View Full Version : LOOKING FOR FOGLIGHT IDEAS! (Legal ones only, please)

Hey all,
My one foglight burned out, so I wanted to buy another set. HOWEVER, since I already see some people are reppin' the yellow foglight mod, I wanted to ask my Pennsylvania Subaru people if this is legal or not.
How easy is it to do? Do I simply need to buy a certain kind of light for my car?
Thanks for your time.

I can't see how yellow fogs would be illegal. They come stock on some high end luxury cars.

The GT foglights on my car are not Outback-sized, but I was concerned about legality because they can light up (even though they are not as strong as projector foglights/headlights).

You'd be best to check with your local BMV or police on the legality - however commonsense says that amber or yellow lights up front are not illegal.

There's nothing I can find in the PA Inspection manual that makes mention of color restrictions on fog lights. I'm running yellow fogs on my Outback.
The PA vehicle inspection manual is available HERE (http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/inspections/pub_45.shtml) on PennDot's website.
The only restrictions I could find relating to fog lights are that they can't operate with the High beams, or independant of the headlights, there have to be at least 20 inches apart, no more than like 40 inches off the ground, and need to be aimed decently. You're also only allowed 1 pair of auxillary driving or fog lights. No mention of color, though.

well yellow light breaks fog better and blind other less, give uniqie look to your car and a cheap mod that adds resale value to your car as well. i see no reason to depise them.

but yea u either have 2 options get yellow bulbs, or buy transparent yellow spray paint like kylon stained glass paint, personally on a black car, id go with the paint, cause i think the yellow look even with them off would be cool.

I find it really easy to see where my light is getting thrown with yellow lights. Silverstars suck in my opinion for exactly the opposite reason. They are too white and you start to lose what's lit up because of glare. Especially in snow.
The yellowstar bulbs aren't that bright. Just go to michaels craft store and get some krylon stained glass paint. Takes about 4-5 coats to the point the yellow is starting to get dark. If you put on too little paint the light will shine through white still. Just remember, general painting rules apply. Light coats at first and then the last two coats can be wet (heavy) coats.
FWIW, I didn't put any clear coat on, and my fog lights are still chip free after 2 months. Now my wheels though  pressure washer took a small chunk out of my wheel paint...
I'll get a pic here... Be back soon.

I didn't do any photo editing to help the colors, but basically the lights are actually darker than that. The whole car is darker.

1) PWT, your wagon owns. Good looking ride!
2) If it's that simple, I'll probably pick up a can sometime this week. I like more visibilty. PA law doesn't say you can't have yellow fogs... I wonder why anyone would fail someone who has them for inspection?

I like the beam pattern of the yellow lights, I just think it's a little over the top by literally covering your foglight in yellow to show everyone you have yellow lights even when they're turned off...

It's more the fact that yellow fog bulbs are hard to find. So now if a bulb burns out it doesn't matter what I throw in there.
Wow, my driveway looks like a freaking forest haha.
