. After the warranty's done, we'll see how spunky I feel. Sponsorships are much appreciated.

awesome - I like those things in the ugly but beautiful a-10 fashion as well. If it wasn't a turbo AWD it would suck but its got beef behind it. My wife would never let me get one (she doesn't find it attractive at all) but I would dig it as a DD for her/the family.

Yea, I found a buyer. A nice guy named Jesse from Central NY, who's currently in Iraq. There's a problem though--I'm getting squealing from the front end and vibration in the gas pedal. I have to fix this before I can sell it.

And indeed it does have a sunroof. It was a fun ride, the thing moves quick enough for you to forget it's a 3400 pound porker!

Once I can drive stick somewhat well, I'm probably going to post a video review. I'll keep you all informed. It's definitely getting de-badged within 48 hours of being in my driveway, I think it'll really smooth out the look of the rather busy-looking tailgate.

But aesthetically, yum yum.

Well, it actually didn't FEEL that heavy. The #'s say that it weighs 3400 lbs, with no gas in the tank, so let's figure 12 gallons of a tank of gas at about 8 lbs per gallon = about 3500 lbs. It feels nimble, and didn't roll as much as i thought it would in the corners. the 50-50 MT AWD torque spilt probably helps--the legacy's 90-10 made it wallow into the corners. The steering was quick and precise on the Baja. I'll post a review sometime, hopefully with video.

I've been told this:
Baja Sport Auto = worthless (no guts, bad gearing, heavy)
Baja Sport MT = slow, but livable (good gearing and feel, but no balls)
Baja Turbo Auto = worthless (Gearing is crap)
Baja Turbo MT = Only Way to Go

here's a warning though--It only seats 4. The center part of the rear seat is a console/cupholder thing.

Wiscon_Mark

3500 lbs is heavy alright...

But it could be worse. You could have an 04 H6 LL Bean Wagon. That's 3650 right there.

No, the car's still at the dealership until tomorrow night. I'll snap some pics When I get it home friday night. I had the dealer hold it (after I gave him the deposit) for a week, I was waiting for 1 more paycheck to hit my account as a buffer before I paid the sales tax.

Nice find man.

Why was the clutch replaced so soon?

Dunno, the hitch mount wasn't even scratched, so i don't think it ever towed anything. I'm willing to bet it had been test driven a few times, by some noobs like me. Also, the dealership is located in a rather hilly area, so there are a lot of uphill starts.

Update for mods:
-Debadged the tailgate
-Removed silver pin-stripe from both sides.
-Momo Shift Knob (worn, but only $25)
-Snorkus Deleted
-Motegi spline-drive lugnuts (Leftover from the Legacy)

Pics will be up later tonight (of the debadged car).

Of course, I'd regret selling them the day after I sold them.

Here's some more eye candy:

Mods: Intake Silencer Removal, Tailgate Debadge, Momo Shift knob, new front floor mats, Motegi Lugs.

It's covering a hole, actually... :-( But you're right.

There is another hole covered too, by a body-painted color screw that i tossed on there. I just have to widen the 2nd hole to fit another screw into, and I'll be all set. I don't want to use bondo because the dimple the hole is in is deep.

Reason

A body shop can take care of that pretty cheap.

Wiscon_Mark
09-25-2007, 10:16 AM
If you removed the silencer, are you still using that ram air duct (the big stock piece)? I've been interested in putting that in a BD/BK/BG for quite a while.

deadlydave
09-25-2007, 12:01 PM
Yea, I'm still using it. At speed it re-directs the air from the grille to the fender, instead of having the air roll around the engine first. If i get a CAI I'll send it to you for the cost of shipping to try out. It's going to be a while though, like spring.

Weight bias FTL!

The weight bias is actually not that bad in the baja, they had to add a whole bunch more structure to the rear of the car than the outback has, to keep the body somewhat rigid. But the battery, and a hood replacement would probably help greatly.

I'm keepining the performance mods almost non-existent for now. I want to autocross in a stock class untill I get the feel of the car and the warranty is gone.

Planned: Lightweight wheels (stock size), R-Compound tires.

