Just wondering if going to the dealer for a paint job is prudent, any comments. Am I better off going with a reputable independent shop? The dealer gave me a ballpark figure over the phone at around the $3500 - $4000 CDN mark depending on the condition of my car's body.

Cheers

If you take it to the dealership you wasting your money. Just take her to a reputable shop in your area, and if you are getting an all over paint job it should range between 2k -3k. a lot is based on body damage tho and if you are changing the color

if your changing colors its going to be crazy exspensive because you have to repaint the door jams and engine bay and things. if your keeping the same color it should stay below 4k. dealerships arnt worth it though, take it to a good body shop

The dealership would just source it out to another shop and not tell you, then tack on what they want for their cut.

Just ask the dealership which bodyshop they're going to use - then go there and ask for a discount for direct business.

Or call up your insurance company and ask them who they recommend in the area.

If you're staying the same color, and not requiring a lot of dent removal, rust repair, a decent job should run you about US$2000 - making sure the place has a spraybooth and oven.

That's not always true. Some dealers have their own body shop on site. Well a few over here anyways. But I wouldn't go to the dealer either way for a paint job.
