Well its time for a major service on the Suby and after calling a few dealerships to see what they use for MTF Im a bit disappointed. After reading about the Extra S OE Subaru fluid over on NASIOC I was hoping to find some available in smaller quantities and not only by the 5 gallon bucket. Has anyone had any luck getting the Extra S Subaru trans fluid in smaller containers and if so what dealership offers it. TIA

The trans shifts great now and Im not looking to possibly have problems due to the "cocktail". Im looking for OE Subaru fluid and where to get it. Thanks though.

Get some local subbie owners around you to work out a group buy. Each car is good for about a gallon (~4.5qts). So you just need like 3 other guys to jump in.

I change my fluid once a year.. I know that might be excessive but $60, come on!

I use the following cocktail mix

Tranny:
Redline 75w90ns x 3
Redline Shockproof Lightweight x 1

Rear Diff:
Redline Shockproof Heavyweight x 1

There's always a little bit left over since they don't take full quarts.

I know you already stated you didn't want to use a cocktail but.... cocktail?

think about it.

I use it and love it. Prior to the cocktail, I did have difficulty into 1st gear at anything above a crawl (and I mean single digit speeds), even at a stop it would crunch if I was a bit hasty on the lever movement.

In went the cocktail and no problems since. Been running it for 12,000 miles now. I purchased the car with 43k and it had the issue, swapped to the cocktail at 50k and now I have 62k and it shifts like new.

I suppose if you have no problems at all with shifting (even in the winter cold?) then you have a great thing going and I can understand even sticking with whatever brand is in there now.

I have no shifting issues whatsoever(cold or hot temps). Goes easily into 1st gear and all other gears regardless of engine rpm. I have the service records from the previous owner who was anal about getting all of the services done at the dealer. The cocktail would be ok in my book if there were problems. There arent any currently so I plan to stick with OEM. I contemplated the cocktail but after alot of searching read a few posts that werent so encouraging. Thanks for all the info.

Honestly, I have the cocktail Redline mix in my wagon, along with a short shifter and I didn't notice any major differences. It's still tough to get into 1st, and shifting to 2nd I can grind if I'm not careful. 2nd-3rd is smooth, as is 3rd-4th. 4th-5th is normal.

Next time, I'm just using regular fluids and seeing how that works out.

^^sounds like you have mechanical issues (like worn synchro cones/blocking rings, or a clutch that isn't releasing 100%), cocktail can't fix that. It does work magic if you are unlucky enough to have the common subaru issue of difficulty into 1st gear if not at a standstill.
