CV joint is gone... (pics)

Well i put the car up on jackstands to install my new exhaust today and here is what i found on my front left wheel:

First off, what do you guys suggest i do? i dont have access to a lift, so if this is not something i cant do on jackstands outside, ill have to take it to a shop... has this happened to anyone, any advice? thanks.

If it's not cliking you can get away with putting an axel boot. I can do it for you. Let me know?

I did one on jackstands this spring. It's not too rough. Undo the strut bolts and axle nut, pull the axle out of the hub, then remove the roll pin and pull the axle off the transmission.

Yup, doable on jackstands (did it on the rally car) It's just messy as hell. That grease gets EVERYWHERE!!!! Sometimes it's almost easier to buy the whole halfshaft and replace it as one piece.

^ no, we did both my axles last spring and it didnt require any special tools, just a pain in the ass job. but anyway if its not clicking and u wana do a quick fix that will last u atleast a while longer, you could buy a split boot kit. basicly u just cut off the old boot, clean of all the grease, pack it with new grease, and slip on the new boot and call it a day.

I found the easiest method was to remove the two strut bolts. Be sure to mark where they were to preseve camber. On a rusty car removing it any other way is nearly impossible.

I replaced the boot cause mine looked exactly like yours. It clicks now and I wish I had replaced the whole thing while I had it out.

It's just as easy/cheap to replace the whole axle then you don't have to worry about the boot etc.

Ebay has a set for $110 for both sides... just do a search.
Most autoparts stores have them as a pack too.

Agreed with what the others are saying: I just did both halfshafts in the past month and it was quite a bit easier than expected. Just remember to un-stake the axle nuts before jacking your car up. The pin keeping your axle attached to your tranny isn't that hard to remove.....I just found whatever in my garage would fit and knocked it out with a hammer. Quick and easy w/o much mess.

Tools I used:
1/2" breaker bar
32mm(i think) axle nut socket
17-19mm sockets
hammer and metal dilly...

Steps:
With car on ground:
1. Loosen axle nuts and wheel lugs.

Jack car up:
2. Take yer wheel off.
3. Remove pin where axle attaches to tranny.
4. Remove top bolt where your struts attaches and loosen the bottom one.
5. Remove axle nut, grab your disc and pull it towards you.
6. Now take your axle off.

It's much easier than you think....have fun!

My bottom strut bolt was on there pretty good, I soaked it in penetrating oil for a long time. Went to rip into it (you know where this is going, right?) and SNAP! Off goes the head of the bolt. Oh yeah, that sucks. So I'm still stuck at this point, never changed the axle, I just got fed up and put the thing back together. :lol:
I brought it to the guy that helps me out when I need it, and he saw it and just shook his head. He said the amount of time it'd take to get that thing out of there would be quite time consuming. The shitty issues with having a 12 year old car and CT winters.

Ok this is kinda wierd ... RockAuto has the half shaft assembly made NEW by a company called CarDone for 42.79 + shipping. CarDone also sells another half shaft assembly which is remanufactured for 52.79 + 60.00 core charge + shipping. Im tempted to get the new one for 42.79 ... but it seems wierd that thats how big the price difference is. Anyone use CarDone parts before? they supposedly have a lifetime warranty.

That's an easy one, use an angle grinder and cut off wheel to remove whats left of the head, and the nut and bolt will come out the other side. Replace it with a new one. Done

i put cardone axles in my subaru this spring. i got em at O'Reillys. i ended up getting one reman and one new one. idk, i guess i will find out how they last after some time.
