My car is making a strange noise when the automatic transmission changes gears. The noise tends to happen more often when the car is cold (morning) or when I have not driven it for a certain amount of hours. I am afraid it is the transmission. Has anyone had an issue like this before?

Possibly, is it possible for you to record the sound, and if not can you describe it better??

Mileage???

i will record it for you later today, but for now i'll try to describe it. it sounds like a growling/grinding/slipping noise. Mileage is 54000

torque converter? although that should not be going out at that mileage hmmm :?

Have you been changing the ATF semi-regularly?

How often does ATF need to be changed? I just got the car 2 months ago and I am assuming the previous owner performed the proper maintenance

if theyve been doing the regular maininance you should be in the clear on that. To tell the truth I dont remember how often ATF should be changed, seeing as ive never had an automatic car, I would just change it when I was told to when I worked at the service center haha.

Every 30,000 miles it should be flushed out.

It could be yours synchros also....

We will get a better idea after you record it :)

I have recorded the noise. After much heated debate, my pal and I have discoverved the noise is more of a rattle than a slipping/grinding noise. The noise is not coming from the transmission (I dont think). This recording is of my Legacy GT in neutral. I am revving the engine until 4500RPM and then slowly lowering to 3500RPM. The rattle is generated somewhere in the RPM range of 3500-4000.

Here is my recording: http://home.twcny.rr.com/deap9/rattle.wav

You can first here the noise at 13 seconds into the 40 second clip and then repeated multiple times by slowly decreasing and increasing the RPM.

The only sounds (besides you revving and hitting the microphone) that I could hear sounded like a heatshield rattling, which I hear all the time on my 95 with a 5MT....I dunno man. It's coming at odd times for it to be a heatshield, I'd have it checked out by a mechanic if noone else can figure it out :?

Something with the exhaust. I would bet money on it. Jack your car up, put it on stands and do it. Have your friend rev the car while u are on your belly and try to pinpoint where it is. Once you figure the general area it is at, turn off you car and use your hand (with a glove on preferably) and shake it and see if u can re-create it.

If it is the heatshielding, just take it off no big deal.

I took the car to the shop. Turns out the heat shield was the issue. Everything is fine now. :P

I was right!!!! yay :D

Yay for you too, thank god it wasn't the tranmission :) Where was the heatshield? Exhaust? I know there's one loose in my exhaust system, but then again, my exhaust needs ripping out and replacing, so I'm not concerned about it...

Glad the problem is solved :D

Mine rattles around the 1800 - 2200 RPM. What heat shield is it exactly? I want to fix it. Gets annoying after awhile...
