View Full Version : Soooo I'm tired of the Legacy already...

I like everything about my car, the handling, looks, gas mileage etc. But..it just doesn't have that "umph" I need when getting on the highway. I'm thinking of trading it in on an 05-06LGT because my insurance is actually dropping down to $91/month when I hit the big 2-1 in a few months. I pretty much have no other problem with the car other than that, but with school still going on I'm not sure if I'm ready to take the next step in purchasing a more expensive vehicle. Any input???

Theres nothing wrong with upgrading. If it's something you can afford and live comfortably go for it.

I've been having the same debate a few times a week with myself. The problem is, your power ambitions will not stop there. Then you going to want a bigger turbo, tuning, more mods. All these mods are going to cost more since the car is newer and the aftermarket has to catch up + the price of the car. Then your going to start speeding/racing and pile on the tickets (don't say you won't, your not getting a turbo to go the speed limit). I didn't get one to save me from myself.:smt028

...personally theres also the fact that once a week some strangers come up to me and tell me my car is really unique....and you know what, I owe it to the general public to keep it that way.

Yea, just look at me. Within a month of saying "not modding until next year":
-Debadged
-De-pinstriped
-New front floormats
-Momo Shift knob
-STi Front seats
-2007 WRX Front brakes (on order)

I kept my same legacy for my entire college career--having no payments is great when you have little or no income. I'm glad I waited, I got exactly the car I wanted, and had time to appreciate the old car vs. the new.

its a phase we all go through lol just think about not making payments for you car and blowing your money on fun stuff to making car payments each month minimizing your disposal money.

I went from an 06 Eclipse GT to a slow as hell 4cyl n/a brick. I must say, other than the fact that the thing can't accelerate for shit (in comparison to a 6cyl 6spd), it was worth the move. Saves me on insurance, people revving me at stoplights, and the extra $$$ on modding.

Reason

I can go get a brand new car but I don't want the payments right now. If I can't buy a car cash right now I'm not getting it. The idea of having a new car is great, the reality of car payments and insurance sucks.

You've all made some good and interesting points, thank you. As for payments, I'm already spending a good amount on my car (I pay about $50 more than asked so the principal balance goes down more every month). As far as modding, I think I'd be happy with it stock for a while, I have pretty good control of my money

Silent, I like your point especially, I always get compliments on my car and how clean I keep it, thats one of the reasons I got it in the first place; originality is key for me.

I'm not upset at the acceleration of the car so much as the sloppiness of a car with a lot of original parts at 193,000 miles. I need to pump up the tires. I think a lot of the reason the new tires feel so crappy is because they're at 5 psi less than the tires that were taken off. But the shifter is sloppy, the struts are shot, the steering rack bushings are tired, the engine is ticking (just the HLA's but annoying nonetheless) and oil is leaking all over.

I wouldn't mind an 09 STi right about now

Hell, even a 2.5i would be really nice!

I like everything about my car [....] gas mileage etc.

The one thing I don't like about my legacy is the gas mileage. I'm lucky to get 27mpg on the highway and avg around 19-21 in the city. It's not bad but yeah for the lack of umph it should seem like it should get more.

I don't have payments though so it works out for me to keep it. If I had to make payments on a car I would have gone with a Yaris or something while in college. The chicks dig it's pug dog looks.

Exactly, I would expect mileage closer to that of a honda with how un-powerful it is. And with the GT, it's only a few miles off of what I get now...

Three words -

All wheel drive.

If you expect it to be like a Honda, then add a good 600lbs to the Honda (BEs are Heavy!) and another 10% drivetrain loss and you'll probably get less mileage on the Honda too...

I drove an 03 Civic the other day, it rattled far worse than my 98. Way more sound deadening in the BE's.

The Accords though are a different beast entirely. The 07 Accord I'm driving right now (I4, manual, 4 door) has so much pickup from 2nd gear it's almost like it's boosted. It'd spank an NA Legacy all day long. Cornering isn't bad either, of course it understeers like a novice iceskater. But the interior...very nice.

