View Full Version : One Custom 1/4 Mile 1979 Civic

10-13-2007, 10:23 AM
i noticed quite a few took some interest in my civic in another thread i posted. since im really starting to work on it now. i figured id post it here and see what interest it sparked. besides im a car guy, its in my nature to want to show off and brag about a project lol. so ill do a quick quick skip threw starting from day one to current, and then u guys can feel free to ask for more pictures/questions. and ill try and keep this thread pretty updated as i progress on with this very unique project. so no more bs, heres PICTURES!

lets start with the photoshops of the "goal" my ideas are always changing, so dont exspect it to come out looking like this when its done.

first day i got it, unloaded it off teh trailer and this was the first picture taken.

bone stock motor. 1.2L. max hp = 50, top speed = 75 mph. 0 - 60 in about 15 seconds. no joke.

the new double slammer

new motor in, being test fitted, metal cut and bent to make room for pulleys and other parts of the motor. custom engine mounts being fabbed.

part of this project is ditching the metal bumpers and giving it a custom/modern look.

so heres the start of the rear bumper.

start of the front bumper

the new dash

front bumper getting some glass.

that was a very undetailed quick quick catch up to current. so from here on out, ill go into a lot more detail and more pictures. heres current pics.

Bumper is starting to close in on being finished. still a lot of work to do though.

as you can see the side is a little ruff right now... i ran out of resin in the middle of molding so it didnt get enough, so it turned out like crap, and bubbled a little bit since it wasnt saturated enough. ill have to redo it, but it will turn out as well as the middle section did where it was cut.

the other side awaiting glass.

was working on molding the rear side in. it needs a little more sanding and then a few more layers of glass to get rid of all those lines and smooth it out. but its coming around finally. and its white because the "grey" primer i bought was FRIGGIN WHITE! made me mad lol. but oh well no harm done.

so... i have hundreds more pictures, and lots of details. and lots of info on this project, you guys just gotta ask. and ill post up whatever u want.

just an FYI to show how much this project has changed...

ive gone threw 4 Front bumpers before i found the one im using now.
2 dashes
2 rear bumpers
and ive changed a lot of ideas and added a lot of ideas, changed my paint schemes several times and dont countless different photoshops.

this thing is always changing. so on that note....

Discuss

I like it!

Is that an 02-03 Civic dash?

10-13-2007, 07:26 PM

i cant believe you... everyone on this forum should know exactly by heart what that dash is!!!!

10-13-2007, 07:48 PM
Props for reviving a classic.

10-13-2007, 11:48 PM
i cant believe you... everyone on this forum should know exactly by heart what that dash is!!!!

The shape of the HVAC opening looks too trapezoidal to be a BD/BK dash, but it's pretty hard to tell the difference with them gutted (we have an 02 civic).

Actually, looking at it again, it's not a BD/BK unless it's been modified somehow.

Doesn't look like a BC/BJ or a BE/BH either.

So what is it? Impreza?

10-14-2007, 02:11 AM
came out of a 2006 legacy. sorry dont know the chassis code. the passenger side got chopped down a good 6" so it lost the vent. and the driver side got chopped about 1 inch so it lost part of the vent. other wise its just gutted. but it out of a 06 legacy...

by the way. the name of this thread is 1/4 mile civic. and i didnt really talk about the peformance of this car...

basically by summer time when this thing gets finished this car will run a low 12 second quarter mile... on the stock internals motor.

in the mean while ill be building my race block and my final motor. by summer of 2009 i plan on having this car putting out a good 300whp which will put it down in the low 10 second range.

then over the next few yrs to come, i want to break into the 9's and then the 8's making this the fastest 1st gen civic around.

so this car will have a LOT of performance even though right now its only looking like body work.

10-14-2007, 03:49 PM
Crazy project! I'm interested in seeing it finished. Good luck keeping it hooked up at 300+WHP

10-14-2007, 05:55 PM

Power to weight potential is there. And I think it's an awesome project, but getting a FWD drag car to hook up at the line enough to run 8's is going to be quite a challenge.

