how often does the fuel filter need to be changed? Is there a sticky on how to do it?

For all your "how often does it need to be done" type questions, Subaru has MAINTENANCE SCHEDULES (http://www.subaru.com/owners/schedules/index.jsp?from=topNav) online.

As far as how to change, I'm sure it varies some, but all the ones I've done on Subaru vehicles have been mounted on the driver's side strut tower. There's two lines, held on with hose clamps. Even after loosening the clamps, the lines are often tightly stuck to the filter. I wrap a rag around the lines, then use a pair of pliers to first twist to break them loose, then pull the lines off the filter. Then, once both lines are removed, there's just a bracket holding the filter in place, it has a lever or something you flip (pretty obvious) to release the filter. Put the new one in place, hook up the lines and tighten the clamps. Then I cycle the key on for a couple seconds, then off, and on again a few times to prime the new filter. Then check for leaks, and fire it up.

"Officially" the lines are under pressure, and you should do something to relieve the pressure before changing the filter, like removing the fuel pump fuse with the car running and allowing it to run until it stalls out, but I've never found it necessary personally. Your call. Definately wear safety glasses, and (duh) remember that you're working with highly flammable fuel. No smoking, etc. :grin:

How often do you have to change them? Maybe once every 100k miles. Fuel's pretty clean these days - the filters don't do much.

100k? that seems like a long time to change it. does anyone else agree?

I gave you the link to be able to check for yourself. Subaru says every 30K miles for your year. (and some others, I didn't check them all) I wouldn't wait until anywhere near 100K.

I would say around 60k, but I did it every few oil changes on the Legacy.

according to the Goodyear I worked at every 12000 miles or 1 year.

but thats a corperation...if you know what i meen
