A lady down the street has a 98 LGT. I don't know the mileage but it over-heats with the a/c on, if she turns it off the heat comes down. The found some oil in her coolant. The shop she took it to is telling her the block is cracked. I find this hard to believe. I am leaning toward the head gasket.
I told her I would ask you guys? What ya'll diagnoses?

i don't think it would be the head gasket...

try checking to see if the fans are coming on at all first off...then if they are, are they running in the right direction? if all that seems to be fine, then it might be a shop overfilled the coolant tank and that's making it overheat....

can it run hard, like pulling a hill, and not overheat without the a/c on?

I would lean away from a cracked block as well. Have her get another opinion at another shop, I cant think of anything off the top of my head that would connect with the A/c like that, other than what belladonna said, a load on the engine.

oops...i totally read over the part where you said they found oil in the coolant

so therefore, i concur with the blown head gasket...sorry about that

Thanks for the input. She is moving to California and is thinking about unloading it cheap. Might be a good deal for someone who know how to fix the problem. I'll keep you guys posted If the price seems fair. Other than this problem its a sweet black lgt limited.

Hey Bella good to hear from you, you've been on the downlown lately.

The 98's blow the factory installed head gaskets for some reason... Everyone I know that owns a 98 has had to replace the factory installed head gaskets, after that they seem to be fine... I have seen it happen anywhere from 25K mi. to 125K mi. But I would have to say that this is the problem. All of the 2.5's from 98 too, one guy I know had that happen on his Forester.

Hope this helps,

Mark should learn from you

The only thing I can add is to check the obvious (since I had overheating issues with my truck, and I changed TONs of stuff out), so make sure she has enough fluid.

Can you verify the oil/coolant thing? The shop could be tricky. A new engine installed is some good bank for a shop.