10-14-2007, 09:33 PM
oh trust me guys i know!! traction is going to suck! ill have some VERY exspensive slicks. traction bars. very tuned suspension, everything i can possibly do.

but ive seen it done in other fwd's, so im not to worried... yet anyway.

10-15-2007, 12:06 AM
06 Legacy? Bah, there's barely any new Legacys around here, and I rarely see them on the forums either here or Nasioc. I wouldn't have guessed that except from hints.

the chassis codes are BL/BP, FYI

10-15-2007, 01:54 AM
you dont see any, and we already see a wrecked one haha.

but your talking about a town that had like the most subaru sales in the US than any other town lol. subarus are BIG in the northwest.

10-16-2007, 05:29 PM
I think when this car is done I will have to take a little road trip to The Dalles and check it out in action. This is going to be awesome!

10-16-2007, 09:08 PM
but your talking about a town that had like the most subaru sales in the US than any other town lol

boulder?

10-16-2007, 10:01 PM
badass build! i demand more pics! as well as expected engine set up.

10-16-2007, 10:48 PM
Props SPR, that's an awesome, original project. Best of luck, and keep us informed!

10-17-2007, 01:20 AM
I think when this car is done I will have to take a little road trip to The Dalles and check it out in action. This is going to be awesome!

hey if theres a drag strip anywhere near boise/nampa (sp?) ill bring the car to you lol. i got family up there id like to go see and it would be fun to trailer that thing up there for some races.

ive been to boulder, i did notice a ton of subys there too haha. but i know our dealership won some sort of award for it. so i think they beat out boulder even. i got friends in boulder too. do you know brad shell? he owned the company sketch up/sketch 3d or whatever it was called, but he just sold out to google.

i dont have any current new pics. but ill post some more older ones after this post and you can browse. im not really digging into the motor work yet since i dont have my parts car i need. so that will come in the next 2 months some time.

10-17-2007, 01:41 AM
heres a pic of the Subaru forester bumper i had on.... but no matter what i did, it would just never come out right...

so this is what came of it HAH

progress picture of the rear bumper

my girl friend also has a 79 that we are redoing for her... i had the bumper for mine before i even had my car haha. so i put it on hers to see how it fit, so this is the only before pic i have of the forester bumper.

this is how tight the motor is. i have to cut and bang and massage the frame to fit around the motor.... dont worry it will get strengthened back up with the rollcage thats coming.

the transmission sticks into the wheel well about 1"

my high quality jack stands... cinder blocks haha.

this was the custom built fiberglass dash i made. its a replica of the factory one jsut much lighter. but now i have the legacy dash so im currently selling it for $200.

and yes my baby will be bottle fed.

i still have more pictures. but its basically just the same stuff from different angels... so thats all im posting for now... i might post some build pics of the original fiberglass dash later if anyone wants to see that progess its quite amazing lol. other wise, you'll have to wait for new pictures!!!

10-17-2007, 09:57 AM
damn cool project. your next one should be a 360..

10-17-2007, 10:10 AM
damn cool project. your next one should be a 360..

Do you want him to die? The 360 was definitely a deathtrap. I'm not really sure how much better the Honda would be though...

10-17-2007, 11:55 AM
haha no i dont want him to die, but it would be super cool

10-17-2007, 12:22 PM
damn cool project. your next one should be a 360..

I built one in Gran tourismo 2. went from 26 hp (?) to ~100 with a stage 3 turbo kit, and was completely undrivable. It might be 'fun' to have, but i'd be to scared to drive one in real life.

