Well in the next few days i need to take my timing off and i need a few pointers? Can someone just lay out the DO's and DONT's about taking my timing belt off. FYI Im doing this to do my head gaskets. Pretty much i know i cant let them move a certain direction, but does this mean i cant let them move at all. What do i do so i dont total my engine? Also do i need any special tools to take the cams off?

you can let them move, just don't force them when you're trying to line them up again. if you line them up before you take it off you won;t have anything to worry about. though if you're taking the heads off you won;t have anything to worry about anyway. it;s when you're putting it back on that you need to be careful.

Is there any special tools i will need while disassembling the timing? In the FSM is says something about a Crank Lock or something and a ST Crank wrench. Are these things a must or can i do it without? Thanks -Nick

nope, no special tools needed. an impact gun (if the radiation is out) or a strategically placed breaker bar is handy for taking off the crank bolt. and on DOHC cars a pair of cam gear locks is helpful for keeping the cam gears aligned while putting the new belt on, but not necessary

You really cant, unless theres a way that i've not know of.
but line up the marks where the plastic piece is, and along with your timing belt. it should have a white solid line on the belt.

So i get how to line everything up and i looked at it today and found all the marks. The only thing is do i have to keep turning the crank to line up the white marks with the ones on my belt. Is it ok to crank it as many times as it takes? Can i hurt anything, and also if im taking my timing off to do my heads, I still have to line the marks up with the belt correct?

if you're taking the heads off don't worry about lining anything up now, just take the heads off... nothing needs to be lined up until you put it back together.... doing all that stuff while the engine's out of the car is way easier anyway, dunno if you're at that point yet.

well ive just been taking it slow bcause my gaskets and torque wrench are not here yet. So i think they should be in by mon or tue and im staying up for as long as it takes me to put it all on. So your saying if im doing my heads, just line the marks on the cam gears to the block lines and worry about my belt lines when i put it all back together?

you don't have to line anything up when you're taking it apart, just take the heads off
