When I accelerate, up in the upper RPM's (3kish and above), my car sounds like a referee w/ asthma, a loud ass whistle.

I put the stock setup back in, I've tried a homemade intake, just a cone at the end of the filter box and the box empty, no cone and just a filter in the box, all the options with stock filter and with k&n, I can't really figure it out.

Anyone else with this problem?

usually whistling is caused by the roofracks, mirrors, or the drainage hole on the muffler.

my car whistles whenever i punch it.
it was discussed before http://www.sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?t=2929
some people refer to it as a "phantom turbo"
i don't think it's anything to worry about. mine has been whistling for over 2 years and i don't have any problems.

Phantom turbo lol thats great.

So is this noise coming from under the hood? You are assuming it's the intake system? Maybe some sort of vacuum leak?

I'm guessing vacuum leak.

Mine whistles in fifth gear, remarkably like a turbo sound around 70 mph. But, that's from the gearbox, dunno about the phantom turbo sound...

That's funny, it does sound like a turbo with no blow off.

I'll have to check all the hoses and what not again.

I'm going to vote for the throttle body causing the whistle, my jeep and a friend's honda did the same thing.

Makes sense.

I tightened the bahjesus out of the hose clamp that holds the airbox to it, still does it. I'm saving $ for a swap so i can deal with it for a while.

It is the "phantom turbo". My legacy did it, my baja does it a little bit...thought that actually has a turbo. A K+N filter made it really, REALLY pronounced.

My wife's Outback has the same whistle, and so did my Leg - a SPT axel back made the whistle go away. I seems to be a very common afliction with the BE/BH.

I know that its not a subaru but one of my friends car was whistling and it turned out something was wrong with a valve, i dont remember what it was but it had to do with his valves. Anyone ever checked that?