10-17-2007, 03:12 PM
lol well im working on 2 projects at the same time right now actually. mostly this one but my 67 camaro is getting a little attention. after this is done, the camaro will get all the work and get finished. but during the camaro project ill have my legacy by then so again ill have 2 projects going at once. and possibly three cus im hoping to get my new truck, so that will need a custom built lift kit, exhaust, lots of motor work (diesel) and then the massive 44" tires and new wheels. so that will drain the pocket book. then in about 2 yrs from now i plain on swapping my gf's 79 civic motor and really starting making that car pretty girlie and ricey haha. so yet another project.

but after ALL of those are done.... the next on my list is a old school mini. then im not sure what. but were talking 10+ yrs down the road from now lol.

my goal in life, is to start a new project ever 5 yrs and have the previous one finished by then. i figure normally i would be spending 350 bucks a month on a car payment for 5 yrs. when thats done i get the car. so why not spend 350 bucks a month into my project car and in 5 yrs have it done. by the time im 50 i should have atleast 6 bad ass cars parked in my driveway. and if i ever come on hard times. i can just stop putting that 350 bucks a month into my car. unlike if u had a carpayment ur screwed. sure they wont be some brand new 2057 cadillac or something, but they will be custom and imo way cooler.

only thing that sucks is by then their probably wont be any gas lol.

10-23-2007, 01:25 AM
well little update. nothing special just a lot of sanding and primering. but either way heres a few pictures.

the rear bumper mostly done.

this is what happens when you use shitty fiberglass mat. it turns out all shitty looking. ill never use this shit again.

same with the front. used that crappy stuff, now i got a lot of sanding work to do.

i know i know i still need to fix that dent.

anyway im out of materials, and got a lot going on right now. so thats it for a little while. enjoy.

10-23-2007, 04:59 AM
Let's get moving on this little shit, I'm curious how it turns out.

10-23-2007, 06:38 AM
send me 500 bucks or a running 1986-89 integra and ill have a first start up followed by a sick first burn out vid posted on youtube in a month

i cant work right now with my court battles... so im strapped for cash, and this project is the last place my money should be going. so it may be a little while before i can put some more money into it. sorry!

10-23-2007, 11:30 PM
uh dude that primer was mine and you knew it was white but lets get going on this again that dude was giving us supplies

10-24-2007, 12:22 AM
looks good so far anyway
nice work & goodluck

10-24-2007, 01:45 AM
chip all he has it a little bit of mat. i still need

sanding disc for the sander
rubber gloves

thats another 100 bucks in supplies.

but that should finish my front and rear bumper and most if not all of the dash. hopefully.

10-24-2007, 10:25 AM
yeah true
but it is $10 bucks less you have to come up with to get done with the front and rear bumpers

10-24-2007, 02:13 PM
yeah true
but it is $10 bucks less you have to come up with to get done with the front and rear bumpers

not really cuz i have a bunch of mat, enough to finish them lol

10-24-2007, 02:20 PM
owe ok well i have not been to the shop in a week or so but yeah

10-26-2007, 11:12 AM
That's a bit different from the '79 I've raced:

10-26-2007, 01:35 PM
Wow. Dart Vader called, he wants his helmet back.

But that is seriously badass.

10-26-2007, 02:21 PM
^^^^ more pics!!!

10-26-2007, 03:39 PM
haha that is a sweeeeet first gen!! heres a couple pics of my 2 favorite first gens out there right now..

with a 03 1.7 vtec motor.

and then have civic number 2. this one has a built '81 1600cc Prelude/Accord motor. and this one is what they call the "trunk model" or seadan, not the hatch back 5 door. so its a little more rare.

and i normally dont like he wagons, but this one is sooo awesome.

so theres ya some sweet pics to drool over for a bit...

but here the update on MY car...

im prob not going to touch it for a long time... 2 weekends from now (not including this weekend) im going to start aother motor swap. the guy i bought my civic from a year ago shoots me an email and ask me if i want to make some money to come swap his 1st gen wagon for him. so how can i turn that down?

so were going to start doing that. once i get his swapped and make some cash, ill start working on mine again. im going to stop wasting my money on body work stuff and fiberglass, i want my motor running asap! so im going to save all that money i get and buy my donor car so i can get my car running and driving.

and yes dont worry, i will post lots and lots of pics of davids motor swap as we progress on it. which will be quite fast actually since money wont be holding us up! he already has all the parts, now we just need time.