I shocked my family the other day - I said my next car might just be an Accord.

Way more sound deadening in the BE's.

I find it hard to believe that you can add 300lbs of sound deadening. The Average BE is about 300-400 lbs heavier than the average BD. It's just a heavy car. Heavy sheetmetal, heavy seats, huge ass moonroof, etc etc

subba

Legacy Interior Semi bucket seats - mid Quality dash and door inserts = Lots o weight.

My uncle had a 02 civic sedan which we practically rebuilt after the hurricane, the 2 front seats in the thing weighed less than my driverseat, the dash is pretty much plastic, and the body seemed like aluminium(i felt like i broke the truck lid when i closed it), i drove it for about a 100 meters and i was suprised at the reaction and how quick it accelerates from 0... but after 30mph the thing creeps compared to my legacy.

Not a rant to insult hondas but what i am trying to get at is that if you compre a subaru to most hondas weight wise, its no competition who is lighter. Lighter cars get better milage, not to mention engine size.

My BE was a heavy one, and I had no sound absorbent material, no moon roof, and not much sheet metal left when I ditched it (it had mostly rusted away from missing paint). It still weighed a freaking ton.

true H6 have a little bit more appetite but i cant complain about it being slow or fat. my average 18mpg 60c/40h, the best i've seen so far was 26.8 and i know it could be better cause i had close to 300lbs worth of liquior and some minor camping gear. the worst i've seen was 14.7 100% city with snow. my old BD was the same way best was 27.6 on my trip to florida. if they had a 5mt H6 highway mpg would be closer to 30.

I was giving my opinion about a similarly sized/weighted car vs. the BE Legacy. What are you doing?

Sarra
10-30-2007, 01:17 AM
There's more to performance than power, weight, and drivetrain loss. There's power curves, gearing, aerodynamics, traction, etc.

My Legacy can take most vehicles off the line, but at around 50, I start losing out.

subba
10-30-2007, 02:33 PM
i think my old wagon had some performance stuff in it, because when i press it, it went past 134 kmph and still pulling (Ran out of road) but this one i have now seems retarded it stops pulling at about 110kmph.

But i seriously cant see a v6 Accord being faster than a SK2, might have more horsepower and engine size but Front wheel drive is a big loss. gotTRACTION?

deadlydave
10-30-2007, 04:26 PM
you have to rev the crap out of a small-displacement engine to get decent power, and the new accord's v6 is gonna put down some big grunt.

however, i still can't see it being faster than the S2k.

And BE-Fresh, to stay on topic, do you still like your car?

I guess when it starts snowing I might like it a little more haha. Honestly, if it weren't for insurance I would have gotten the 2.5GT right off the bat. But now that I'm a lil older and wiser (haha....) I think I can handle having a semi quick car and keeping the mods to a minimum. I had plans on keeping this till it died and swaping in my buddie's WRX engine/drivetrain cause he treats it like a newborn baby. But I'd rather not go through the hassle of the actual process of swapping everying, although I'd love it's uniqueness.

BE-Fresh, I'm going to highly advise you stick with what you have, at least until you finish school. I hate the idea that I traded my car for the dodge I own now. I wish I had kept the Legacy. At the time, I was also tired of the car and it needed quite a few repairs. Looking at it now, I could've put a rebuilt motor in it, built a turbo kit, and done all the repairs I needed and then some with what I have put into this truck so far (just over 4 grand). Now, I'm stuck with the truck because demand for these things has dropped so far so quick, I'm 2k in the hole on it still. "Upgrading" isn't all it's cracked up to be. I'd be much better off without the payment and extra insurance, and I'm working a decent paying, full time job with plenty of overtime. If the legacy is paid off, keep it. If not, definitely don't take on anything more expensive and take the insurance savings as a blessing.

BE-Fresh

You've got a good point. I'm definatly keeping it till next year, just not sure when. And I just hit 70K a few days ago so it would kinda be pointless to trade it in since I won't get that much for it anyway. Plus I still owe a good amount on it as well.
