View Full Version : Power output for JDM vs. USDM EJ20?...

Just a question, what are the differences that allow the JDM EJ20 to make 276hp, where the USDM EJ20 will only make 226hp? I have always wondered why. :-?

If I understand correctly, the JDM EJ20 does not have the EGR valve (I think that is what it is called). In addition to that I believe that they also use 100 oct. gas. Running the 100 oct would allow for more boost.

I don't know, but I thought that I would ask just to find out........ like I said, always wondered why the JDM guys get roughly 20% more power.

One turbo vs 2? I'm not familiar with the EJ20 (I DO understand the point of a twin set up). And all JDM parts are sprinkled with a magical dust that makes them much better than USDM parts, it's a proven fact.

I understand the JDM dust factor. When I got both the headlights and the taillights they were very dusty! lol

I think that the EJ20 that was twin turbo (legacy equivilent) was to have the engine under boost rapidly, hense a small, fast spooling initail turbo, for instant boost when needed. The second larger turbo was not spooled till around 4500 RPM. Note that there was a flat spot, if not even a reduction in power when this happened.

I was interested in the EJ20 in the JDM WRX, or the single turbo JDM EJ20. Again just interested.....

Exactly I notice when a lot of JDM twin turbo engines( not just Subaru) come state side most people toss on huge turbos.

If you're talking stock/stock, then its mostly because the way the JDM cars are tuned - 100RON octane is STANDARD in Japan. Every car there runs on the stuff. They are optimized for that, but some (like the NA cars) will operate on 91RON (which is the equiv. of 87octane USA).

Subaru's techs have always lagged behind in being able to generate more power from a good tune - unlike Mitsubishi who has managed each year to stay with the STi and still uses a 2.0l engine... course they use a massive turbo...

I thought the JDM WRX engines (ej20t) had only one turbo just like the USDM ones.. and then there is also the twin turbo setup? How hard is it to get parts for the JDM wrx engines? I noticed the JDM ones are a lot cheaper than USDM engines.. and seems to be all you can find on ebay.

Theres no such thing as an EJ20T

that is correct

I do believe the jdm models do not have EGR but that will do little in the power department anyways. Also some jdm wrx motors came with avcs on the intake cam

What do you mean by this? u mean.. just for the JDM engines.. or in general.. there is no ej20t? I'm confused!? :-?

EJ20T is just slang, read this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_EJ_engine#EJ20

Werd.. thanks for the info.. did not know. Just assumed it was always called EJ20T.. seems like everyone calls it that. But.. does the JDM 2.0s have 2 versions.. aka 1 turbo and twin turbo.. and the USDM only have 1 turbo versions?

JDM 2 liter blocks are a bunch tougher than the USDM blocks. USDM motors would never make as much power in a 2 liter block due to emissions restrictions.

As for the gasoline rating, not gonna touch that.

Only the Legacy was offered with a TT, AFAIK.

JDM engines are cheaper, but they typically have been abused more than USDM engines. There are weird taxes and such in JDM-ville regarding cars...
