Just placed an order for a stromung cat pipe and midpipe at boxer4... cant wait. of course now im dead broke.. and in college, BUT i am already looking for an axleback in case some $$ magically comes my way. so after deciding i cant pay $400 for the stromung or $600 for the scoobysport (which based on sound clips is the best sounding exhaust), i looked into Borla and found their Boomer series. they can be found here: www.Borla.com (http://www.Borla.com) ... then click univ. mufflers > boomer series (the direct link doesnt work). have you guys heard these mufflers or anything about them? Im looking for a deep, smooth tone, not a harsh, graty, throaty sound. If you guys know any exhausts that fit that description, let me know please.
one concern i have is where the inlet pipe is located out the back of the muffler... i know the stock muffler and the SPT one i have now has the inlet pipe to the right of the muffler, not in the center supposedly because there is something close behind the muffler under a BD and the pipe needs to go around it..
heres a quick pic of the borla boomers... some nice choices:

Belladona has a baffled turbo universal (Borla) on her Legacy. Sound clips are in a stickied gallery in engine & drivetrain I believe. It sounds real purty.

wailtail, good universal design

yea the wailtail looks really sweet... 5" diameter tip :)

IMO, 3" is plenty big on a Legacy (what I have). Hell, I even think that's a bit excessive.

personally, of the mufflers that are there, i would rather go for the blow torch or thumper. the rest will sound like crap....on a non subaru engine.

why would the thumper and blowtorch sound any better than the others? in fact, the blow torch and the wailtail share the same muffler, just a different tip. the thumper has a smaller muffler. And they are all 2.25" inlet piping...

thumper has a different muffler, and a longer tip. i just have a feeling it would sound the best. The blow torch is the same muffler as the wail tail, but a different tip, less of a ricey tip. Each of the mufflers has a different design. Canister (free flow, cylindrical), Oval (multiple chamber), or resistriction (stock muffler).

Not my cup of tea. Though, for the Loyale, if it's cheap...

how does a GC axleback differ from a legacy one? how much work would have to be done to a bolt on GC axleback to get it on a legacy?

I actually got one of these in the mail the day I blew my head gaskets. Now that I'm turboed, I have all 3in stuff, but I'm thinkin of putting the magnaflow on my roommates impreza.

changed the cat on my wagon, the car got louder and lazier and when i floor it the car hits extreme redline before it shifts and my neighbors told me it sounds like the car is misfireing so hopefully the silencer will silent it out and maybe bring the performance back to normal. moral of the story is be carefull because size dosent matter, if you gonna run a big tip, you might as well do a complete change from head down, i was trying to get a close replica to the muffler you have right now actually.

i cant tell you strait up 2.5" is WAY to big my car misses and boggs down if i floor it...it really sucks!

2.25 is pretty good, and my 2 3/8ths piping works great too, even on an eJ22.

2.25 is the way to go. I have 2.25 running through my setup.

I myself would prefer you go with mabye a glass pack before the rear axle. then use any of those mufflers. That'll make it have some serious bark with out the rice.

i'd look a borla pro xs universal muffler. they have good tone, are relatively cheap, and can be had with various inlet/outlet configurations (offset/center, center/center, or offset/offset in addition to single in/single out or single in/dual out)
this will also allow you to pick what tip you want to put on it.

Meh, you haven't heard very many Subarus with any various type of exhaust, have you? If you keep the stock Unequal Length headers, they'll sound nice and deep no matter what. I have yet to hear an exhaust setup (cheap or expensive) that really sounds awful. Except maybe a leaking exhaust...

(edited out all the flamming on mark for the stupid comment)
actually, despite the truth of that. Having an unequal length header doesn't allow it to work against the laws of physics. Its not too hard to make anything sound like crap, if you like cars sounding like a chainsaw, thats your own deal but i will say it sounds like crap.
oh, internet, sound clips. *slap*
OH WAIT! see that! 0wned!~! LOLZZLAWLZDONTGIVEASHIT

I have to agree, I heard some shitty sounding Subarus on NASIOC and on here. Actually I heard a hand full of Subaru's that I like the exhaust note.
Actually I have a glass pack and it sounds just fine....

And then again sound is like appearance, it's a matter of opinion. You guys can argue all day long what sounds better but you won't make much progress.

That's true. Gives my car a decent deepish...semi muscluar tone.
Mark's ignorant statement about both me and Taxi not understanding, or hearing many Subaru mufflers very often is simply henious ,and I take personal offense to his ignorance. We both have done extensive reseach in deciding what muffer I was to choose, much less what he might choose if he bought an Impreza.
Or am I offended?

Sorry, I associated "ricey sounding exhaust" with the typical honda w/ a fartcan noise, which I have never heard from a Subaru with the UEL header design.
I'm actually really interested to know what Jedi Taxi said to me. Flame away.
AJM, you shouldn't be offended by ignorance, and I shouldn't have to apologize for it. Feel free to correct me though, I can take it.
Personally though, judging a muffler by the tip is laughable. Tips can be welded onto anything, including straightpipes.
Meh, I'm happy with my STi muffler

oh, and i did re-edit the post serveral times to take out the flaming. eventually, i just left it at that. without any harsh comments.
Dude, Mark, just chill. I wasn't really that offended. This is the internet, I take nothing seriously.

Technical section = technical posts. Say what your POV is, and leave it. No need for personal comebacks or saying the other person is wrong unless they're trying to be factual about it.
Debate facts all day.
