Auto dimming rear view mirror dead?

Just bought an '01 Legacy Outback Limited sedan. Has the auto dimming rear view mirror. I think it is dead. About 3/4 of it from the bottom up is a gold/amber color. Has anyone messed with these things at all. I can imagine that the factory replacement is big bucks from the dealer. It doesn't make any difference if I turn it on or off. The little green light comes on when I turn it on but I get nothing on the mirror.

Called the dealer and checked on the replacement. $160 will get a new one. I'll have to get another $100 Subaru Bucks and I'll just pick up a new one...

What years will work in the 2001 L wagon? Mine went dead last month with one patch of green left. Any fixes for this?

Just found this earlier today. I would think it would work for you, except you probably wouldn't need the whole nine yards, just the mirror.