10-27-2007, 09:16 AM
The Speednation car is still the original 1200. I know Oscar Jackson did some work on the engine, and the fender flares and bodywork are some rare tomei or domei or something like that.

Seen here with bodywork repairs after Mike let his dumbass mechanic pile it into the side of a hill at a hillclimb:

10-27-2007, 02:10 PM
I like that speednation civic the best.

10-28-2007, 07:58 PM
those r some super sexy civics!!!

11-01-2007, 11:23 PM
I like that speednation civic the best.

to bad its the slowest civic posted in this forum lmao. (besides mine that doesnt run haha)

anyway little small update. ive started to tear down motor #1 to build it. so heres the before. ill get better pictures later

11-02-2007, 08:59 AM
well heres the finished progress of the tear down... ill send the block and head off to the machine shop prob sometime next week to get it magged and cleaned.

This is the New Zero-Cam JDM Motor. Straight From japan its at least 500 hp to the wheels. oh yeah.

when i bought this motor the guy told me it ran perfect. he rolled his car and parted it out. i pull the head off and i find chunks of dirt and debree in there. wtf....

and this really topped it off... a FRIGGIN LEAF!! wtf! how does a unburnt leaf make it into the cylinder....

bottom end taken off, pistons and rods removed. just got the crank, flywheel, and pully left!

everything stripped down. block is ready for the machine shop!

should be shinny compared to this when it comes back! stay tuned.

11-02-2007, 09:23 AM
wow, I'm pretty sure this is the 2nd coolest honda I've ever seen. Awesome build!

*edit...i'm retarded

11-02-2007, 09:29 AM
wow, I'm pretty sure this is the coolest 2nd coolest honda I've ever seen. Awesome build.

that didnt make much since too me haha, but imma take it as a compliment since u used the word cool. lol so thanks!

11-02-2007, 10:40 AM
yeah...I'm dumb, too many exhaust fumes inhaled from my un-tuned rich as hell running car.

11-02-2007, 12:29 PM
awesome build! i wish people still drove small cars like these.. be so much cooler! and about that leaf.. im teling you man, its the friggin squirrels!

11-02-2007, 04:43 PM
awesome build! i wish people still drove small cars like these.. be so much cooler! and about that leaf.. im teling you man, its the friggin squirrels!

haha well i figured out what it is!! my friend figured it out

"dude no that is no leaf that is a cylinder head resignator it came in the jdm models of your block it rattles around in the head and gives it like a extra 2maybe 3 hundred horsepower and it helps maintain healthy valves and protects the top of your pistons

LMAO. he's a crack up.

i think maybe this weekend my friend and i are going down to buy a 75 wagon, and the guy also has a 77 trunk model i REALLY want too if its in good shape. so we will see, might have a couple more coming soon!

11-06-2007, 12:35 AM
well some very good news i just had to share.... snagged a new part tonight.... prob the biggest part of this build :)

a TD05 turbo from a late 90's early 00's jdm impreza!! it boosted those cars to well over 350 hp... i think i will be perfect for the civic :)

best part of alll.... price was FREE

11-06-2007, 08:24 AM
SWEET. That thing will be a monster when finished.

11-06-2007, 07:41 PM
SWEET. That thing will be a monster when finished.

thats the goal! and nothing less!

got my head cleaned up today. gotta love the new clean look!

01-02-2008, 07:35 PM
wow long time no update here. maybe i should catch you guys up lol.

first off, i decided against the subaru turbo after all. there was a chance it was puking oil, so i figured it was just better to snag a new t3/t4 turbo. so that will be coming soon.