I got it for 10 bucks plus trade from the previous owner. He like the weight of the baja knob, which is 2 or 3 ounces heavier than the Momo.

about the clunking: check the sway bar end links, or if you can get it on a lift, or all four wheels off the ground, turn a rear wheel, and see if all the wheels turn @ the same time. if so, have the dealer fix it.

But...the Baja doesn't have a front limited slip diff...no subaru from the factory does(unless you're talking about a couple of special edition STi models).

Correct, I can't believe it didn't dawn on me before....It has an open-type front diff. Perhaps he meant the center diff? I'll check the tops of the struts and the tophats tonight. Dave this is going to be the sickest Baja around! Now are the eye lids real carbon or the CF look? Side by side it may look funny, but from a distance it should be fine.

The lids are CF look, but will be a nice touch to add a visual 'squint' to the headlights. In bright light up close you can see the difference, but in dim light or at an angle, it'll be hard to tell. I may also paint some of the inside of my headlights too--the chrome that faces out, not the reflectors.

Hood is the one from OutbackGT. Great Seller BTW. Vis is still making them to order, but they're a grand per.

OK. So, I see some people have been whaling on the new look:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/04/m1-1.jpg

Here's the place to discuss, woot! The car is staying 2-tone. I do plan on painting the hood, most of it, Regatta Red.

-The GOLD rims are 17's. The reason they look off is that the tires are undersized for a legacy. These are my autocross rims and tires for this season.

-The Gunmetal rims, you may remember from the legacy. These fit my crappy oem tires. They also clear the 4-pots, woot! Sadly, the paint is all but destroyed. I will be stripping them and painting them black with a red lip to match the brakes. The Rest of the car will be staying 2-tone because the cost and effort are something I'm not willing to deal with right now.

-I just got opensource tuned by www.getadomtune.com--Dom (http://www.getadomtune.com--Dom). Great guy, and the Baja feels like it dropped a tenth of a sec or two in the 0-60. The power is also more useable, and it's better on gas.

-Just found out I have H6 rears which don't look particularly pretty, but maintain a great brake balance with the 4-pot fronts. I'll be peeling these off to paint a matching red in the summertime.

-Picking up Blitzen axleback exhaust tomorrow.

SORRY I have been absent guys! My GF and I were sick, taxes came due, work was killen me, and my computer needed reformatting. I should be able to hop on at least every other day now.

yeah, the hangers are the biggest problem with the BE/BH/Baja...I would cut them and reweld the brackets, that way you can reweld the hanger a little higher so the tip can clear the rear bumper better...

*Update: coilovers*

Hehe, finally lowered the car. Not 'slammed', but I need suspension travel for auto-x and dd'ing. And no, that's not my STi. I have the damping stiffened to slightly less than the max reccomended for daily use. It's still quite livable, but the handling difference is amazing.

And the most important part, it feels like I'm driving a car again. A LEGACY.

Adjusting the dampening is easy, just flop down the rear seatback and remove the panel covering each rear 'cargo pocket'. Then crank to your desire. Adjusting height is something else. The instructions are in baaad Engrish if you get my drift. The 'easy' way to do it would be to just undo the bottom bolt securing the coilover to the hub, and 'unscrew' the base a few turns, then bolt it back on. the 'hard' way, which I'm not sure about, is to use the included wrenches to spin the upper body of the coilover, thus screwing it in or out of the base of the coilover still bolted to the hub. I'd rather just un-do the bolts in the rear or front...i'm not sure if the coilovers should be spinning independently from the tophats...Just don't know enough about the units themselves.

the first way, adjusting the bottom mount is the correct way of doing it... the second way you described will affect the spring rate and preload of the damper... not recommended... that is how people blow their coils.

sybir
06-14-2008, 01:44 PM
The second way shouldn't affect the spring rate or preload becuase the springs aren't keyed top or bottom, they're ground flat. You're changing how much of the threaded strut/shock body is captured in the static lower mount to change ride height without affecting preload. Tein's are the same way.

I use wrenches on mine; you loosen the lower collar, then you turn the body by hand or by putting a wrench on the locked spring perches; the spring perch height stays the same so there's no preload......

