View Full Version : Sound Deadening Options for Wagon Trunk

Between all the road noise, tire noise, and exhaust noise that comes from the back of that resonator box that we call the trunk, I've finally had it, and want to do something about sound back there.

I'm not really sure where to start with the sound deadening process. Hell, I don't even know where to get more of that carpeting underlay stuff that they use to quiet things down back there (mine got battery acid and then later water on it, so I need to replace the stock stuff at the very least).

I was thinking about spray on stuff as an option for some areas (like the hatch lid inside space that's probably causing the exhaust to "boom") or maybe even most of the job. Any suggestions?

for the space where the spare is kept u can spray but the trunk lid, i highly recommend mat dampening.

Use dynamat on the wheel wells, spare tire well and anywhere else in the trunk. Once you cover everything I would do a coat or two with the spray. My friend did it to his trunk lid, just the dynamat couldn't handle the wattage.

How well does dynamat stick to uneven surfaces?

Once it's on it's impossible to remove. It's pretty much a thick tar with a foil backing. It can be wrapped around anything. It can be shaped around groves and dips. You want to make sure there is no air pockets. I wooden or rubber roller would be good.

yeah and make sure the surface is dustless and has no form of moisture.

Dynamat Xtreme is 1/3rd the thickness and 30% more effective than regular Dynamat. It's a little more expensive but it's not as heavy.

You could re-layer the underside of the car with a rubberized coating also.

I'd check this out before you dump a couple hundred bucks into Dynamat Extreme:

Thank you! That's exactly the kind of thing I was looking for.

Dynamat is a well known name, and as such is really expensive. I don't doubt that their product is good, but I was hoping to see what else was out there.

I like this quote from that link:

My girlfriend came home from a business trip to find my brand new car's interior in the living room. She could not begin to understand why I would do such a thing. She accused me of loving my car more than I loved her and got no comfort from my assurances that I loved her and the car equally.

I got accused of that a couple time. I told the last one if you ever have to bring up that I love the car more than you it's probably true. So after a few months when she brought it up I said bye.

Another option is spraying rubber coating underneath your car in the wheel wells and the spare tire underside.

I definitely plan on doing that.
