i posted this in the headgasket sticky, but i never count on postings in a sticky to get responded to.
is it 100% necessary to remove the engine in a 2.2 Gen 2 legacy (96)?
I would imagine that the 2.5 and 3.0 would have a lot less space in the engine bay, but is there enough room to get the work done in the 2.2 model?
To do a proper Job you should remove the engine. Still, removing the engine on a Suabru isn't that hard.

its a matter of not having a garage or crane

The Garage I can understand ,but if you and a freind can't lift the motor...then...wow. I can lift a ej22 (with no acess.) by myself carefully enough not to damage it. I understand i'm not the normal human when it comes to that, but i've seen alot of two man teams lift them just fine.

I've done head gaskets on 2.2 and 2.5 single and dual cams with out taking the engine out.

If you take it out, it'll be much easier for you to work on.