2nd, i changed my mind on my body work, decided i didnt want the custom/new age look. gonna keep it a little more stock, little cleaner, more "JDM". just a sporty clean tuner. so just as i finished my rear bumper, and damn near had the front finished, i ripped it all off!!! im going to fill in the hole in the rear, kinda like a roll pan. and on the front im going to build it from scratch. kinda the same effect a roll pan. make it smooth, no bumper at all. but im going to fabricate my intercooler into it. hopefully when its done, it will sorta look like another grill, like its suppose to be there.

This is a car i found on another forum. he has a VERY similar front end to what im talking about. but mine will flow with the cars natual body lines a little better, look a little cleaner, and of course have a gleaming front mount in it!!!

Here is a incredibly shitty photoshop of it.

again, really CRAPPY photoshop.

So onto the next thing.
someone needed the stock springs, so how could i resist. took em out and slammed it on the struts! ahahaha.

Even at full turn, the wheels still didnt rub!! lol thank god for skinny tires haha.

BUT, it cant drive on struts only for ever... so i pick me up a set of coil springs tonight.

they are only temporary, just so i can actaully drive the car around, play around with it, have a little fun. when i can afford my set of 1200$ adjustable coil overs i will switch over, and sell these to another 1st genist so they can slam their ride if they would like.

i ordered them tonight, hopefully they should be here in about a week, and installed shortly after that.

then im going to start the mold for my front end, and get that going.
but i cant do that untill i pick up a new set of head light bezels. which im working on tracking down a set right now.. so time will tell, and ill keep ya guys updated.

01-03-2008, 11:01 AM
I dig the more 'utilitarian' style front and rear bumpers, like the example pic shows. Though the custom work you did was veeery nice. Are you going to leave exposed rivets like the example pic too?

It's very 80's Group-B Rally-esque, and I like it a LOT.

01-03-2008, 07:25 PM
naa im going to keep it all shaved smooth. but i got bored, so i decided im going to start working on the front end even though i dont have everything i need right now. i built a "front mount intercooler" out of cardboard so i can see where its going to sit and how to shape/mold it the bumper to it. and that way i dont fuck up my fancy real front mount in the molding process. because it will be messy!!

so i started with taking some boxes and cutting/taping them to actual size of the front mount i plan on getting. heres my new front mount :)

27"x5.5"x2.5" should do nicely.

doesnt even come close to the cross member. theres tons of room. which room was the main concern.

i need to cut this little bastard off so it can sit foward a little more where i want it.

sorta where it will sit.

anyway i didnt get very far today at all, i got my front mount template made, and test fitted it to make sure that size of intercooler would work for me, then i had to run out to ship parts and do some errands. so maybe tomorrow ill start working on the mold.... at least i want too. we will see how busy i get. i gotta buy some new head lamp bezels though because i lost mine, and they are part of the grill/mold, so i can do much untill i get those.

more pics later.

01-04-2008, 09:30 PM
well heres the progress pics from the starting of the new front end.

Before... also the final resting place of the front mount.

Filled it up with foam, waiting for it to expand and dry...
also painted my "front mount" silver for a more realistic looking template HAHA. sorry i get really board some times. gotta love 20 year old cans of spray paint i find laying around!

im a fucking idiot and forgot to shake the can.... so it came out all stringy and didnt expand very well....

After shaking the can a little more..... worked a little better.

so after basically wasting 1 hole can of foam, this was the results. (yes i primered it because i was extremely bored haha.

From the back side.

So since i messed up the first can, it wasnt enough, so i had to run back to home depot and buy another freaking can. i shook it the entire way back to the shop. and started spraying more foam. it came out sooooo much thicker and fluffyier, like 4 times the size than before. i felt like a idiot.....

haha. but i didnt get pictures of the second stage of foam, i put it on and ran out the door for home. so ill let it dry over night, and tomorrow when i go back to the shop it will be all nice and hard and ill get pics and start sanding and shaping!!

and sorry for the crappy pictures. i brought my nice camera but left the memory card at home. so i had to use my camera phone... intelligence was just not with me today lol.
