exhaust install complete. (update-pics)

Went under the car today to confirm the oil leaking onto the header and took a picture of the new exhaust system while i was at it...

that nasty residue on the bottom of the header is the oil that leaks down. looks like ill be openin up the front cover to see if my timing belt is soaked in oil and get an idea where its comin from. i called subaru today n they told me that to replace the TB and reseal the oil pump, which is probably where its leaking from, itll be 650. +120 for cam seals. ridiculous.

If you have an extra set of hands, taking it all off/on at once works well. You should have some extra bolts in case you break some if your worried about deadlines. This is a very simple install, and should take more than an hr, if that.

Oh yea.. and if your car has rusty bolts or nuts.. a pipe wrench and some PB blaster will be your best friends! Pipe wrench is good for holding those nuts still that will get rounded if they are rusty! Worked great for me! Good luck!

Use some silicon spray on the rubber hangers, it'll come off easily.

I get all new stainless steel bolts and nuts, and new exhaust gaskets.

If you build the system off the car, don't do it all up until it's hung back on the car. Leave the connecting bolts somewhat loose, but snug. When it's up, tighten it all down.

I actually like leaving the whole system on the car and breaking the nuts/bolts off while it's all hooked up - it gives me better leverage.

You can also use 'liquid gasket' type stuff instead of buying overpriced subaru gaskets as well.. just get some high temp stuff in the squeeze bottle.

Don't snap or strip any header bolts :wink:

Two people would be best. Don't tighten anything till it's all up. You will have to line things up and tighten each piece.

done. new exhaust is on (and i put in my kartboy bushings) :grin:
the only advice i didnt follow was reason's: i stripped a header bolt trying to get the nut off. so ill need to figure a fix for that, shouldnt be too tough.

i fired her up for a minute and it sounded like a v8 camaro, haha. much more boxer rumble, but it doesnt seem annoyingly loud. of course i havent driven it yet cuz of my cv joint...

Doing it once, and not romping on it too hard won't make a huge difference. :p Well, unless you do it at like 2 am...

lol! So true. I learned not to work on my car late at night after I had replaced the steering wheel stalks on my old car, put the steering wheel back on and didn't realize I had somehow bridged the horn sensor!! This was at 3am, in my garage with my wife and baby asleep. oops. :lol:

for the headers, well on my car some came out as studs with the nuts still on them and others just as nuts with the studs still in the heads. nothing really important its just one of those things that gets me thinking "is that right?"

so my dad has been drivin the suby while im at school n he says he noticed a bad smell whenever he got outta the car ... and this is whats causing it:

with the new headers ... which go around the oil pan, the oil drips right onto the hot header, causing a horrible smell...

any suggestions other than pay $600 to get new gaskets put in?

Where do you all go to spend $600 on gaskets? I did 6 gaskets on the front of my motor for a little over $200.

Only if your dad is a REAL car guy would i trust him on that. I personally think it's just that he smells the exhaust letting more gasses out than stock and blames a little oil residue for it.

But if you want to fix what is very unlikely to be a problem, change the front main seal, whle your at it, clean up the mess. after that, change the oil pan seal, clean up the messy oil pan. personally, The only real problem i see is the FRAM filter.

Looks like where my first LGT was leaking from.. front main seal. Cost me $600 to get it replaced.. and that was finding someone CHEAP to do it. $400 from the subaru dealership to do all of that and a water pump.. damn, i need to find your subaru dealership! :lol:

yeah my dad happens to be a REAL car guy and i just saw it this morning. i know burnt oil when i smell it and the new header is right underneath that leak. lol and again... what is wrong with Fram filters. ive been usin em for a while now and im quite happy. where is this huge difference between oil filters that would make it such a big 'problem' to have one? please, enlighten me. :lol:

as far as the leaking oil is concerned... i know there is a crank seal (or the oil pump seal), cam seals, and a front main seal?? what are all the ones id have to get replaced? i had my rear seal replaced a short while ago when changing the clutch

Not the water pump.

I bought cam seals, crank seals, timing belt, accessory belts, oil, filter, spark plugs online and brought it to Subaru. They charged around $300-$400 to do the service, it was a few years ago and I can't find the service slip.
