View Full Version : Lightweight Crank Pulley, or Pitch Stop Mount?

Hey guys, So I'm getting to the point where I'd really like to get rid of the bucking when laying on or off the throttle, both from a stop and while driving. I've searched a bit but haven't turned up anything of real value. Which upgraded component would help me the most in terms of easing the engine motion? I figure the less weight of a new crank pulley would help with throttle response and "flow" a little better when on or off the gas. And I know the solid pitch stop mount would add a little cabin noise, but hold the engine in place more. So without upgrading the engine mounts....which of the two would you recommend?

If your engine is doing a funky dance and you have crappy throttle responce, you probably should look at upgrading your motor mounts. STi FTW!
I'd recommend motor mounts and a lightweight crank pulley.

I recommend going balls out and Doing the STi mounts, pitch stop rod and a crank for foun. I'm thinking you have a bad mount somewhere.

With the lightweight crank pulley I noticed you could let off the throttle in first gear at like 4000 rpm, just cold turkey and the car wouldn't jerk at all. Can't do that with the stock pulley. So it'll help. I'm not exactly sure what's jerking around in your car though.

The bucking I'm referring to is the normal kind, usually in first or second gear when easing off the gas (like in stop and go traffic). I'm thinking the crank pulley would help because the less rotational mass would help it spin down faster. But you guys are right, I'd probably be better off getting everything (upgraded engine mounts, pulley, and pitch stop) and I'm leaning toward crank pulley as the first one because it'd probably help the jerking, and like Reason said, make it a bit more fun  How much do Group N mounts or STI mounts usually run?

You dont want STi mounts, they are basically the same as what you've got.
You'll need to get Group N stuff.

Group N = STi. Group N refers to the rally class that a stock STi would compete in.

Yes sir, that's what I have :-)

Lightweight pulley is going to be my next mod, then.

I happen to have 2 crank pulleys in my possession ;-)

If you don't like that bucking sensation in 1st and 2nd...hmm I don't know what to say because I got both Group N engine mounts and Lightened flywheel (even more mass taken off at the crank than a pulley) and it makes that phenomena much more abrupt.
I don't know whether it's the fault of the stiffer mount or the reduced rotational inertia, but yeah it's there. I think both parts contribute to the problem (with the lighter flywheel, you have less rotational inertia that works to drag the engine's revs as you let off the gas pedal abruptly...throttle response is a two-way street in this case, and the stiffer mount just transfers more of the engine movement throughout the car body so you just feel it more).
Basically the throttle response and quicker revs comes at a price and you have to be more judicious with the gaspedal to drive a car with these kind of parts smoothly.

I'm a college drop out, it's not that bad, I do alright ;-)

Cone Eater eh?....interesting that those things actually increase the bucking, I guess if I want less bucking I should get an automatic. Such is life I suppose. I guess I'll just get a lightweight crank pulley for the fun then, and maybe a pitch stop and mounts later on. I always thought the bucking was the engine moving around from weak mounts and heavy rotational masses that are stopping and going. But if the engine is damn secure with better mounts and the weight taken away from the rotations, it gets worse? Is there anyway to get rid of it?
Uh, sorry for the thinking out loud paragraph, I'm a little out of it.

I only driven 1 manual Legacy and it had no such bucking at all. But it did have a pitch stop in it lol

Well, if you think about it, stiffer mounts (I have a Group N pitchstop too btw) basically give a more direct link from the engine to the chassis, so anything the engine's doing will be more immediately transferred to the car and your butt will feel it. I don't know, you just have to be more judicious with the gas pedal that's all, even on a stock car. I can induce the bucking thing now only when I want to - I guess I just learned to adapt to driving the car after the change (just like how I found it almost impossible to get the car rolling with the stage 1 clutch and lighter flywheel...now I can do it like it's 2nd nature).
If I have nothing better to do this weekend, I'll make a quick video to show it

Odd question, would a lighter flywheel, lighter crank, or stiffer engine mounts + pitch stop increase or decrease the bogging at low RPM and open throttle?
God, mine bogged on me so bad, I left the go pedal on the floor and stomped the clutch, and the car fucking died on me! I put it in fifth and popped the clutch to get it started again. =\