*shrug*

DOOK
06-14-2008, 02:21 PM
when I read it, I was unclear about whether or not he was moving the very top collar, which as we know hold the spring tightly against the topmount, directly affecting the spring rate and preload... now if he's talking about spinning the coilover body within all the collars and leaving the coil itself tight, sure I guess that works. It's much easier just to unmount the bottom and spin it that way, pretty much eliminating the change of screwing up your preload, etc... basically, long story short, as long as the shaft of your coilover stays showing the same amount, you're ok, if it gets shorter, you aren't ok.

deadlydave

nice. looks real good. what did you do with your RS rims? why dont you go alittle lower?

RS Rims, Stock tires, Stock Struts/springs, and stock hood will be going on for the winter. RS wheels are stripped right now, awaiting primer and a coat of gloss black paint. The hot and humid weather has stopped me from painting for almost 2 weeks.

It's not lower because my rear camber would be unacceptable if I were to drop it any more. Rear's aren't camber adjustable. I may drop the fronts a little more for a show this weekend, but too much comparative rear height cuts off my rear visibility with the tailgate  . Also, my floor jack can just barely get under my rear diff.

Dook and Sybir, thanks for clearing everything up for me.

Spent Saturday autocrossing on a Kart track against Tri-City Corvette Club and others to hone the suspension and test the durability. Sunday, I autocrossed at Columbia-Greene Community College in a Mohawk-Hudson Region SCCA points event. Both were so damn fun!

Most definitely. It actually has 2 wing extenders.
-I think it's a chargespeed wing-offset 'enhancer' that hangs the wing further off the back of the trunk(like the WRC wing).
-And he has wing inserts that look like "L" shaped pieces of polyurethane that make the wing taller and make the side pillars a couple inches wider.

The wing is level with his roof. It looks a little absurd, but seeing the thing moving and hearing it...It fits right in.

Quick update, Waiting for the last part of my 3" turboback to come in, then getting a slight re-tune from a friend to hold me over till I see my tuner next.

Oh, and a friend sold me a set of 4 only used 1 track day Hoosier R6 slicks. I'm going the be laying a hurtin' on SM this year, hopefully. For those not in the know, R-compound race tires can shave significant time off of autocross runs. In my region, autocrosses are between 30 and 40 seconds long, and drivers with about the same skill level as myself have reported losing a full second over their street tire time.

The problem is with the rear multi-link...I gain toe Out if i raise it, and it would need to be realigned. Plus, honestly, it's cold as balls in UNY right now.

Are you rubbing the quarterpanel or the strut? I'm thinking that since you already have the pseudo plastic flares on, you roll the fender quite a bit, or even cut it while still retaining the plastic flares on top (like what people do when they put aftermarket wheel flares)...

I was rubbing on the edge of the panel. Even if I cut away a tiny bit of plastic, I'd still need to bend or cut the metal fender underneath. These wheels have so much room for more brakes, room I'll probably never use.

I was referring to the metal behind the plastic. You can most definitely roll those with a fender roller to get more room, probably even more aggresively than on a BE w/o the plastic cladding as you wouldn't have to worry about the fender lining up with the edges of the bumper and doors (since the plastic will be covering those).

03-06-2009, 02:21 AM
Oh, I have a dirty plan. Step 1 is remove the side panels, step 2 is cut as much of the metal out as possible that is non-structural. But that comes along with completely gutting the interior, tossing the moon roof, gutting the tailgate...

I have to pay off the car first. And resist the temptation that is the turbo-4 Hundai Genesis.

This weekend, I was enjoying a sunday drive, windows down and music on. The condition of the road went from OK to gravel, sand, and stick covered. Over a blind crest my rear end snapped out on me and I lost control of the car. I had maybe half a second in which I fruitlessly tried to regain control. I hit a tree about 30 degrees from head on, airbags deployed. The front of the car is toast...but I had, no joke, not a SINGLE scratch. The car is currently in the possession of my insurance company, who is evaluating it. I'm so glad I'm ok and nobody else was with me.
